Yeah, I agree... not trying to plan dinner off a fuzzy photo lol just wondering if it was worth trying to climb up and get a closer view... it's about 12' up the tree
Yeah, I know it's not diagnostic, was more asking if it was worh crawling up for a closer look.
The photo isn’t diagnostic on its own, but the top fruit certainly has Pleurotus vibes. The gills, stem, and ridge look right.
Can’t really tell what’s up with that bottom one.
If you wind up taking down a sample, give us a cap view, a look at the underside and stem, and a wider view of the tree for reliable ID. Quick reference here if you want examples: https://www.inaturalist.org/posts/57217-elementary-guide-for-mushroom-photography
There was formerly a pretty active mycology community on the mander.xyz lemmy instance, but no one’s rebuilt it since mander unexpectedly went down a while back. (If anyone wants to collab on a replacement instance or comm group, hmu).
Probably not, but picture isnt super for ID. Better pictures and spore prints might help.
It measures the hole, not the whole
It is tho, the size probably refers to each individual hole not the whole formation. https://www.flickr.com/photos/candiedwomanire/sets/72057594071034836/with/6585081769/
Tafoni are commonly defined as small (less than 1 cm) to large (greater than 1 meter) cavity features
So if the cavity isn't under 1cm, isn't over 1m, and isn't anywhere in between, it's not a tafone. That's handy to know.
Whatever hatched from that is now wandering that forest.
RUN!

The Lynx

Damn that’s a hot bird.
That place is otherworldly.
I'm an eternal fan of raptors. I tried to catch one at a known nest just yesterday, but didn't get a good pic. ☹️
