Sometimes, in sitcoms, a friend or relative who doesn't live in the home just enters and announces themselves after opening the presumably unlocked door.

[Shudders]

This is how my grandparents house was growing up. They were my neighbors so it was like having 2 houses.

Anyway family would just pop in whenever. The older I get the more I reflect on how nice it was. The closeness and connection as opposed to this isolation.

We were meant to have these large extended families that we lived together with. Multi-generational households or even compounds were the norm for practically all of human history.

Sometimes I think about what we've lost. I guess I don't have to wear pants

I like the idea of a compound or a village for a multi-generational family home. Seems like a nice blend of closeness and respecting boundaries. I'm not saying that wasn't the case in your situation. I'm sure you had a method of respecting their privacy, too.

It really was an open door policy. Only time I had to knock was at night after 8 or so because they would lock up. I guess other family would call at nighttime, but daytime was open

    Simple times

My friends do this. It's nice because I can have friends over while also never answering when someone knocks or rings the doorbell.

My guess is it’s just to save time so they don’t have to waste time going to the door and opening it for everyone who arrives.

One of my other concerns is that an unescorted visitor might get eaten by a corgi.

  • TIM: That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered canine you ever set eyes on!

ROBIN: You tit! I soiled my armor I was so scared!

TIM: Look, that Corgi's got a vicious streak a mile wide! It's a killer!

    GALAHAD: Get stuffed!

TIM: He'll do you up a treat, mate.

    GALAHAD: Oh, yeah?

    ROBIN: You mangy Scots git!

    TIM: I'm warning you!

ROBIN: What's he do, nibble your bum?

TIM: He's got huge, sharp-- eh-- he can leap about-- look at the bones!
