I'm not sure of the kindest way to put this. Anyone can do what Aaron did. Each moment is a choice. Externalizing that kind of heroism is disempowering. The main thing stopping people is a brutally enforced lack of hope. That is exactly what eventually stopped him. His legacy has been built on, the work is nowhere near complete, and there is so much room for each and every one of us to continue making impactful contributions. He made reddit, we're on lemmy, who knows what's next? It's only with time that these actions seem larger than life. In the moment, to follow your morality is all that's necessary to keep moving towards a better world.

People like him are only given support and trust once in an eternity.
There are plenty of people with similar potential, the problem is we crush, reject, obliterate and kill them all 99% of the time before we can witness their gift.
the world has moved further and further away from his dreams.
Not here it hasn't!
Also open access science publishing has exploded in the years since his death.
It is so radicalizing to me that AI companies are socially and economically doing way worse than Aaron and facing zero repercussions for it.
The contrasting stories of Aaron Swartz and Spez is the perfect example of how US society punishes those that do the right things and rewards malicious actors.
As much as many of us want and share that dream, he was so exceptionally gifted, and had such strong moral values, and the balls to stand for what’s right, that it seems as though that combo is almost impossible to replicate. People like him only come once in eternity.
He was on the right side of history. The best kind of activist.
He would've only been 39 this year..
A person worth celebrating and emulating. It is incredibly unfortunate that since his death, the world has moved further and further away from his dreams.
Aaron would've ditched Reddit and been here chilling with us, his People
Use their weapon to defeat them. Fair's fair.
The point to using AI is sending a message - using the big tech's own tools to compete against them at the lightning pace the tech world moves.
No one here has decompiled a game to mod it and is just left staring at a fuckton of uncommented code. It may not be finding a needle but it is sorting the hay back into bales by hand.
None of you acknowledge that these tasks would take years of work that AI is able to cut down to days. They arent blindly letting AI do everything. You dont seem to get how much time reverse engineering and decompiling takes and sound pretty entitled to others people's labor. Unless you plan on paying them for month to years to build these from scratch or you are gonna do it yourself, maybe check yourself.
This was possible before so-called AI and is possible after, without it
I thought about how this could happen recently, though without AI.
I was thinking it would probably be doable in a "federation style" format like in Star Trek.
A non-profit is built, asks projects to join the federation, they get benefits of using infrastructure, talents within the federation, or financial support. As a large federation of projects, we meet and discuss the path forward and what we need to focus on.
anyone can join as long as you meet the federation criteria. first criteria I'd like to be is limiting the use of AI to vulnerability scans, testing, and research.
I think keeping it as close to ST lore would benefit the group as well as ensure that everything remains fossy.
Who's Drew DeVault?
While I applaud replacing SaaS with open standards and taking away power from the big tech companies this seems almost a parody:
Method is clean room. ... open standards ... No leaked code ... AI help with build
doesn't appear to be any of these things if AI is being used... 🤔
AI copy is so trashy
Love it.
Should have unionized, but hey. Onward.
Drew DeVault
Sorry but I cannot in good conscious touch this project with a ten meter pole.
Some folks on the mailing list told us that they never use binary packages
Absolutely wild. They must live in a completely different reality than I do.
great to see this, anyone know how it compares to Go Map! for the same purpose?
The problem is with "fact checking" that all lessons are correct and working as expected.
Right now, of all the lessons/courses generated and available, do you vouch for the accuracy of ALL of them? Do you guarantee that, if someone who knew about the subject matter (like, physics) double checked every available question and answer in that field, they'd reply "Yes, this is all correct"? If the answer is no to either, do you know how many questions and answers are misleading or plain wrong?
voxl was built for things like software factories that use headless VMs and sandboxes (CI, computer-use agents), usually on Xvfb with no GPU. It streams them to a plain browser tab over one WebSocket and has APIs for agents.
How is it different from RustDesk? RustDesk is an open-source alternative to TeamViewer and AnyDesk, for reaching your own computers or helping someone with theirs: you install its app on both ends, desktop or phone, and the two find each other through an ID server, then connect directly or through a relay. For that it's the better fit, and it also shares Wayland desktops (experimentally) and Android phones, which voxl doesn't. voxl is for desktops on servers, VMs and sandboxes: it's one process that serves its own page, so there's nothing to install on the viewing side and no ID or relay server to run. The stream goes wherever a URL does, can be embedded in another page and comes with the APIs agents use. RustDesk has a web client too, but it still goes through the ID and relay servers, and the self-hosted one comes with RustDesk Server Pro.
Fair question. AnyModelBot didn't launch from zero. It's built by the team behind Modelflare, an AI API gateway with 200,000+ registered developers. On launch day we announced it to that whole user base and featured it in Modelflare's project showcase. That audience is exactly who AnyModelBot is for: developers who already use multiple AI models every day. So a big early spike in stars, and especially in downloads, was expected. Download numbers are the metric we watch most, and you can track the releases on GitHub. If you try it and find a bug or want a feature, please open an issue at https://github.com/modelflare-ai/AnyModelBot/issues and we'll prioritize it.
