My local library just decided to stop buying new CDs and to get rid of their whole collection, same for DVDs.. I said that this is probably the worst time to do it lol.

It's also utterly moronic: they're a library, they're supposed to be holding onto physical copies of whatever they offer to their users. Without that, libraries themselves will soon be considered... pointless and a waste of public money. Which may be the plan?

    Sad times we live in.

Yeah, this is what I have been thinking and what I have tried to tell them. Music (and movies) are culture and people should be able to access culture without paying or having to watch ads.. The streaming services are not an answer since they keep rising their prices and limiting what they offer, filling their lists with non-human creations for profits.

    Exactly.

They're committed to render themselves useless: if people, aka citizens, do indeed need to pay a sub for accessing media they won't own (like stuff borrowed from the public library) why should they then be expected to also pay taxes in order to subsidies those public libraries, as well as the librarian's salaries? What will be their purpose in that model?

I'm really surprised the employees are not working hard against such a shift, it's quite obvious this won't end up well for them.

From what I have been told when talking to them, they just see the music and movies as a waste of money and space.. But yeah, full agree.

In a world so obsessed with reducing costs, as public servants, they should really be a lot more careful when pointing out at anything as 'a waste of money'. Really.

Feel free to share with them that comment from a random French dude, that probably has no clue at all what he is talking about, you chatted with online on that odd reddit-like forum ;)
