I tend to map out complex patterns in a spreadsheet so that I can highlight the row I'm working on. The color coding helps make it more readable at a glance than the tiny stitch icons in the printed pattern.

This pattern is only 8 stitches but I'll be repeating it over 80 stitches so I doubled the essential part just to help with readability.

As is my tradition I'll be starting with the cuff and hoping that I'll figure out the body by the time I'm done with those cuffs.

I love how crisp the twisted stitches look.

I use Stitch Fiddle to do something similar, especially for colour coding complex cable charts or marking where to add beads, then export to PDF so I can load it into KnitCompanion for tracking. It makes life so much easier.
