Democrats plan on introducing bills aimed at shielding consumers from rising electricity costs tied to data centers, requiring independent testing of advanced AI systems and clarifying when AI companies can be held liable for harm caused by their products, they said.

This is a self post - trying substack out. Let me know your thoughts, good, bad, "don't quit your day job"

I believe it is political, just op-ed vs. news, sorry if I'm in the wrong spot.

Is Elon Musk buying the midterms?

Do "the markets" actually hate democracy?

And what the hell was Vivek Ramaswamy thinking with that ad?

We're in the midterm home-stretch. Let's unpack the week's biggest questions on today's Coffee Klatch.

The Rooster, also known as the Ohio reporter that got arrested for sending a picture of Shrek's dick to a Republican politician has broken a new story:

Vivek Ramaswamy made an attack ad featuring Dr. Amy Acton's estranged mom calling Acton a liar. Amy Acton's mom's husband was arrested for raping 12-year old Amy Acton. Acton's mom stayed with the abuser till his death.

🚨Vivek Ramaswamy hits disgusting new low with ‘October Surprise’ on Dr. Acton It’s one of the most loathsome acts of political hatchery that I have ever seen, and I cover Ohio politics for a living.

Last week, The Rooster reported rumblings that notorious conman Vivek Ramaswamy had co-opted Dr. Amy Acton’s estranged mother for an endorsement video.

The Rooster exclusively reported the full 60-second video on Monday night, which you can watch above.

The ad features Donna Arthur, who we’ve known since at least 2020 as willing to throw her daughter under the proverbial bus for the enjoyment of right-wing freaks.

But before that, we learned what led to the estrangement in the first place: Her mother marrying a pedophile who molested her daughter, and then siding with that pedophile in court.

From The Youngstown Vindicator in August 2019:

The guy had accusations of molestation events in his past, she said. With his abuse of Amy, there was finally enough evidence that officials were called in and criminal charges were filed.

She hasn’t seen or heard from her mom since a day in court after that long-ago arrest.

“In the courthouse after they were charged, I went to give her a kiss, and she just turned her cheek away. That was the last time I ever saw her.”

Out on bond, mom and her husband skipped town and have not been heard from since.

At this point, there’s no evidence that Arthur even lives in Ohio.

Last night, I emailed my old friend Ramaswamy to find out whether he bribed Acton’s mom or whether that crone was hating for the love of the game.

Ramaswamy did not return my email while aboard his $10 million private jet while returning from a day trip to West Palm Beach, Florida, for reasons only known to him.

Ramaswamy and Rose Bowl champion Tim Chitters go back to a sweltering parking lot outside a famous chicken shack in Columbus, Ohio. In the meantime, I’ll be blunt: If I wanted to prove that Dr. Acton had been lying about spending some of her childhood living in a tent, I would not have summoned her mother, who, at this point in time, certainly looks like a woman who had her daughter living in a tent during her childhood.

This ad is beneath the gutter, even for the notorious sewer that is Ohio politics. But it shows Ramaswamy knows he’s losing, and that the millions of dollars he’s invested in his political career will be for naught if he implodes against a Democrat that Republicans thought would be little more than a speed bump en route to his coronation.

Ramaswamy has shown his soul with this negative ad, and none of it is good. I predict it will backfire for anyone who’s not estranged from their children, which, admittedly, is already a decidedly Republican voting bloc in American politics.

The Rooster will have more as this story develops.

Modern-day replications of one of history's most disturbing social psychology experiments, the Milgram study, reveal what makes ordinary people obey an immoral order – and how to resist.

"One of the main factors that distinguishes rescuers from genocide perpetrators is the presence of role models in their early childhood," [Emilie Caspar, a professor in experimental psychology at Ghent University in Belgium] says, based on her team's research. "So, for instance, rescuers are more likely to have witnessed their parents or other relatives helping other human beings."

Refusing to demonise a group of people, and cultivating a belief in shared humanity, may help fight persecution in those early stages, she says.

Donald Trump recently teased the idea that Russell Vought has a special October surprise and that he’ll go down as one of the most important people in history. In MaxNotes we investigate this claim and uncover a disturbing plan that has been hiding in plain sight and might explain what the administration has planned.

According to a new filing posted by Chris Geidner at Law Dork, the Alliance Defending Freedom has filed an emergency request with the Supreme Court to begin targeting transgender athletes in blue states. The filing, which centers on a cisgender female wrestler in Washington, uses Title IX and “parental rights” to claim that transgender athletes should be barred from competing against her. It also asks the Court to treat the filing as a petition for certiorari before judgment and hear the whole case this term, which could have expansive effects on transgender participation in sports, even in blue states
