It's getting a theatrical release?! Great to hear, it has been so good!

Amazing Digital Circus? Fathom? Glitch?
Haven't heard of any of these, what am I missing lol? Is this a USian thing or am I just living under a digital rock? =P
Amazing Digital Circus is an indie animated series on Youtube. Its produced by Glitch productions. There are 8 episodes so far, with one more releasing later. The 8th and 9th episode are getting a special release in theaters. Its being done through Fathom Events, which runs "special movies" a lot. These are often reruns of older movies. Like, around here they run Ghibli movies every few months.
The whole event is kind of a big deal because Glitch is an indie Youtube based production house. That they got a theatrical release was big. Its been incredibly popular and getting a wider release, which is even bigger. Because they are not a big studio.
As for the show, its a deceptively complex series that feels vaguely like a kids show, but gets pretty deep on a lot of issues in a metaphorical sort of way, and sometimes more direct. The core plot, the main character, Poni, suddenly finds herself trapped in this virtual Digital Circus world. Its run by an AI entitiy that controls everything. There are several other people whom she meets who have already been trapped there for an unknown amount of time. No one remebers their real names and some details about their real lives. The mystery of how they are trapped there gets unraveled while they do little adventures.
Its on Youtube for free if you want to watch it.
Might be worth a watch but the final episode hasn't been released yet if I understand correctly? Any ETA on that? :)
I haven't watched it yet, but Ive heard it pitched as a modern version of "I have no mouth but I must scream," the seminal horror story by Harlan Ellison.
Having now watched it, lol, I wouldn't call it horror. It's mostly just silly.
I'd say it's more like Deca-Dence if anything, but with a lot more comedy and less plot-driven.
I don't know the story, but one of the main TADC characters is mostly mouth. He doesn't scream a lot, though.
What was I trying to say?
"I have no mouth and i must scream" but it pretends to be a kids show.
Indie adult animation series published on youtube with wild international success. It's pretty good
Adult? Really?
it's weird seeing something I know on Lemmy, where the userbase consists of 30 year-old men with facial hair and queer people with a great interest in tech.
Bruh I'm gonna drive almost an hour round trip to the next city over just to see this! I'm so pumped!
The demand has been fueled by a wave of outreach from fans who want to see the final episode with others and support the series, as well as a fear of being spoiled on what happens in the episode before its YouTube release.
I really like this show and have thought about seeing it in theaters, but I would want to talk about it and people are gonna be pissed about spoilers
guess if it's your cup of tea then cool. I remember watching the first episode a couple years ago and just found it boring and unfunny. reminded me of the whole 'homestuck' fad from the mid 2010s that seemed like only "american weebs" got.
I mean if I'm going to watch a cartoon about clowns I'll go with Bigtop Burger any day over this show.
Wasn't expecting Bigtop Burger to be called out on Lemmy. Digital Circus is definitely a different vibe than Bigtop, but it's more of a slow exestential thriller compared to the zany humor in Bigtop. Definitely not for everyone, but it's done really well in my opinion.
I'd recommend giving it another go now the series is almost complete. It's not supposed to be a comedy, and it gets pretty dark as it goes on. It takes a lot of inspiration from I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream if that still doesn't sound like your kind of show then fair enough, it's not for everyone, but don't let the first episode or the fandom put you off
I think the only Big Top Burger thing I've seen is that "WIRE" music video from a few years back.
