If you don't like Debian, go fork yourself.
That was too easy. Name 10 things that cause endless flame wars on linux!
systemd
Vi/Emacs, and get off my lawn
Vim: quick and easy
Emacs: properly decent programming language in the configs, supports Vim bindings via Evil, Org-mode as the ultimate notes app
Arguably they're sort of converging with all the nvim stuff out there. I said vi to be cute but I actually use LazyVim
I use Doom Emacs, so we're both in glass houses here. I love Lua because it's fast as fuck, but it's militantly imperative, which is a big bummer. In comparison, Lisp still has a lot to teach a novice-ish programmer. Fennel is the best of both worlds, I guess.
i'm constantly switching back and forth between them as well as helix. I like them all.
GNOME vs. KDE
Pronounced "guh-nome" and "kitty"
What about xfce? That's what i run.
Which reminds me of X11 / Wayland
Well, congratulations, I guess. I don't think I've felt my blood pressure spike that hard reading the responses to a comment before. Pure ragebating!
There's two variants of Debian: Debian, and "damn, this distro is not as flexible as I'd like, I guess I should have just installed Debian in the first place".
"Don't shoot! I'm a TempleOS user!"
guards throw down their weapons and kneel
βName 3 package managersβ
Apt Rpm Pacman
Rpm is really more analogous to dpkg. Does the local work, doesn't talk to repositories.
Apt to...not yum anymore. checks Dnf.
I'm not sure which one would properly call a "package manager", the apt/dnf role or the rpm/dpkg role.
rpm/dpkg is the package format. apt/dnf/zypper is the system that downloads, unarchives, and moves files into place.
rpm and dpkg are also programs that are used for a number of local operations.
dnf yay snap flatpak emerge... nix?
The world's oldest profession.
don't shoot i'm a linux user
prove it name ten distros
idk but i use arch btw
Bazzite, Debian, Linux Mint...Arch.... Ubuntu....
That's five I could think of off top of my head.
I got 50% right, okay!
Once you get to Ubuntu, just continue down that rabbit hole of flavors. Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Bananafanafubuntu, etc...
You've got two so far.
Can you name 10 base/independent distros?
Slackware, debian, arch, suse, gentoo, Linux from scratch,...
Damn I'm old.
Yeah, I was afraid to respond similarly thinking shit, I'll start naming rare or abandoned distros if I do.
Linux dude since slackware make menu_config;make modules modules_install
I guess linux from scratch is questionable. But, these aren't abandoned tho, slackware still maintained.
is the oldest distribution that is still maintained.
I didn't even mention a single distro and I''m literally using slackware right now, so no idea why you replied like this.
Apologies misread your comment.
Understood. Only thing I could think of is that interpreted my make menu_config line as referencing linux from scratch.
Fun fact: In the 90s, everyone had to compile a kernel using menu_config or menuconfig configurator. It didn't matter if you ran red hat or slackware or debian, they all had you configure your kernel on some form back then.
We would often download the latest kernel overnight from a bbs or mirror site beforehand days before installing because you often needed the latest kernel to get your hardware working.
Anyway, no worries. I was just confused by your response.
Ubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Kubuntu, Ubuntu phone Ubuntu refrigerator, Ubuntu Oven, Ubuntu for dads, Ubuntu for your cousin, Ubuntu with spotify pre-installed, Hannah Montana Linux.
Uh, I guess he was thinking in terms of distros using .DEB packages via APT. Ubuntu, Kali, Debian, and so many alone use DEB packages.
Debian, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Arch, CachyOS, Omarchy, Void Linux, Gentoo Linux, TinyCore Linux, OpenSUSE
Fedora, red hat Linux, bazzite, secureblue, rocky Linux, alma Linux, bluefin, nobara, aurora, ultramarine
Where is this movie from?
- CachyOS
- Fedora
- Arch
- Ubuntu
- Debian
- Nobara Linux
- OpenSUSE
- Kubuntu
- Bazzite
- KDE Neon
Tails, Devuan, Mobian, Kali, Debianissimo, Armbian, Proxmox, Qubes, Raspbian and finally...Debian
