I'm not a jazz aficionado by any means but this is a 10/10 record for me. So good.#music #jazz

Classic LPs for vinyl returnees No.38Freddie Hubbard. Red ClayIn the early 1970s, Creed Taylor's CTI records redefined what jazz sounded like & inspired a new audience to buy jazz records. One of the landmark LPs CTI released, this Freddie Hubbard album combines great jazz playing with an accessible & soul-inspired groove. Red Clay defined the CTI sound & remains a fabulous set of performances. If you're not sure about jazz, its the perfect place to start.#VinylCoreCollection #music #jazz

Classic LPs for vinyl returnees No.37Nina Simone. I Put a Spell on YouThis lush & fully orchestrated selection of great songs from Nina Simone is from the period of her greatest success. Its a great showcase for her formidable talent. While not the hardest/toughest of her LPs, its a classic of jazz-soul fusion & a great listen including the classic version of Felling Good. Her voice & her piano playing are so distinctive, you'll be wanting more!#VinylCoreCollection #music #soul #jazz

Cover: Nina Simon, I Put a Spell on You, with a photo taking up a quarter of the cover of Simone on stage (closeup of shoulder & head) which the rest is black with the album name picked out in yellow

Classic LPs for vinyl returnees No.23Herbie Hancock. Empyrean IslesBefore Herbie Hancock became the guru of jazz fusion, he was (and continued to be) one of jazz's most compelling pianists. Empyrean Isles is from a series of great LPs on Blue Note & features the often sampled classic Cantaloupe Island. Emblematic of post-bop 60's jazz this great album is a real treat, with the added bonus of some excellent trumpet work from Freddie Hubbard.#vinylCoreCollection #music #jazz

Classic LPs for vinyl returnees No.15Dave Brubeck. Time OutAfter Miles' Kind of Blue, this is the other key jazz LP anyone should really have in their collection. Including the absolute classic Take Five (as well as Blue Rondo a la Turk), this demonstrates a very different sort of cool to the Miles LP, but remains a wonderful record to listen to. Playing around with rhythm structures in a often sparsely recorded sound, Brubeck & his band sound timeless!#VinylCoreCollection #music #jazz

Classic LPs for vinyl returnees No.1Miles Davis. Kind of BlueThis revolutionary LP by Miles Davis moved modal jazz into the mainstream & remains the biggest selling jazz LP ever. It combines innovation with accessibility & is the root of much subsequent jazz development. But most of all its a great listen even now nearly 70 years later. Like all the LPs in this new series, it transcends its genre & belongs on everyone's record shelf.#VinylCoreCollection #jazz #music

Music from the 1970s that remains timeless, no.67Wayne Henderson. Keep on Keeping onWayne Henderson's jazz fusion classic remans a Prof DJ jazz night favourite. Drawing from his long career in The Crusaders this track melds some great jazz paying with a brilliant jazz-soul shuffle backing the simple chanted message (you gotta keep on keeping on). Jazz pursuits hate this sort of stuff, but for many Henderson & the Crusaders were how they (we) discovered jazz.#70sMusicForToday #Music #jazz

Music from the 1970s that remains timeless, no.66Van Morrison. MoondanceThis Van Morrison classic is (yet another) example of 70s music genre mash-up. Bringing a jazz sensibility to Morrison's richly melodic sound (developed while lead singer of Them in the 60s) this track has all the feeling of a jazz club while remaining firmly routed in Morrison's great pop songwriting, with a great arrangement of piano, flute & horns offering a foil for his voice. Lovely!#70sMusicForToday #music #jazz

Music from the 1970s that remains timeless, no.62Salena Jones. Light My FireThis obscure cover of the Doors Light My Fire by Salena Jones is an exercise in cool jazz. A seemingly unlikely combination of cover & form actually delivers a great bit of latinesque shuffle, with some great orchestral arranging & while the makes for something that at times sounding like something from a 70s TV special, it still has a great musicality & hipness to it. Lovely.#70sMusicForToday #music #jazz

Music from the 1970s that remains timeless, no.60David Newman (feat. Roy Ayers). Fire WeaverThis great bit of R&B inflected jazz from David Newman is underpinned by a Marvin Gaye derived bass line & riffs on the soul jazz of the previous decade. Against a funky danceable backing the soloists take it in turns (as always) to get funky. This genre crossing typical of the 1970s for jazz this also involved an expansion of its audience, now sadly mostly lost.#70sMusicForToday #music #jazz

Against a funky danceable backing the soloists take it in turns (as always) to get funky. Music from the 1970s that remains timeless, no.58Kool & the Gang. Jungle JazzAnother jazz/soul fusion but this time crossing genres from the soul direction; Kool & the Gang, whose main output was funk (and latterly disco), looked towards jazz for this brilliant bit of jazz-inflected funk. Marrying a funky rhythm & some great jazz soloing (and some chanting), this again stresses how fluid genres were in the 70s (an emerging theme of this series).#70sMusicforToday #jazz #funk #music

Music from the 1970s that remains timeless, no.56Grover Washington. HydraAnother dimension of the genre-bending music of the 1970s, was the openness of jazz to funk sensibilities. Here's Grover Washington, an early mover on that fusion, and a great bit of modal jazz, cross-pollinated with funk, to produce a long jazzy mid-tempo track with a range of colours (from strings and horns to percussive shifts) that is just brilliant (and a ProfDJ fave on jazz nights).#70smusicForToday #jazz #music

Music from the 1970s that remans timeless, no.38Bob James. Westchester LadyIn the 1970s jazz fusion expanded the audience for jazz, and this classic by Bob James was a key example of a track that soul DJs could play in sets. Its brilliant piano hook & bass line were subsequently sampled a lot in hip hop, establishing James as bridge between genres. Its a lush but funky groove that like the best fusion doesn't lose sight of it jazz sensibility.#70sMusicForToday #music #jazz #JazzFunk

Music from the 1970s that remans timeless, no.34Denise Williams. Free (LP/full version)This lovely lilting ballad from Denise Williams has a touch of jazziness in its soul. From the slow (non-rhythmic) start, through to the wonderfully catchy low-tempo funky & infectious arrangement this is a stone cold classic. Its a real swayer, with some great orchestration punctuating Williams lovely vocals. #70sMusicForToday #music #soul #jazz
