Reddit users are called Redditors. What are Lemmy users called? Lemmitors? Lemmings?

How well are the Lemmy fediverses growing? How many daily unique users do we have on this service? Will we overtake Reddit someday?

What differences should I get used to over here from what I was used to on Reddit? Thanks in advance.

I reccomend moving to PieFed ASAP because the Lemmy framework is maintained by what we call "Tankies" supporters of Trump, Putin, Xi, Un, etc. Authoritarians poorly disguised as communists. Lenninists, Stalinists. We call them Tankies because they side with the Tanks when the USSR quelled protests in 1956 and China in 1989.

You can find documentation of their beliefs hosted on !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works in the post Documentation of ML's Extremism

Welcome to the Fediverse, friend!

Will you Piefed people ever stop fearmongering about tankies? It is lame as hell and makes y'all look like losers.

There are lots of leftists on lemmy/the fediverse, a big reason being because they have gotten unfairly censored or harassed off other platforms.

The way you "centrist" piefed weirdos talk about lefties though is creepy and involves a massive amount of projection about a largely harmless group of people motivated by a desire for humanity to be cared for.

Also look up from your computer/phone fool, why are you focused on worrying about leftists right now? Have you seen I don't know... maybe all of the openly violent rightwing movements vying for power globally? And you want to run around like a chicken with no head panicking about "tankies"?

"Fear mongering" Tankies, despite the fact that they're literally authoritarians. The lemmy ml admins and other prominent .ml tankies have been documented to post Russian propaganda esp on the Ukraine war (Russia is the good guy, totally justified) to China genocide denialism to "NK is actually not a brutal dictatorship, it's just western lies!" To everything in between

Do you realize how painfully lame you sound right now? Do you think centrists and rightwing people don't firehose out propaganda too? Do you think centrists don't subscribe to blind groupthink that ends up being apologist to those committing genocide? They do that even when their own damn country is committing genocide....

...and yes I have met .ml idiots but I have met many many many more centrist idiots on here.

You are trying to make inside baseball almost no new users are going to care about into a big issue and you just come off like you are a loser.

To new users, there are leftist idiots here, there are centrist idiots here and there are rightwing idiots here, take care to ignore the centrist idiots who are hyperfixated on the leftist idiots as if that was the actual existential problem that needed to be addressed in 2026.

Says the one who needed to instantly go to lobbing insults and whataboutisms lmao

Btw, Tankies are a problem for adoption, on numerous occasions I have personally witnessed and others have witnessed as well that when the topic of Lemmy came up on MSSM such as Reddit the question of "Lemmy? Isn't that just a place full of Tankies" always seems to come up. There needs to be quantifiable visible pushback against Tankie and right wing authoritarianism.

So your anecdotes justify pre-emptively trying to exclude an entire category of people you lump in your head as "tankies"? How am I supposed to evaluate the entire fediverse based upon your personal feelings about the anecdotes you have had that involved the fediverse?

There has been research on almost the very thing you are talking about, and it clearly shows how the way people talk about the fediverse on reddit is extremely warped even before you bring in the deluge of bots faking human interaction. If you think that level of misinformation/disinformatiom is helped by fearmongering about tankies as soon as someone steps in the door you are a fool.

A new Mastodon user usually does not know which other servers their instance has cut ties with. A new Bluesky user often does not know which labelers their app trusts by default, or that a stranger curating a list can add their account and quietly lower their reach. When something visibly breaks (an account goes dark, replies fail to land), people often take the question to Reddit. The answers that come back vary, from accurate to confidently wrong.

Our study reads those public Reddit conversations as folk theories of federated moderation. We use “folk theories” in the same way the literature has used it since Eslami et al. [7]: everyday accounts users build from observation and shared discussion, rather than from inside knowledge of how a system works.

First, you should read the actual definition of fear mongering. Fear mongering "is the act of exploiting feelings of fear by using exaggerated rumors of impending danger, usually for personal gain." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fearmongering

Warning others with documented evidence of authoritarian propaganda is not fear mongering

justify pre-emptively trying to exclude an entire category of people you lump in your head as "tankies"? How am I supposed to evaluate the entire fediverse based upon your personal feelings about the anecdotes you have had that involved the fediverse?

Second, Tankies are defined as "authoritarian communists, especially those who support or defend acts of repression by such regimes, their allies, or deny the occurrence of the events thereof." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tankie

I don't lump together the entire Fediverse as tankie, I always explicitly say only a section of it users are and then properly warn if specific servers as well as .mls documented propaganda pushing and censorship of users who call them out on it. It is up to the user to decide what they want to do after. It's better to warn them and then encounter a tankie rather than have them encounter one without any context, they very well could and have walked away from the Fediverse because of it and then they go off to wherever and when someone asks about Lemmy/Threadiverse they incredibly likely to be the ones saying "That place is a a tankie hell hole"

Tankies are also typically the ones yelling at "libs" to "go back to reddit" whenever encountering pushback against their propaganda.

Third, your posted study has nothing to do with Tankies, just the inner working of moderation, defederations, labels etc. and how they're perceived by the average user. And again, you seem to like to use the term "fear mongering" to mean "Don't talk about them, don't tell anyone about them, just let them push their propaganda"

That is a nice little bedtime nightmare story you have there.

Congratulations you have a scary narrative and you have anecdotes to support it!
