The race to replace Sen. Marsha Blackburn is intensifying just days after she won the race for governor, with one Republican congressman publicly expressing interest and speculation swirling around Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Rep. Tim Burchett, a Tennessee Republican who won reelection Tuesday, told AP he wants to be considered when Blackburn becomes governor in January.

“Absolutely. Absolutely,” Burchett said.

Hegseth has also surfaced as a potential replacement, with his future uncertain after Republicans’ sweeping midterm losses. But Hegseth is not currently being considered, according to a person familiar with the matter who discussed the private conversations on condition of anonymity.

Please let Hegseth be the GOP nominee, dude is practically radioactive for abusing troops and being a key player of the economic nightmare we find ourselves in.

  • It would be pretty hilarious if the GOP politicians think they can get away with slotting him in without any electoral consequences down the road. Yeah, it’d be somewhat utilitarian, in that he’d definitely toe the fascist party line, but that won’t matter as much in the next couple years given the shift in seats, and hoooo-leeeee fuck would there be some blowback - he’d have, I think, basically zero chance of getting reelected.

Blackburn, who is serving her second Senate term, has indicated she plans to retain the seat until she is sworn in as governor, allowing her to appoint her own replacement to serve out the remainder of her term, which ends in January 2031.

That's fucked up. There should've been a special election (which would've given the Democrats an opportunity to flip the seat, especially now that they know even deep "red" states are in play).

Aw, that's a shame. No safe harbor for this guy, then?
