Haha, tricks on you. They'll sell your information either way.

This is what people mean when they say dark patterns. There’s now decades of research on ergonomic and intuitive interface design. For a brief time there was a general effort to make things more usable but we’ve reached the point where advertisings penetration into the internet is so deep the opposite occurs; usability is purposely hampered to trick you into consenting for things they’re aware you would otherwise never want

Pressing the back button is the correct option. Better stay away from that site.

I'm convinced all of these consent forms are just placebo anyway

Pretty sure this is explicitly forbidden by eu cookie law. But of course barely anyone enforces that stuff.

We've done it. Humanity has achieved peak possible asshole design during the perfect alignment of the planets.

We can now create the Torment Nexus.

I kinda don’t think creating the Torment Nexus sounds like the best idea.

It's fine. I read all about it in the classic novel "Never Build the Torment Nexus".

Come to think of it, I wonder if finishing the novel would help me learn how to build the Torment Nexus...? Oh, well. I'll be too busy to finish the novel, since I need to spend all my time building the Torment Nexus.

Sorry to tell you it's being sold regardless of what you do. Try out NoScript.

Know of anything similar for iOS?

Not really. The best is nextdns and using a neutral a better dns. iOS is pretty dogshit.

I've been looking at the fairphone and it seems good. I like my librem 5 but you need a stack of batteries like Pokemon cards.

Oh that's interesting... I have an iPhone 16 right now, and it has a 3561mAh battery. The Librem 5 is currently sold with a 4,500mAh battery... my battery on my iPhone is pretty decent. I just plug it in every night because I use probably just over 60% of the battery every day (just normal use). If I could swap out batteries instead of having to charge overnight, that would be cool. Even to just have a backup with me just in case.

Just leave the site if you can. Don’t reward bad sites.

I guess this is what you see, when the webpage decides "Even a random 50% of the people, is better than what we would get if people could choose what they preferred."

A very good sign, about the page's intent.

I can't even tell for sure which state that switch is in! This is a well-known UI design issue.

I have screenshotted and sent to customer service to ask every time this happens, so far they have all said sliding to no means do not sell and I agree this is remarkable asshole design. It hurts my head!

Ghostery, along with blocking trackers, has a "Never Consent" feature that declines these automatically. Since it understands the underlying platform rather than the text shown to the user, it should give the right answer (and it'll block the tracking cookies anyway).

That said, Ghostery has had some telemetry drama in the past and not everyone trusts them, so despite this being super useful, don't install it without a bit of research.

I'd just prefer uBO with Consent-o-Matic cookie blocking

Oh, I was under the impression Consent-o-Matic can only agree to cookies, rather than refuse them?

I forgot about ghostery. Looked into them. Seems they’re still selling data as a business model.

However I did find this extension and I’m wondering if it’s legit or not… not too many people using it, it seems… https://github.com/mjkuniversal/auto-reject-cookies

Nice find. It's a Claude project to at least some degree, which is a bit of a bad smell for me, but I agree that people should be cautious about Ghostery so it's good to have options.

    This ....

These "would you like us to ransack your home?" type questions irk the shit out of me. OF COURSE NOT! NOBODY WANTS THIS! WHY EVEN ASK?

Why is any of this shit legal to begin with? Did we collectively fall asleep or something? Why is it just casually accepted that companies will be able to take your data and sell it to brokers that with mixing and matching can know more about you than youndo yourself? Then add to this that Nazi Germany would gave LOVED all this data for their genetic cleansing but thank go we dont have fascism anymore so we wont have to worry about our data falling into the hands of insane murderers, at least.

    Right?

Seriously, death to data brokers, all of em

A pretty underhanded design. The text says you can choose to not have your data shared but the button clearly indicates the decision has already been made. To play it safe just flip the switch and see if anything changes. You can flip it back if it isn't what you want.
