Paraguayans on Friday rallied in front of Congress calling for the imprisonment of right-wing president, Santiago Peña. Peña announced his resignation amid opposition calls to initiate impeachment proceedings over his alleged responsibility for the closure of Ueno Bank, one of the South American nation’s most important financial institutions. Peña has been embroiled in serious allegations after his government transferred millions of dollars to Ueno Bank (nearly $850 million in public funds, including money from the Social Security system), an institution that announced its closure this week, despite having boasted for years of financial stability and growth in depositors, according to Manuel Gustale, former president of Ueno. Hundreds upon hundreds of depositors at the bank in question have taken to the streets and demanded the return of their money, which was not possible due to the government’s freezing of the accounts. The decision to freeze the accounts comes on top of several allegations of possible links between President Peña and the business group that controls Ueno Bank, which has raised suspicions of conflicts of interest involving Peña and Central Bank President Carlos Carvallo.

“Now you have a demand for class politics… It’s going to be hard for them to put that genie totally back in the bottle.” @btnewsroom editor-in-chief Ben Becker explains the Democrats’ “blue tsunami” midterms victory comes as anti-billionaire anger had gone mainstream — opening the door for more radical voices to force party leadership to be accountable to the voters who elected them. “Now they have to speak to how they’re actually going to go after the billionaire class.”

“The fact that he has been convicted of rape is something that makes him more credible to the far right.” On Novara Live, Dalia Gebrial argues that the fact that Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and sexual assault won’t alienate his far-right fanbase because these men are “not invested in the humanity of women”, but instead view “women as their property”. “It is about securing their exclusive right to be sexually violent towards women... It’s only bad when a foreigner does it.” Watch the full episode on our YouTube channel.

“Being Jewish and being a Zionist are two different things.” Zack Polanski was furious when responding to a motion tabled by the Tories in the London Assembly that “strongly condemns” the motion passed at Green party conference declaring that Zionism is racism. The Green leader and London Assembly member explained the historical basis by which Zionism can be said to be a colonial project, and asked how it can be that those calling out a genocide can be decried as racist, but those committing the genocide literally get away with murder.

"There is no China threat to Okinawa and Japan." Okinawan scholar and peace activist Keiko Yonaha says Japan's militarization has accelerated rapidly since the Takaichi administration took office. And Okinawa is being transformed into a military stronghold. Yonaha argues that the "China threat" narrative driving that buildup has no basis in reality, and that it is amplified by right-wing internet users and pro-government media. "We wonder how long the Japanese and US governments will continue to lie and deceive the people of Okinawa," she states. She warns that younger Okinawans, while anxious about being sacrificed again, may not grasp the true nature of the conflict — and calls on international media to amplify voices from the island.

The biggest loser of election night wasn't Donald Trump, it was the data center industry. Dozens of data center moratoriums and restrictions passed. Just one lost. Six governors who supported data center moratoriums won big. And at least 47 winning Congressional candidates made data centers a core part of their campaign, with 17 flipping from red to blue. What next for the Democrats after the “bluenami” in the US midterm elections? On Novara Live, political commentator Krystal Ball argues that progressives Democrats could build a super-coalition and fuel a “political revolution” by comparing the wealth of billionaires with the material conditions of ordinary people. The first step is casting the narrative as “class welfare against billionaire oligarchs,” she says, adding that the Democrats must now start delivering on that promise.

“We should not be carried away with a sense of pure euphoria.” Each time the Democrats win control of Congress, we get a raft of promises — student debt relief, universal health care, climate legislation — with none delivered. BT’s Ben Becker warns that while satisfaction at watching Republicans lose is warranted, irrational hope in what Democrats will achieve risks repeating the cycle and leading to the return of Trumpism – or something even worse.

The Bronx mobilized to demand accountability for Javits Frimpong, the 15-year-old Ghanaian teen fatally shot on way to school last Thursday. Frimpong’s father said that he believes his son’s shooting was tied to bullying, and investigators are searching for three teenage boys in connection to the shooting. Speakers at the rally slammed the continual funding of ICE while critical programs like Medicaid were under threat. Bronx community activists instead demanded more funding for schools and afterschool programs, along with resources put toward health care and ending homelessness to tackle the crisis of gun violence.

“This is exactly what Israel wanted.” Donald Trump is not ending US aid to Israel; he’s doing the opposite. On Novara Live, journalist and US foreign policy expert Eli Clifton explains that Israel knows the policy of sending the country billions of dollars each year is politically toxic and gives the US leverage. So instead, lobbyists have been pushing to replace the aid package with Section 219, a provision that mandates the US to co-develop weapons systems with Israel. This will interweave the US military-industrial complex even more deeply with Israeli interests, making it harder than ever for US leaders to end support, Clifton says.

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to beat you twice.” Abdul El-Sayed took aim at the Israel lobby and other special interests in his victory speech – after making history as the first Muslim to become a US senator. The progressive insurgent fought a campaign funded by small donations from tens of thousands of donors, while the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac) spent tens of millions of dollars trying to defeat him. “We are coming for your system of politics,” El-Sayed said.

"You don’t have to be a genius, really, to work out what’s going on here.” On Wednesday, the last possible legal challenge on British soil of Palestine Action’s proscription began at the supreme court. Dozens of protesters were arrested for holding signs quoting the author Sarah Helm, wife of the prime minister’s national security advisor Jonathan Powell. That’s despite the fact that the Met police chose not to take action against Helm, exposing a glaring double standard. Novara Media’s Harriet Williamson reports from London.
