Reddit users are called Redditors. What are Lemmy users called? Lemmitors? Lemmings?

How well are the Lemmy fediverses growing? How many daily unique users do we have on this service? Will we overtake Reddit someday?

What differences should I get used to over here from what I was used to on Reddit? Thanks in advance.

Says the one who needed to instantly go to lobbing insults and whataboutisms lmao

Btw, Tankies are a problem for adoption, on numerous occasions I have personally witnessed and others have witnessed as well that when the topic of Lemmy came up on MSSM such as Reddit the question of "Lemmy? Isn't that just a place full of Tankies" always seems to come up. There needs to be quantifiable visible pushback against Tankie and right wing authoritarianism.

Btw, Tankies are a problem for adoption, on numerous occasions I have personally witnessed and others have witnessed as well that when the topic of Lemmy came up on MSSM such as Reddit the question of “Lemmy? Isn’t that just a place full of Tankies” always seems to come up.

So your anecdotes justify pre-emptively trying to exclude an entire category of people you lump in your head as "tankies"? How am I supposed to evaluate the entire fediverse based upon your personal feelings about the anecdotes you have had that involved the fediverse?

There has been research on almost the very thing you are talking about, and it clearly shows how the way people talk about the fediverse on reddit is extremely warped even before you bring in the deluge of bots faking human interaction. If you think that level of misinformation/disinformatiom is helped by fearmongering about tankies as soon as someone steps in the door you are a fool.

A new Mastodon user usually does not know which other servers their instance has cut ties with. A new Bluesky user often does not know which labelers their app trusts by default, or that a stranger curating a list can add their account and quietly lower their reach. When something visibly breaks (an account goes dark, replies fail to land), people often take the question to Reddit. The answers that come back vary, from accurate to confidently wrong.

Our study reads those public Reddit conversations as folk theories of federated moderation. We use “folk theories” in the same way the literature has used it since Eslami et al. [7]: everyday accounts users build from observation and shared discussion, rather than from inside knowledge of how a system works.

First, you should read the actual definition of fear mongering. Fear mongering "is the act of exploiting feelings of fear by using exaggerated rumors of impending danger, usually for personal gain." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fearmongering

Warning others with documented evidence of authoritarian propaganda is not fear mongering

justify pre-emptively trying to exclude an entire category of people you lump in your head as "tankies"? How am I supposed to evaluate the entire fediverse based upon your personal feelings about the anecdotes you have had that involved the fediverse?

Second, Tankies are defined as "authoritarian communists, especially those who support or defend acts of repression by such regimes, their allies, or deny the occurrence of the events thereof." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tankie

I don't lump together the entire Fediverse as tankie, I always explicitly say only a section of it users are and then properly warn if specific servers as well as .mls documented propaganda pushing and censorship of users who call them out on it. It is up to the user to decide what they want to do after. It's better to warn them and then encounter a tankie rather than have them encounter one without any context, they very well could and have walked away from the Fediverse because of it and then they go off to wherever and when someone asks about Lemmy/Threadiverse they incredibly likely to be the ones saying "That place is a a tankie hell hole"

Tankies are also typically the ones yelling at "libs" to "go back to reddit" whenever encountering pushback against their propaganda.

Third, your posted study has nothing to do with Tankies, just the inner working of moderation, defederations, labels etc. and how they're perceived by the average user. And again, you seem to like to use the term "fear mongering" to mean "Don't talk about them, don't tell anyone about them, just let them push their propaganda"

That is a nice little bedtime nightmare story you have there.

Congratulations you have a scary narrative and you have anecdotes to support it!
