What makes you think they obey robots.txt?

Yeah, if robots.txt was all it took to foil them, I wouldn't think you'd see the same proliferation of Anubis-protection that has come about of late.

The other option aside from Anubis-style protection is stuff that tries to poison the data that scrapers get. Stuff like Nepenthes.

I have been using Pinboard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinboard_(website)), which is paid, though it's down today (the host is not even found in DNS), which is why I went looking for any posts on the general subject. On the privacy front, I have not investigated how secure their private bookmarks really are.

I have heard of Raindrop (https://raindrop.io/), which has free and paid versions. On the self-hosted side I have heard of Linkwarden (https://github.com/linkwarden/linkwarden).

But Pinboard is the only one I've used, since Delicious went under long ago.

[Note: This is my first PieFed comment, so I may be doing it wrong.]

    Honest question

How much of that data was TikTok formerly collecting without user approval?

I vaguely recall articles 2-3 years ago about using Wireshark to scan TikTok telemetry and the data volume while ostensibly doing nothing was insane

"This report explores how young people in the UK are using AI companions and shows how deeply these tools are beginning to embed themselves in their daily lives. While this technology holds the potential to deliver meaningful benefits, it also presents significant risks to wellbeing.Early research suggests that AI companions can offer a low-cost, accessible form of emotional support that may help alleviate loneliness. Their always-on, non-judgemental, and positive presence can provide comfort to users who might otherwise lack support. However, other studies warn that these systems can foster emotional dependency and addiction, distort young people’s understanding of healthy relationships, and in some cases have been linked to self-harm and suicide.Against this backdrop, this report offers timely new insights into how young people in the UK are using AI companions. It also sets out a range of policy measures designed to help unlock the potential benefits of these technologies while safeguarding vulnerable users from their most serious harms."autonomy.work/portfolio/me-mys

And this is (one reason) whyGrok, another genAI tool that scrapes from the Internet to exist, is making child actresses nude at user request. theguardian.com/technology/202Girls are already taking their own lives because of the abusive acts of boys and men using AI to fake images of them. nea.org/nea-today/all-news-artJust don't risk it. Also if they personally didn't tell you it was OK or they're too young to appreciate what a lifetime of their child image being public means - Just. Don't. instagram.com/p/DTA9XrtFGZh/?i

5/Trying to prevent spying is only part of it. We should also try to deal with (potential) manipulation and other negative-sum behavior. Having open-weight models implemented as open-source software is part of it — but, we also need open-data — the data the models were trained off of needs to be available, too.#AI #ArtificialIntelligence #LargeLanguageModels #LLM #Privacy

4/So, how can you mitigate some of the harmful ways that LLMs could be used, as it relates to PRIVACY —I don't think it is reasonable to expect people to stop using LLMs.I think a key part of a way that this can be addressed is — LLM should to be run LOCALLY.People after better off running LLMs LOCALLY on their own computers — to remove some of the vectors by which they could be spied on.In addition to that —...#AI #ArtificialIntelligence #LargeLanguageModels #LLM #Privacy

3/I think people who care about PRIVACY should pay a lot of attention to LLMs!The ability to (both intentionally and unintentionally) spy on, manipulate, and engage in other negative-sum behavior against people will be at a level never seen before — because of how those who want to do those things will use LLMs.But, there is something we can do about it —...#AI #ArtificialIntelligence #LargeLanguageModels #LLM #Privacy

2/I don't think LLMs are going to go away — not in the way I suspect some of its hater wish it would.Even after the AI hype-bubble pops — I think LLMs will still be around. It doesn't matter if you hate them, or hate how they were created, or hate their social impact, or whatever — I think people will continue to use LLMs — both now and in the future. But, here is the thing —...#AI #ArtificialIntelligence #LargeLanguageModels #LLM #Privacy
