Long time KDE user. As in "back to the 1990s" long.

A new systemd dependency bothers me.

Why? I run FreeBSD. We have no need for something that started as a service manager and became basically the entire Linux operating system.

    BSD is not Linux.

Sadly didn't fix the one bug that's driven me crazy since switching...

The start menu and krunner needs to stop launching programs before I'm done typing.

Hit start, type "kwr," hit enter. Konsole opens.

Why? Because when I typed "K," it autocompleted to Konsole. And instead of waiting to resolve the remaining characters, it just launches whatever is selected.

Really tired of accidentally opening games when I'm already playing a game

Why would it ever launch programs before a user has finished specifying? How would one ever run anything other than calculator?

Because - and I'm not defending this behavior - it launches the highlighted program as if you were navigating with arrows

Oh man that's also terrible. Or a great way to launch 15 programs just by swiping through a list.

It's just the one since the start menu/krunner disappear after launching something.

I just have to wait like 200ms but....I use AutoCAD for a living. I type commands and hit enter thousands of times a day. Really hard habit to break and frankly, I don't want to break it!

Thanks for sharing. As a Linux newb with a laptop running Fedora, I'm now curious whether I can download and use Plasma 6.7 or will it be distributed with the next Fedora update? 😊

It should be available in just a few days at most.

Do you mean as part of Fedora 44 or as an update?

Yeah, it should come with the next Fedora release, which is scheduled for October 20th.

Feature updates, like this new Plasma version, get shipped every half year on Fedora. In between, you mostly just get security and bug fixes...

While that's the case for the Workstation (GNOME), in KDE Plasma version the desktop environment is a rolling release. It shouldn't take more than a a few days, considering their previous Plasma releases.

If anyone's curious where all these new settings and changes are, there's a video by linux experiment that goes through them.

Did this bring KDE bigscreen view too?

Yeah, they revived bigscreen. It's an entirely different package though, plasma desktop and bigscreen only share kwin as the compositor and some of the core apps like dolphin, so you'll have to install them separately on your distro.

As someone who came to Linux/Plasma from macOS, the way Plasma has dealt with virtual desktops has always baffled me. So I'm glad to see that it now works much more like the way I'm used to. Bravo!

I'm kind of the opposite, I didn't even know per-monitor virtual desktops were a thing, so I was blissfully ignorant of its capabilities. But seeing it in action from clip in the announcement post, I now know what I'm missing and can't wait for it to be rolled out in my distro!

I think the new default keyboard shortcuts for switching between virtual desktop in the overview is neat too.

I used to have a Mac mini at work with two displays. I kept Thunderbird in one virtual space on the left and would switch to it as I needed. Moving to Kubuntu, it drove me mad that I had to move both desktops to get to my email.

It was extra ironic, because where macOS treats both desktops as the same in terms of the Dock and wallpaper, Plasma actually treats all desktops as spaces that require separate settings. So the panel on one screen can look completely different to another. So they're separate in a way that makes no sense to me, but not separate in a way that also makes no sense to me.

But ultimately it doesn't really matter, and I've been able to work with it just fine.

welp those sons of bitches did it. Oxygen and Air back, FINALLY virtual desktops per monitor, AND global push to talk.

I can finally now make Plasma my daily driver. this makes me happy.

This will make Microsoft confused, since it's actually improving the desktop in a new release and not making it worse.

Some thoughts for features I care, for my personal setup:

Highlights / Per-screen virtual desktops: Just in time for me. I finally added another screen and had to enable a workaround KWin Script "Virtual Desktops Only on Primary". For my use case this was already enough, but it is an awkward workaround that should have not been there. So glad this is resolved. Just need to remember to tick that off after the update and check it out. :-)

Highlights / Press-and-hold for special characters: This will have a bigger impact for me personally probably. There are lot of solutions to this available, but after my new installation (years ago now) I didn't bother to set anything up. Right now my keyboards physical layout is German, but I use an English-German hybrid layout in KDE. Its confusing enough to remember where all the special keys and access combinations are, so glad there is a much simpler way built into KDE now.

Widgets / “Background Apps” in the System Tray: I think this could be useful for certain apps that does not have a tray icon, but are able to go to background. Because otherwise I don't see any use for this. How many applications that can go to background without closing the app doesn't have a system tray? Oh is it for GNOME first designed apps maybe?

Usability / Faster virtual desktop switching in the Overview: This ability to switch desktops via shortcuts should be default on any multi desktop system. Me coming from tiling window managers is used to Meta+1 (or any other number) to switch to desktop with one hand directly to the desired desktop. I find the new pre-configured way of scrolling through with Page Down / Up a bit awkward. Not sure why they opt in to that.

Usability / “Type-ahead” on the desktop: Curious about this one. Nothing much to say, as there is no deep explanation here. Need to see it in action.

Theming / Breeze: Oh no, I do NOT enjoy rounded stuff. The new slide in for notifications on the other side looks pretty.

Theming / Union: This is a big one. But as I see its still not part of the regular desktop and needs additional "that is under heavy development" package to be installed. I'm actually happy with my current setup, so won't try it out yet. But this development is exciting for future me.

When i heard the title "Press and hold for special characters" I thought you could press and hold the "Alt" key and use the numpad to enter Unicode characters, like on Windows.

Hopefully we can get something similar soon.
