The high salaries paid by technology companies, particularly in the booming A.I. sector, have driven up housing and other costs in San Francisco, making it less affordable for everyone who doesn’t work in the industry.

Workers making money doesn't make housing expensive...

Landlords charging as much as people can pay drives up housing prices.

People who bought a house 50 years ago for 50k listing their home for 1 million drives up housing prices.

Greed. Greed is why housing prices go up.

Everyone is greedy but demand is what drives up housing prices. I can be greedy and list my house for 10 million but no one’s gonna buy it and my greed won’t impact the market. Housing is cheap in rural West Virginia but no one wants to live there and there aren’t enough jobs for the few folks who do.

The demand is somewhat related to tech salaries because there are so many tech companies in SF and they want people in the office. Of course people are gonna try for jobs that offer 200-600 thousand a year in total compensation, and those folks aren’t gonna want to live 3 hours away from the office. Not that I blame tech workers. The housing crisis is ultimately a policy failure.

We also have a lot of financial incentives around home ownership, including huge tax incentives. Home ownership is much like higher education in that it’s historically been critical for attaining and maintaining an upper middle class lifestyle and now, despite skyrocketing costs, folks are under the impression that they have to get in at any cost or they will be left behind.

San Francisco is currently declining at a rate of -1.64% annually and its population has decreased by -7.15% since the most recent census, which recorded a population of 875,139 in 2020.

Demand is down, because population is done...

Prices are up, because some people can pay more.

The people who own the housing, didn't have their costs increase, except property taxes...

Which increase because housing prices go up.

They're causing the only fucking valid reason they have for increasing rent, and its a feedback loop because they keep increasing prices which increases valuations which increases taxes which increases rents.

What is hard to understand here?

What is hard to understand is why you’re taking an antagonistic tone with me for no reason.

Because you said the opposite of what was true, and you said it recklessly and with conviction so other people who don't think are likely to just believe you...

I'll never understand why so many people value feelings over facts and tone over information.

Now I'm going to block you soni never accidentally explain something to you again, feel free to do whatever you want. I'm not wasting any time explaining shit to you
