It wasn’t the kind of call a grocery store gets every day. A customer with a thick Eastern European accent was on the phone saying he wanted to buy several thousand cans of Red Bull. Could the store have them in stock in a few days? Also, did they have equipment to move all those stacks of energy drinks into the parking lot, where two minivans would be waiting?

When the day came, Oct. 19, 2022, employees at the Smart & Final store in San Diego sold 3,960 cans of Red Bull and 720 of Monster Energy to two men and two women, all with the same accent, and helped them wheel the pallets out back. To pay for it all — the bill came to $10,747.05 — the group pulled out piles of plastic. These weren’t credit or debit cards; they looked more like hotel-room keys. There were 25 cards in all, each with a different amount loaded onto it, and the four people took turns swiping one after another. Then, the payment complete, they drove off.

In the days that followed, people as far away as New York and Florida made panicked calls to the store. They wanted to know why their food-stamp accounts (containing their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits) had been drained at this seemingly random location in San Diego.

It would turn out that what became known as the Red Bull Crew had gotten ahold of their SNAP data and used the funds to buy the energy drinks, which they then sold online or to smaller stores. It was hardly an isolated event. From September through November of that year, the same crew, part of a criminal syndicate based in Romania, bought at least $305,274.52 in energy drinks, using SNAP account information and PINs stolen from at least 174 victims nationwide, according to court documents and federal investigators.

The store didn't question anything? They seem to be also liable.

I don't care what people buy, I care that the store saw a bunch of snap cards and thought that was okay.

It sounds like they weren't even official SNAP cards -- they were obviously cloned cards -- they said they looked like "hotel keys"

Did they figure out how they stole it?

I know this upsets us all, but I am just livid reading this. All for the lack of security chips? We won't even make sure people can eat. How is this not a no brainer?

Doesn't affect him or his ilk so fuck you(edit: you as in all of us poors.) Once the money is taken from the rich via tax, they couldn't give a fuck about it. Instead they'd rather go after the lie that lots of "fraud" occurs, which allows for defunding and canceling the program, which means the right could pay even less taxes...

    It's disgusting

“There are people who have Lamborghinis who currently receive SNAP benefits.”

That seems like it'd be easy to prove, so how about you arrest them?

The vast majority of money scammed from social programs is done by companies, often connected to those politicians, and rarely facing real consequence. Look at Rick Scott of Florida, they industrialized overcharging medicare, I think he as ceo personally profited 100 million from it. Walked away as a governor, then senator. I don't think he spent a day in prison.

But the administration wants the poor to get hurt first of all out of general principle, and more importantly can use the fraud as an excuse to cut the program more later.

They need that money to bail out llm models and data centers!

I'm guessing the store was in on the scam if they thought it was normal to sell ~$11,000 worth of Red Bull spread across 25 SNAP cards.

If he knows those SNAP beneficiaries who drive expensive cars and defrauding the system, why does he not deal with those cases? Looks like he is aiding and abetting fraud, isn't it?

If you ask our leaders about it, they’ll say it’s all white. They don’t care to feed, house, heal, or help.
