My parents (boomers) raised us four kids on my dad's bus conductor wages (plus a bit of underpaid babysitting money for a few years) and had paid off the mortgage on our London house, which they bought when I was a baby, before I finished my GCSEs. And had both loft and kitchen extensions done.

My mum's parents (first gen immigrants) had four houses purchased outright in the Midlands which they rented out. My grandmother was a stay at home mum. My granddad was a teacher.

I can't even afford to buy a one bed flat :(

This reminds me of a lot of tiny/beautiful house emigrant YouTubers too, except instead of parents its a remote working developer spouse

What's a tiny/beautiful house emigrant? Just someone who moved into a tiny/beautiful home? I looked it up on youtube and got a lot of generic looking tiny home videos. And a lot of videos specifically for people 55+ ; not sure if that's just the demo that's into tiny homes or if I'm being tracked better than I thought 😒

Yeah, it's my own little category that I have in my mind, not anything super formalized. But there's a bunch of immigration content that depicts some kind of hyper idealized life in another country where they're like, oh, I have this beautiful house. It's so affordable. Everything is so great. And then you start to ask yourself, well, how do they actually have a visa? What are they doing for their job? How far do they have to travel for their job? How does any of this work? And then you see that either that a spouse is doing actually just a pretty normal job, or they themselves have some unicorn job, and the whole setup is really quite a rare/specific one. I don't think that they're outright lying or anything, but they just aren't telling the whole story much like the magician
