Democrat James Talarico has won the US Senate race in Texas, breaking a 38-year drought for his party in the Republican stronghold and delivering a stunning blow to Donald Trump.

New Democrat lady governor too. Abbott spent 439million on his campaign, did 1 commercial and chilled thinking he was secure- then lost. Hahahahhaha

"But progressives can't win red states"

Democrats have been running centrists and losing in Texas for 30 long years. A progressive just won where centrists spent decades failing. And centrists are already trying to pretend that Talarico is one of theirs.

Democrats have also been running centrists and losing in Maine for 30 long years. A progressive just won there too.

Frankly, it's starting to look like it's centrists that can't win in red states because republicans prefer to vote for fascists over fash-lite, and only centrists are excited to vote for fash-lite.

I don't think it was rejecting centrists that did it. This race became symbolic of our nation, with Paxton playing the role of an amoral, corrupt, pedophile, while Talarico played the part of The People.

    A progressive

A person *who says they're a progressive. Let's see how they actually vote before we get too excited.

I know, but that's not enough.

We've had 40 years of Democrats making promises of progressive politics and then voting conservative once they're in. Most recently they gave us a great example, with the Democratic Party voting to fund the Iran War.

I need to see him actually vote for progressive causes. Words mean nothing now.

I see a lot of news about the senator and very little about the governor who also switched to Democrat. Isn't the governor supposed to be much more important? It's great that they both changed, but it seems like Talarico is getting more attention than the governor, whose name I don't even know.

Context: I'm European and this is a genuine question, not a comment.

The Governor rules the State, while a Senator is Federal. They have very different roles in government, so they can't really be compared. if anything, they have equal power, just different power.

Governors usually have term limits, usually 2 terms, so after running out their time as governor, they run for Senate, which has no term limits, so they can stay forever, provided they don't run for president, or get tapped for a Cabinet post, or something.

Really, really glad that Jasmine Crockett trying to smear him as a racist didn't work any more than Democrats and Republicans trying to smear AES as a radical jihadist didn't work.

I don't think Talarico or the new TX governor are going to do much, but it's possible they may slow down the data centers, and that alone is enough to make me happy even if they completely ignore affordability. (Which isn't an unlikely outcome.)
