Saw this on Mastodon and had a laugh. Not sure if it's real, but it's funny.

I have never seen snow in person before, having my first winter in Finland sounds cool. I'd love to do that.

I’m in Germany and was teaching a class as a group in the course of a teaching degree (basically, every class period a different pairing from our German language pedagogy class would team up and teach the same students in a subsidized German lesson), and my partner for the early morning December class was from Vietnam, experiencing her first winter. She was an hour late because she was completely unprepared for icy sidewalks and literally couldn’t walk to class.

She finally got there after she made makeshift crampons out of crumpled tinfoil, which was both clever and very cute. Nobody held it against her, but all found it a little funny (she did, too).

Edit: basically, you just need the right gear and it’ll be fine, but you might feel differently about it from how you expect to. Some people love it, but most people from warm places don’t.

When I was in Urumqi, I was hanging out with a guy from Shenzhen. I asked if he liked snowboarding, he said yes, but he doesn't have a snowboard.

We get to the mountain, and there's some hints, on the ride over I'm talking about falling on ice, and he says he has fallen a couple times. Maybe it's translation or he just meant bad falls. He says he doesn't know how to put his boots on, so I figure maybe he's only ever used boa laces. We take the gondola to the top of the black diamond, we get our boards on. Guy says "How do I stand up".

Not only had he never snowboarded before, he had never touched snow before.

So I helped him ride to the bottom and got him practicing on the bunny slope.

Seeing snow is very nice. Living in it isn’t so much. It’s so fucking heavy and expensive.

So long as you don't have to shovel it or drive in it, it's wonderful! Living in an apartment, and relying on Helsinki public transportation was wonderful. I especially enjoyed going from sauna to snow, over and over.

Yes, winter is nice. November is not winter. November sucks. January and February tend to be colder and dryer, at least in Estonia. December is hit and miss, but tends to be cold enough by the end of it.

November hangs around near-freezing. It's cold, but not a nice cold. The proper cold feels nicer. It's constantly raining. There's mud everywhere, all of the time. It's pretty dark, you rarely see the sun.

-20C is nice. +2C is not. +2C is usually colder than -20C. Even with the same clothing. Fuck +2C
