And alcohol interacts with it and increases the risk. So, 2.5g + alcohol is enough to kill you.

Please, if you’re pregnant, do not mix alcohol and Tylenol. Choose one or the other*.

If it does kill you, it'll often be a slow, drawn out death that takes days, if not weeks to kill you. And if it doesn't kill you, it'll give you permanent liver damage. I'm honestly shocked that it's available over the counter, with how close the toxic dose is to the therapeutic dose. Scary stuff

Yeah that's 3 days worth of Tylenol at one every six hours even waking up to take one overnight. You need serious pain to justify that.

And while you might get away with 2 in one dose once or twice if you take it infrequently, the harm is cumulative so don't be trying to claim you can do that for days on end.

Yes but can you agree that the post is funny because it's insulting reddit?

Spez's mom must've severely OD'd on Tylenol when he was in her womb because he became an ultimate autism supreme commander.

Tbh I don't know to much about reddit mods and given that all the other Tylenol memes I saw where neutral to posesitiv about autism (oh noo my child will go into IT) and given we're in a place with a high amount of IT nerds (where the neural divergence rate is pretty high) I didn't really interpret the meme as calling reddit mods as autistic to insult the mods. But yes the more I think about it that interpretation probably does makes the most sense and yes I'm not a fan of that.

I'm not pregnant, but I intentionally reached for the Tylenol yesterday for a headache.

I never hesitated or thought twice about whether I should take it, and the thought that taking Tylenol would harm me didn't cross my mind.

Acetaminophen is not the problem that some people seem to want to make it out to be.

What did bother me is that the Epstein files are not public right now. Convict and man in the Epstein files, Donald Trump, should go ahead and release them.

The autism claims are unfounded BS, but Acetaminophen is problematic for your liver. Small doses are fine, but a dose the size in the post could cause severe harm or death

And too much water will cause you to dilute the electrolytes in your body so much that you can no longer command your heart to beat.

Anything is dangerous if you use it wrong enough.

Yes but it's a lot easier to OD on acetaminophen than water. If a person with severe pain is tempted to take more than 1 Tylenol every 8 hours, that would be an overdose.

For acetaminophen, there's fewer than 500 deaths per year of acute liver failure that they believe is linked to acetaminophen overdose, in the USA.

For water poisoning, the only figure I could find is "a handful of deaths" per year in the USA. Seems that they don't really track that one very closely.

Either way, we're taking about a fraction of a percentage of the population being affected each year. Last I checked the USA had about 335,000,000 people, so 500 people is around 0.000015% of the population? Or one in ~670,000 people are going to die from it.... per year.

If we're going to split hairs over what's more likely or what's statistically possible, I wouldn't bet on either of these. I'm pretty sure you have a better chance of getting hit by lightning or winning the lotto, than being offed by either, less likely if you have an ounce of intelligence to look up the safe daily dose of anything....

It's a dumb argument to make to say what's more likely. Ok, well, how about this, you're more likely to be hit and killed by a motor vehicle.

    It doesn't mean anything.

Acetaminophen is known to be liver toxic in very accessable doses.

This does not necessarily lead to death, but does lead to a significantly reduced quality of life and lifespan.

You're making a bad faith argument here, stop that bs.

The number of people in the US who die from acetaminophen overdose in a year is anywhere from 500 to 100,000 (!) depending upon which source I use. That's what I got from a quick web search. While it's odd (and suspicious) that there's that wide of a range in the claimed mortality, the fact is that is still a lot more than the number of people who die from drinking too much water, which is so rare that it makes the news whenever it happens.

Acetaminophen is not the problem that some people seem to want to make it out to be.

No, it doesn't cause autism, but there are certainly safer painkillers. That's why I'll take ibuprofen or aspirin instead, if I have a choice.

Ibuprofen is not recommended for people with hypertension and with prolonged use, leads to leads to stomach issues. And aspirin lowers platelet adhesion, so also carries risk for people with who bleed easily. Everything carries a risk, that's why studies help show what those risk are and how to minimize/avoid. That's the nuisance missing from the national discussion, kinda intentionally. The right dose is therapeutic, any more and kiss your liver/kidneys goodbye for most drugs.

Back when gaza war started, someone in the comments referred to Jews as a race. I felt like correcting them, literally copy-pasted a line from wikipedia that says they're ethnoreligious group, not a race. I was banned permamently for hate speech/bigotry.

I'm not sure I'm following your argument. Almost everything is a social construct to humans, that does not make it un-true. I feel like this is one of those anarchistic things people say just to appear smart, while in reality it's meaningless.

What race someone is literally depends on what people think. There's no scientific way to establish the race of someone. A popular example is that Italians and Irish were not considered white.

Idk how you can't follow my argument, it's clearly about the fact that it's not definitive whether Jews are a race or not. It is definitive that they are an ethnic group because you can establish that via culture and heritage and language and obviously, religion.

I think Indians and Taiwanese look very different and don't have a similar origin, but people would say they're both "Asians" by race.

Because I would consider jews a ethnic group since you can be Jewish and have no religious ties and ethnoreligious implies religious ties. So really you need to say secular jews or religious jews. Wikipedia obviously just groups it all together

Lol yes, it’s a painkiller haha. Fairly mild, too, but usually the extra-strength version is what you’ll get after surgeries and stuff.

Benadryl is the kleenex of anti-allergy meds.

Don’t take Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Shit would never be approved for use if it were invented today. It fucks with your brain, messes with your reflexes, and is correlated strongly with dementia.

Second and third generation antihistamines work better and are non-drowsy.

I used to, until I learned more about it.

One of the things that finally made me realize how potent it is: pilots aren’t allowed to fly for at least 60 hours after taking anticholinergics like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or doxylamine (another first-gen antihistamine marketed as Unisom, and is also the thing in NyQuil that makes you drowsy).

Tylenol is an extremely common and successful brand of pain relief medicine sold until very recently by Johnson & Johnson. The active ingredient is N-acetyl-para-aminophenol. This has been variously shortened to Acetaminophen, Paracetamol, or indeed Tylenol. Other medicines are sold under the Tylenol brand, such as Tylenol PM which is Acetaminophen and Dyphenhydramine (the drowsiness medication with a side effect of allergy relief that powers Benadryl and Sominex).

Here in Europe I've only ever seen it sold as paracetamol, and it tends to just be generic supermarket brand. Looking in my medicine, random keys, and elastic bands draw (everyone has one) even my allergen medication is just sold as antihistamine, with no branding.

  • The generic term used in the United States is Acetaminophen. Europeans don't know what that is, Americans don't know what Paracetamol is, they're the same thing. Generics are available but brand name Tylenol is ubiquitous here.

Tylenol is a brand that is old enough to be from a time before trademark law had been abused to death, back when a brand name meant you know who makes this. That idea is even more fundamental to American culture than freedom of speech but it got smothered in bed first.

Acetominophen, an analgesic (for pain) and antipyretic (for fever). It's not an antihistimine.

I have never used it, and never will. Far too toxic on the liver and blocking fever is a bad idea during infection.

Also don't take more than the recommended max dosage. Taking 10 grams of acetaminophen in 24 hours is enough for possible fatal liver damage. That's 20 to 30 pills, depending on dosage.

For comparison, ibuprofen has an LD50 of 636mg/kg of body weight. For 70kg bodyweight, that means consuming over 40 grams of ibuprofen (200+ regular strength pills).
