They have recently opened a new airport that has cut the 5 day boat ride from Capetown South Africa to a 6 hour flight.

Based on your description of the island, it sure sounds like someone not only visited, but stayed for a while

If they built an entire airport, that must have stayed for quite a while. They might have even brought some friends to help.
