Chinese propaganda is rampant on the fediverse. We need to discuss ways to combat this. One group- memes or something is wholly controlled by Chinese state actors. What do you think?

You can safely assume that anything on .ml or lemmygrad is. Just don't subscribe to them. I can give you a block list that encompasses most of the ones who don't stay nicely in .ml land. We should have shareable block lists like BlueSky to get new users up and running quickly. I hope that PieFed eventually does some stuff like this.

You can export your settings, remove everything unrelated to blocks, and share it. Then other users can import the json file and it will be added to their existing blocklist.

Good hint, but there needs to be an online registry of them where you can subscribe to them and get updates automatically when they change. This is how Bluesky works and it works very well.

Defederations and bans essentially work like a shared blocklist for all users on that instance. Plus you get a local feed with other users who have similar interests, and blocked users/instances don't use local server resources.

Subscribing to a blocklist seems risky, because it's likely that many users would subscribe to a single, popular blocklist. Then it would become a centralised point of control which can silence people across much of the Lemmyverse.

The difference is that I don't get banned/censored on western instances for criticizing Trump or US military interventions.

Well sure you can criticize Trump there. But try criticizing the CCCP, China, or Russia.

Insistent propaganda talking points and trolling are tolerated if they are from the Russian or China/CCP perspective. Honestly that's about all there is on their news or politics discussions.

You can criticize them as long as you aren't doing so from a liberal, anti-communist perspective. The genuine flaws of existing socialism are better analyzed by those that actually study socialism and socialist countries.

You were temp-banned, for dogmatically repeating debunked claims pushed by liberals, in the face of evidence to the contrary. You appear to be free to comment there.

Didnt know it was temp. Thank you

One was more despite the evidence of clear worker rights violations that was argued was fine because the state is "the workers". The second I got called to provide evidence (which sure no probs there) but then silenced lmao. Super frustrating.

What you called "clear worker rights violations," was just the fact that unions are required to be a part of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, and aren't allowed to be independent from that federation. This isn't a violation of worker rights, though, as the only purpose rogue unions would serve is undermining the socialist system, and would be vulnerable to foreign backing (such as from the US Empire).

The socialist state is already run by the working classes, I recommend Roland Boer's Socialism in Power: On the Theory and History of Socialist Governance to get a better idea of how and why socialist countries hold the structures they do. Roland Boer also has a good book called Socialism with Chinese Characteristics: A Guide for Foreigners, which is more specifically about the PRC and goes beyond the structures of governance to the more broad system of socialism in China.

Regarding your participation in MeanwhileOnGrad, you should know that EmoPunker cut off the final replies, where they called defenders of Pol Pot "genuine socialists." These are the kinds of posts on that comm, they selectively remove context that makes themselves look worse, deliberately misframe reasonable comments, and the comm itself is run by a zionist. This kind of anti-communist bar is a gathering spot for genuine fascists, but it seems you're fine with participating there.

I'm curious if you have any good video essays, I really enjoy learning while doing things, which is much more difficult with reading, though I have started Socialism With Chinese Characteristics and it is interesting!

Not nearly as in-depth due to time limits (and mostly focused on the Xi Jinping era) but Red Pen's A Summary of Xi Jinping's Governance of China can be a good primer! There's also This is how China's economic model works: Explaining Socialism with Chinese Characteristics by Geopolitical Economy Report.

Really, in order to understand the PRC, you at least need to understand Mao, the Gang of Four, Deng Xiaoping, and Xi Jinping. There were other leaders, but these have perhaps had the largest impact on the PRC of today. Xi Jinping Thought upholds Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory, while believing the Gang of Four to have been left-deviationists and the Cultural Revolution to have contained more excess than was worth.

Also, the Prolewiki page for Socialism with Chinese Characteristics: A Guide for Foreigners is pretty poorly formatted, and extremely lengthy, so I recommend either going to the anna's archive link and downloading the source directly, or reading these:

Fair point those workers trying to organize against unfair labor practices would undermine the state. The state was surely handling super well already actually. /s

Thank you for the reads though i will check those out even if we disagree on this so fat

Rogue unions aren't simply "workers trying to organize against unfair labor practices," though, which is my point. There are already unions, and the state already punishes bad actors. There's extremely minimal grassroots opposition to the socialist system in China, so recognizing this context is important.

And no problem, let me know if you have any questions!

mod Removed Comment There are lots of countries, including all the western countries where fewer people answered affirmatively to that question, where people are far more free to express their opinions than in China, though. The most obvious reason being that the majority of the world's countries do not have a Great Firewall. This is what shows that there is a bias in the Chinese answers -- or possibly a bias the other way in the western ones, but either way it means the results are not meaningfully comparable. edit: > What's happening is that working class speech is relatively free, while capitalist and corporate speech is not. That's why the vast majority say they have freedom of speech, while we know the state censors private, capitalist speech. "I don't want to work the 996 work week" is the epitome of working class speech, whereas supporting it is corporate speech. China chose to censor it. by turdas @suppo.fi reason: misinformation

I've been pretty happy here on lemmy.zip. We haven't defederated from the tankie instances so you still see their content sometimes, but you can always filter them yourself. Same with the zionists on lemmy.world.

    Where truth isn’t censored

Self-hosting seems your only option then. You might be cut off from other instances if they decide to defederate, but at least on your instance you'll be able to enjoy free speech (and block unwanted speech).

If you're concerned about privacy, you should probably know that a lot in the fediverse is very open by design so that other instances can communicate effectively.

That's why everyone can see what you upvote/downvote, even if Lemmy itself doesn't show this to you in its UI.

Yes Lemmy.ml is the most popular of the tankie instances. They will ban you, remove your posts, etc in most major communities if you say anything negative about CCCP, Russia, Communism, etc.

I can recommend lemmus.org as a very fast and efficient instance. Remember, you don't have to have an account on the instance who's communities you want to access. You can access communities on all instances from any instance. So the policies of your home instance don't really affect you much. They only affect the communities hosted there.

I can 2nd lemmus.org, it's pretty chill over here. The admin has blocked the creation of new communities for the time being however, so if you want to start a new comm you're better off looking elsewhere.
