Unfamiliar with off-brand controller compatibility with the PS5, with the system being either modded or unmodded. But maybe worth investigating of 8bitdo controllers work? There's some smaller ones in the market, like inspired in the NES and SNES controllers.

We used a Hori wired gamepad for a while. It was better than nothing, but not being wireless made it a bit of a hassle to use.
