Good morning. ☕🦆😲

5 July 2025

Do you remember when fresh coffee came in vacuum-sealed cans that had to be opened with a can opener? Those quietly disappeared, didn’t they?

This morning, I made a mistake so embarrassing, the cultured elite would be well within their rights to scoff. I reached for what I thought was a bag of coffee beans, only to discover—gasp—it was pre-ground French roast.

Now, the French roast isn’t the issue. But pre-ground? That’s a betrayal of everything my Coffee-Snob persona stands for.

If I were to mingle among people—not that I will—I wouldn’t be able to meet a single gaze. My coffee grinder sits in silent judgment.

It is a sad morning. This misstep will set my credibility back weeks.

Adventure in life is good. Consistency in coffee even better." — Justina Chen

Twilight Drifters

"The image is a serene black-and-white silhouette of five ducks gliding across the still surface of a lake during what appears to be evening twilight. The lighting is low, casting the ducks entirely in shadow—sleek outlines against the shimmering water. Each bird is spaced with quiet grace, creating a gentle rhythm across the composition. The lake’s surface subtly mirrors their dark forms, broken only by faint ripples trailing behind them like silent whispers. There's a sense of hush, of time paused, as the soft light kisses the water but never reveals its source. The entire scene feels hushed and contemplative—evocative of closing chapters or silent companionship at the end of a long day." - Copilot

@Swede1952@universeodon.com I had the opposite problem this morning. I have beans but my seven month old coffee grinder decided that it didn’t want to grind them anymore and just make a horrendous sound instead. Luckily I have a backup manual hand cranked grinder that just keeps on going as long as you’re willing to turn it. My morning coffee-geddon avoided…

Got me thinking maybe I should just go with preground – oh the horror!

    😂🤣

@Swede1952@universeodon.com My wife hated the manual grinder because it took me 20 minutes to grind enough for a pot of coffee. She’s a tea drinker and it was just the sound of my grinding that she didn’t like.

She got me a fancy KitchenAid burr grinder that had a gentle whir sound, but now 1 bean is sufficient to jam it, resulting in a horrible grating noise.

So yes, I was happy I had my manual grinder! I also generally don’t mind the time it takes because it is my Zen moment in the morning.

A manual coffee grinder with a black top and a silver handle, attached to a clear glass jar. The jar shows some residue and is sitting on a light-colored countertop.

@Swede1952@universeodon.com Coffee still comes in vacuum sealed cans. It's just under a thick aluminum seal that is peeled off, and it still makes the satisfying whoosh when you open it!

You're right—they do, but now it's in plastic containers. They also vacuum-seal the coffee in bags. I was just reminiscing about the old aluminum coffee cans—the kind you had to open with a can opener.

@Swede1952@universeodon.com @StumpyTheMutt@social.linux.pizza I remember the cans that opened not with a can opener but with a "key" stuck on the bottom of the can.

Not with a can opener, but silly coffee still comes in those? And there is in the US another one- Bustello? I’ve been away from there too long!

Also: had the opposite problem once: went camping, bought beans instead of ground for my bialetti. That was a long morning before the shop opened to get ground coffee…

Oh yea, I've seen Café Bustelo on the shelves, haven't tried it though. I may give it a try.

In that situation, I might have tried to crush the beans by hand. 😂

@Swede1952@universeodon.com @tinebeest@mstdn.social Bustelo is my favorite brand, and lucky for me it comes in decaf!

@Swede1952@universeodon.com @StumpyTheMutt@social.linux.pizza it’s seriously strong espresso, perfect for a bialetti and espresso machine and will put hair on your chest. (The local expression here is ‘strong enough to have a horse abort its foal’ 😳)

@Swede1952@universeodon.com Keep it in the freezer once opened - it'll be sort-of OK-ish for a few days.

@Swede1952@universeodon.com That's what I'm drinking right now - we don't take a grinder on holiday with us so there's part of a packet left in the freezer.

@Swede1952@universeodon.com Ow! I feel your pain. Too often I grab the wrong bag or can, because I don't take the time to triple-check, use my label reading pocket magnifier (shit for eyes).

Either I live with the consequences or donate to a food drive 🤣

Those old metal coffee cans were handy. I used to use one as a step stool for a quick high reach. Made a nice drum out of one.

I usually order coffee bean online from Sam's Club, but the "checking the label" advice is still valid. There was a time when I would just set it aside, but I'm going to use it. How bad can it be. I just won't tell anybody. Oops. 🤣

    @matera@mastodon.sdf.org

Yeah, there’s that too. But honestly, their beans aren’t bad—there are a few decent brands to choose from. I usually go with Maker’s Mark or Starbucks. I mean, I used to be one of those coffee snobs who swore by small-batch beans from obscure roasters. But after enough taste tests, I realized the difference wasn’t earth-shattering. I can spend $25 for two pounds… or $25 for five. Sure, I brace myself for judgment from fellow caffeine purists—but let’s be honest, I’ve been that guy too. 😂
