I want to share a little story with you, comrades. Russia in the 1990-s…At that times Russia could be called liberal. There was almost no censorship. I am saying almost, because there is quite an interesting piece that I think any liberal democracy would censor in any country, because that is one of its basic elements – at least I think so. So here is the case: In the 60-s there was a guy named Nosov, he was a writer in USSR and he had written a series of child’s books called “Dunno”. One in particular was «Dunno on the moon”. A political satire on US capitalistic system. It explore such features as oligarchs controlling the state and mass media, exploitation of the poor and working class, low moral values of the average citizens, destruction of the nature for profits, consumerism and much more. Book was quite popular and considered a light anti-utopia. So in the 90-s, when Russia itself became capitalistic, private-owned Russian studio FAF decided to make a kid`s cartoon from such a source material. It was quite an interesting endeavor to make an anticapitalist dystopia cartoon in a country, that is trying to build that same capitalism. And, as you may guess, some elements from the original book were changed. Among those elements there was one, that is a clear example of censorship. In the book one of the main characters tried his luck becoming a businessman himself and got completely fooled by his business partners and became bankrupt. But in cartoon he succeed and become a capitalist himself. At time, it was funny to me – they has left almost everything, but deleted that part. There was even a scene of ecoprotest getting cracked by police, but when it comes to the fact, that capitalism game is rigged from the very beginning and house (in terms of capitalism – super-rich) always wins – that one they censor. Trust in the capitalist system - that anyone could become the one on top, shared by local population - was the key for them, especially in post-soviet countries during "shock therapy" economic measures. You can find cartoon on youtube with eng subtitles, by the way. Just type in search «незнайка на луне eng sub».
