Finally StreetComplete has been approved on the App Store and everyone has now the possibility to download it: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6808344816

F-Droid download link: https://f-droid.org/packages/de.westnordost.streetcomplete/

PlayStore download link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.westnordost.streetcomplete

I highly suggest you this app in order to contribute to OpenStreetMap without background or any technical knowledge. Just open the app and answer to simple questions:

  • Does this crossing have an island?
  • Is this place still there?
  • What can be left here for recycling? Furthermore by completing more and more quests the app will reward you with links to (FOSS) maps for different purposes: wheelmap, indoor, graphhopper, touchmapper.

I truly believe that this is the solution and way to get as many contributors as possible to improve the map, and make us less dependent on BigTech.

In case you want to see the site, here it is: https://streetcomplete.app/

You can now write and read open reviews on any website, with our new browser extension for Firefox and Chrome or other Chromium browsers. No integration by the site needed.

Open a place on OpenStreetMap or Google Maps, or a book page with an ISBN, and the extension finds the subject for you. On other pages you review the website itself.

Chrome: chromewebstore.google.com/detail/hkanidbmblekgfbgmgjkchjekgilbpdp

One of the interesting articles from the weeklyOSM newsletters

Fork a MapLibre style, recolor it in Maputnik, export the JSON, and host it yourself. Includes authentication setup and answers to common styling problems.

Personally, I like to micromap. I've mapped individual trees, poles, benches, and trashcans, for example. I also like to map forested/scrub areas. Buildings themselves are also kind of fun to map, so long as I have the building plugin installed to JOSM.

I don't necessarily mean something like native StreetComplete. I'm talking about apps like Vespucci and maybe SCEE.

I like both Vespucci and SCEE, although I do feel like Vespucci is a bit clunky to actually use. It's fine for quick edits, but for anything super involved, it begins to struggle. Is there something else like it that still offers the full experience?

(I know the editors page exists. I'm asking for your personal go-to, though!)

I thought this was a neat idea and might help give some people that extra push they need to update the map.

This pull request was merged a couple weeks ago that subtly renders street lamps as "a simple dot with halo". Stable versions of Carto seem to be released roughly twice a year, and this one just missed the latest cutoff (v6.1.0 was released three weeks ago). Still, if you don't typically add street lamps because they don't show up on e.g. Carto, now's a good time so they show up on the next release.

For those unfamiliar with the name, Carto is the default rendering style you see at openstreetmap.org.

I have been waiting on this for ages! I am so excited!

My state votes by mail (or ballot boxes). Every election, the county sends a voter's pamphlet with candidates and ballot box locations. I decided to map all of them, and was happy to see that a little more than half were already there. For these, most were missing at least some of the information, so I added to those.

Using satellite imagery, you can easily see most of them, so it makes it pretty easy to map them all.

On the nodes themselves, I included the following tags:

amenity=polling_station
drive_through=[yes/no] # most are, but some are not
last_checked=[current_date]
location=[outdoor/indoor]
name=[x County Ballot Drop Box]
opening_hours=24/7 # almost all are 24/7, except for some indoor boxes
polling_station=ballot_box

There were a few indoor boxes that I need to go survey in person. Once I get those, all except for one will be on the map in my county. The final remaining one is indoors on a military base, so I will be unable to survey for obvious reasons.

I do wonder if there's a better way to set the hours, since they're closed for most of the year except during elections. Because of special elections and primaries, I cannot just say that they're open from October to November. If anyone knows of a better way, please let me know! Additionally, I wonder if it's better to name them using the location name from the voter's pamphlet, rather than a generic county drop box name.

I encourage everyone to add their local ballot boxes before your next election, wherever you are!

Found this on a OSM forum, might be Sweden only. By user Alexey_Guskov

Hi all,

I print and sell 3D city maps, and while doing my own neighbourhood I realised how thin OSM’s building data is in Sweden. Almost no roof shapes, hardly any building:part, no towers or spires. The churches in Gamla Stan are single blocks with a slightly taller one next to them for the spire :)

I tried JOSM and a few others but ended up writing my own editor, to make it easy to split a building into parts, add tower segments with min_height, set roof shapes, and double check the 3D result before uploading.

Nothing is traced from external data. Esri World Imagery and Lantmäteriet’s Laserdata Skog (CC0) are shown as reference layers, over the map and over the 3D preview, which is how I check that a roof or a height is actually right.

(Lantmäteriet’s building data is still on hold for OSM pending permission, so it’s not used.)

So far I got a bit carried away and mapped every building in Hammarby Sjöstad and a few places in Gamla Stan. It is also kinda my first time contributing to OSM. I hope I didn’t mess things up too much, but I’m trying my best. Let me know if I can improve somewhere.

The editor is here, and I’ll be happy if anyone finds it useful: https://buildings.sillygoose.se/#way/1551309876

'warlok' is a browser-based tool for analyzing OpenStreetMap data in a chosen area.

From Mastodon: https://mastodon.social/@rphyrin/117116092923077801

In Southeast Asian politics, there's this concept called the mandala political model.

Wikipedia defines it as "a pattern of political organization characterized by overlapping spheres of influence rather than fixed territorial boundaries."

I named this tool "warlok", an abbreviation of the Indonesian phrase "warga lokal", which literally means "local citizen".

In Indonesia, we confer the honorary title "si paling warlok" (the ultimate local citizen) on someone who knows everything about a particular neighborhood.
