Who needs google? permalink fedilink source hideshow 6 child comments replies: [–] silence7@lemmy.world [S] 1 point 3 days ago (5 children) Um what? Self-hosting search that actually covers the internet requires way more resources than people are likely to have. There are things you can self-host, but global internet search is not one of them. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 5 child comments replies: [–] cecilkorik@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago (1 child) As I understand it, SearXNG is a decentralized and anonymized peer-to-peer network of search-engine scrapers. So you're not self-hosting the search engines, you're self-hosting a node in the network that scrapes real search engines. It's basically search-piracy, except I don't think they've managed or bothered to make it illegal yet, so, enjoy it as long as we can. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 1 child comment replies: [–] Aatube@kbin.melroy.org 2 points 3 days ago I do not believe SearXNG has any peer-to-peer components. permalink fedilink source parent [–] Billygoat@piefed.social 5 points 3 days ago (1 child) Kinda, SearXNG uses google/bing/ddg/etc to do the actual search permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 1 child comment replies: [–] h0tbeef@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago Yes, and it removes the AI, ads, and sponsored results,; then it uses its own algorithm to order the results more relevantly than google/bing/ddh/etc You can also choose from which of those search engines (there’s like over 100) it includes results permalink fedilink source parent [–] h0tbeef@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago It doesn't take many resources at all actually. I run it on an old quadcore i5 with like 8gb of RAM lol. Regardless, its still way better than google even if you use a public instance, the benefit of the private instance is just that it obfuscates your queries from 3rd parties. permalink fedilink source parent
