Like, it would fuck my breathing up. Can you not do that thing where you seal your nasal cavity at the back of your throat? I imagine it's like wiggling your ears or making your eardrums "rumble", you can learn it's just hard to explain to someone else how to do it. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 12 child comments replies: [–] Bubs@lemmy.zip 11 points 4 days ago (3 children) I think for a lot of people, myself included, water in the nasal cavity feels terrible no matter what. I feel it's less about preventing water from entering your throat and more about keeping water out of your nose entirely. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 3 child comments replies: [–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world -1 points 4 days ago (2 children) Eh, blowing air out after is kinda the same reflex. And decent seawater is basically netty potting yourself everytime you go under. I was in a situation to go to the beach every day for a year straight, and it was the best my allergies have ever been because at least once a day I was flushing it out with warm seawater. Keep in mind, the alternative here is wearing nose plugs during prolonged physical activity. Restricting breathing during physical exertion is going to rub a lot more people the wrong way. So I'm surprised people would deal with that, over the chance of some water going up their nose. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] fitjazz@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 days ago You don’t wear them the entire time you are on the river. You put them on just before a big rapids then take them off after the rapid while you paddle to the next one. I have had water forced past my nose plugs going over in a rapid before, that is how forceful it can be. permalink fedilink source parent [–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 3 points 4 days ago Do you like a sinus headache? Because I don't. Same reason you'll only see me use a nasal rinse when I'm seriously stuffed up. permalink fedilink source parent [–] Tac0caT@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago I actually really struggle with that, and hate the feeling of water up my nose hence the plugs. Some white water kayakers I know don’t bother, but most do because if you’re play boating or running something class 3 plus the torrent of water is being forced up your nose and that sucks. If I’m just swimming I can manage with out nose plugs but it took me a couple of years in my late teens to get used to not holding my nose. And even still if I’m jumping from something higher than the edge of a pool/low diving board I physically hold my nose permalink fedilink source parent [–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 4 points 4 days ago Water gets in my sinuses and causes a major headache.
