Located east of Quadra Island, the protected areas provide habitat for coastal wildlife, including black bears, wolves, cougars, black-tailed deer and numerous bird species.

Its forests and wetlands also help maintain healthy watersheds, support biodiversity, and store carbon.

Each year firefighters in Campbell River, B.C., smash hundreds of pumpkins, all for a good cause. CBC's Maryse Zeidler was at the event, which has become a tradition for the community.

“They’re not reintroduction fish,” he explained to Black Press Media. “They’re answering-questions fish.”

During her swims, Hardacker regularly encounters seals, herons, kingfishers and occasionally otters and sea lions. She remembers her first ocean swim, when she noticed a seal following her halfway to the reef.

“I thought, I have two choices — I can either be afraid and somehow get back to shore, but the seal is between me and the shore, or I can accept the fact that you know what? Seals swim out here and so do I,” she laughed. “And I picked the second option.”

“We encourage people who decorate for the holidays to get creative this season and find alternatives that are wildlife-friendly,” says Hailey Boehner, wild animal welfare specialist at the BC SPCA.

Once freed, the buck quickly regained its footing and ran off into the surrounding area without any apparent injuries.

With no place to take their animals, their guardian made the compassionate decision to reach out for help, BC SPCA shared in a release.
