British fintech Revolut confirmed that it disclosed sensitive customer information to an unauthorized third party after receiving fraudulent requests sent from a legitimate government agency email domain. The exposed data included customers’ identity and contact details, including their birth date, postal and email addresses, and phone numbers, as well as copies of their identity documents including passports and driver’s licenses, according to a notification emailed to affected customers and reviewed by TechCrunch. The data may have also included verification selfies, account statements, and transaction histories, the firm said in its notification.

Revolut is asking me to re-submit my documents to confirm my identity as they "have expired". Not sure if I should bother, considering I have another bank and stuff like this is happening. The only thing I use it for is the virtual cards but honestly I haven't been using them all that much these past months.

Does the UK government not do cryptographically signed emails?

    Yay KYC and AML laws!

I wouldn't be surprised if other neobanks as well as regular banks have been affected too, potentially without noticing.

So this is obviously terrible stuff, but for once I feel that the leaking party isn't the only one at fault here. Seems like a government agency (shocker) was breached first, and then thus breach was used to appear more legitimate in the next attack.

Why there is no process for verification of the government address. They require photos of your face, id, and who knows what else as a customer, but from a government employee, with far more privileges a single email address is enough?

Well-known crypto security researcher ZachXBT posted about Revolut’s email to its affected customers late on Friday. The researcher said the incident appeared to have been targeted at high net worth users.

Well, at least I’m safe from this one
