If the chicken ever didn't use a condom you'd find a mess of bloody feathers in there 😬

We know it's not fertilisation, but does anyone know why that really happens? Just a defect in the egg cell?

I know it's a meme and all, but I've heard of folks that prefer when they have a little blood in the egg to prove it's been fertilized and claim it tastes better

Unfertilized eggs can have blood in them too.

Normally they are removed before sale though a process called candeling which is easier to do with white eggs.

My flock of only hens will lay eggs with a bit of blood in it from time to time. There is no change to the flavor or texture of the eggs and it's just something that happens naturally.

I didn't really think you could candle the eggs to find a little blood. I thought you had to wait until you actually started to see development of a chick? We had always used the base to a big lava lamp to candle ours. I think I've had some with blood before but I didn't usually eat those because I was a little squeamish but my ex-wife had always told me there was older folks that seemed to think there was a difference. I don't know though. We always had couple roosters running around to too being assholes so, I guess I just assumed. I think maybe my ex-wife had told me something about roosters having to be involved for there be blood so I've never really looked it up on my own.

The egg white (protein) is the baby chick, the yolk (fat) is something the chick gets its first couple days nutrients from.
