Wanted to make a hat in school colors, but couldn’t find a variegated yarn I liked. So like a crazy person I got some undyed yarn and acid dye, and dyed my own. This was my first time dyeing yarn, and I’m hooked.

I did take about 5g of yarn off the skein first to test different dye strengths for the purple to get it the shade I wanted before dyeing the whole skein. I used zip ties to create white spaces, then added yellow in those resist spots while the yarn was still wet.

I tried doing a yarn with a yellow main color and purple speckles, but for some reason I forgot color theory and put the purple on top of the yellow. Whoops! So I used some yarn from that skein to make the pom pom.

Pattern: Classic ribbed hat

Edit: I can’t spell Friday

Pattern: Baby Honey Blanket

Yarn: Patons Canadiana in Fools Gold

Off the needles, but not done yet. I still need to weave in the ends and embroider on some bees before it goes off to its home.

I tend to map out complex patterns in a spreadsheet so that I can highlight the row I'm working on. The color coding helps make it more readable at a glance than the tiny stitch icons in the printed pattern.

This pattern is only 8 stitches but I'll be repeating it over 80 stitches so I doubled the essential part just to help with readability.

As is my tradition I'll be starting with the cuff and hoping that I'll figure out the body by the time I'm done with those cuffs.

[WIP weekend] (midwest.social)

Getting close to having the sleeves done on my cardigan. That would just leave the button band. But I have to set it aside for now so I can get going on some Christmas gifts.

I’ve almost finished a pumpkin to keep using up scraps, this time in bulky weight yarn. I didn’t have enough yarn for a 60st pumpkin like the pattern, so I frogged and went down to 48 sts. I just need to add a stick for the stem and then some loops to make the pumpkin’s bumps.

Pattern: Bring it on, pumpkin! Yarn: Knit Picks Swish bulky in squirrel

I saw a scarf pattern advertised on Facebook. I didn't save it. But it haunted me. It was an I-Cord based hexagon scarf with loads of drape. It folds on itself to create a warm looking scarf when wrapped around the neck but when it dangles free it's open space geometry.

I drew out a rough pattern, made it, froged, tweaked the pattern and knitted again.

This yarn doesn't have the right drape for it but I proved I have a working pattern. Time to pick the right yarn and try again.

FO Friday: bunny lovey (midwest.social)

Just in time for my co-workers baby shower this weekend, I finished this bunny lovey.

Yarn: Knit Picks Swish Bulky in squirrel Pattern: Bunny Blanket Buddy

I also finished hair scrunchie #13 for the year. I’ve been using my yarn scraps to make them, they take only 10g or so for each one.

Yarn: This one was some Cascade 220 in sunflower Pattern: Soho Scrunchie

The first one was eaten by moths, and on the second, I realized that I had done every single wrong side decrease backwards after 221 rows.

This picture was taken when I finished chart 3/6, which puts it at 300/554 rows complete. This is easily the most complex lace pattern I've ever done. There are 18 total pages of charts (each one spans three pages), the ring lace background is garter, with no rest (knit/purl only) rows, and every single row is different.

Edit: Just realized I forgot to link the pattern.

1 fingerless glove :) (media.piefed.social)
submitted 3 weeks ago by to c/knitting@lemmy.world

(Left image is outside of glove, right image is it flipped inside out).

I know it's only 1 glove but this was my first project beyond a standard knit (which I now know is "garter" stitch) scarf with fringe.

I learned Right Side (RS), Wrong Side (WS), how to do a purl stitch and that alternating it with knit is called stockinette, and this was my first attempt at doing a "mattress" seam! Which you can see I struggled with, especially for the stockinette part, but I'm hoping I can do a better job on the next one, and I'm happy with how this lil glove came out overall for a first attempt! :)

If anyone does have tips/suggestions, or "tried and true" resources for learning how to do seams, I'd be grateful!

I used the pattern, yarn, and needles included with this kit: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1441750462/diy-fingerless-gloves-knitting-kit

Any other knitters make your own cable needles? I was using one that was just a touch oversized for these 00 sizes needles. I rifled through my electricians box and found some 14 gauge copper wire and shaped and sanded it to create a cable needle that I could use differently from each direction depending on the need.

I'm probably going to flip the direction of the dip on the shorter side but it's already working better than the one I was using.

WIP, sock cuff. (lemmy.world)

I'll be doing two at a time on this pair so it's time to start the second sock. Hopefully before I finish I will know what I'm going to do with the rest of the sock beyond the cuff. What will the body pattern be? The heal type? The tow type? No idea. One phase at a time.

Bliss Teddy Bear (lemmy.world)
submitted 1 month ago by to c/knitting@lemmy.world

The person who gave me the yarn informed me it was silk and superwash Merino wool. Expression Fiber Arts, polar bear. This used less than 37 grams of the 114 so in theory there are two more bears in that skein.

I have made this bear at least 6 times in different sizes. This time I started thinking about what it might take to rewrite the pattern to knit more of it in the round and dramatically decrease the amount of seaming and weaving that is needed.

WIP cardigan update (midwest.social)

Slowly progressing with my cardigan. Pretty proud of my progress considering it’s a very busy time at work for me, which leaves me drained in the evenings.

I bound off the body tonight. Sleeves are next, which I like to do two at a time. Then the button bands (and finally choosing some buttons) and it’ll be finished! I’m debating what buttons would look best with this color. Wood? Black? Painted with flowers or birds or something? I’ll have to decide soon, and I’m open to ideas.

Tasslehoff Bliss (lemmy.world)
submitted 1 month ago by to c/knitting@lemmy.world

I just finished a pair of socks but that project won't be truly done until I do some extra steps to make them truly unique.

I want to knit another pair of socks but on October 1st Inktober starts and I'll be spending between 1 and 4 hours a day drawing each day. But I still need a knitting project I can pick up and put down. Something I have made before.

I ended up with this fingering yarn that would make horrible socks but was too nice to leave my mind.

I have made the Debby Bliss Teddy Bear project at least 6 times. This time it will be a polar bear.

Tasslehoff is fine with me knitting as long as the yarn ball isn't directly in front of her. Then she has to hunt it.

Size 1.75 mm needles. Unknown yarn.

Two previous versions of this pattern I made into Cthulhu.
