Kathy Winter, chair of the Osceola County Democratic Party, released a statement slamming state Rep. Josh Turek’s ad declaring that he was against trans inclusion in sports and against “taxpayers paying for sex changes.”

“At a time of unprecedented hate and bigotry being directed at transgender Iowans, I cannot in good [conscience] vote for a man who is promising to make their lives worse,” said Winter, as reported by The Washington Post.

Winter also said she had already voted by the time the ad came out, but did not vote in the Senate race due to prior anti-trans statements from Turek. During a debate last month, he said he does “not believe that biological males should compete in female sports and this is something that has already been decided in Iowa,” referring to the state’s trans sports ban, passed in 2022.

“Dude could be talking about affordability, or data centers, or curbing executive power, or literally anything else,” one trans person on X responded. “But nah, go ahead, give legitimacy to the far-rights bullst boogeyman nonsense. Fking moron, stooping to their level.”

keeping worse people out of office is in your best interests.

Simply put, thats not how voters work. Voters just donʻt respond to lessor evil voting. If you want to win elections, you canʻt expect people to behave in what you personally think their best interests are. If you want to win elections, you need to activate people and give them someone they can positively vote for. Otherwise, you are strategizing to lose (see 2016, 2024, and every failed campaign that relied on this same white supremacist interpretation of what things mean to be strategic)

I think you are right, at least that is a better campaign strategy than the moderate Democratic tendency to promise not to do the crap the Republican is doing.

But that's a battle to be fought in the primaries, to choose candidates who are willing to adhere to principles, to chase an agenda and to refrain from taking lobbyist money. In the general election, it's time to vote against the guy who stands for open corruption, concentration camps and illegal wars and tariffs that hurt the working class.

This may not be how Americans vote as a collective, but you and I can choose to vote more intelligently than they do.

2024 showed us they vote largely on racism and vibes, at least seventy-seven million of them do. The Republican party banks on the notion constituents vote emotionally and can be tricked into voting against their own best interests. They have a huge propaganda machine based on this.

And when Americans get desperate enough, maybe they get civically engaged. Now we need to see if we can keep them engaged, because the moderate wing of the Democratic party will, if they behave typically, will settle down and take lobbyist money to make excuses. If they do that this time, then dictatorship in the United States will be inevitable.
