Episode 40: Masks in the Round
We return to the exact moment we left off with our Schemers Table some few weeks ago, I believe. Here at the Hallowed Round, pitched battle commences as the assassination of Wicander Halovar is still in process even though Wicander Halovar is no longer in this dimension at all.
I'm going to give us a recap of the previous episode, but I'm actually going to do a little fun thing here and do it in-world based on a roll. Liam, as Halandil Fang, would you give me an Insight check, if you'd be so kind?
Halandil Fang, standing to your feet woozily from unconsciousness, as Hollis Kinnywater (the halfling warlock and servant of Tsul'rekshi, who unbeknownst to you had her throat cut out, cut open and her tongue pulled out and severed by Tyranny less than an hour ago). Hollis Kinnywater heals you very slightly, turns around, and takes the man you've been desperately trying to save and banishes him to the Pit of demonkind and then drops to all fours, going perfectly still which (without him needing to cast a spell at all) begins to render him invisible as Hollis (in any lack of motion) turns invisible.
With a 12 Insight getting to your feet, you are immediately next to Godard Halovar (whose massive half-celestial fist just pummeled you with a single blow into unconsciousness) who is now being directly questioned by Harondus Einfasen (who was right next to him) who is also pointing at Murray and the assassins to put them under arrest. On a 12 Insight, everything is blurry and swirling around you, but several things become clear to you:
- You are the only person who saw Hollis Kinnywater.
- You are the only person that saw that he did something to Wicander Halovar (and Wicander and Tyranny are both gone).
160 feet up this way, Azune (no longer in the box) is all the way up here (having rushed forward into the audience) holding Wicander to reunite him with Tyranny, rushing down into this place. Murray, you have leapt into the box here. You can hear (Hal) noise happening over on this side. You also look around you and it all starts to come back. You were doing the play. Effie Parvinas, Jekara Vodik, and Agztash Splitknuckle and his Candescent Creed nurse are all here in their boxes. Tsul'rekshi sent them invitations that were magical. They've all come. This was your night to try to make inroads into the Revolutionary Council and then all this happened. "Death to the Sundered Houses, death to tyrants" as the assassins did their bloody work. The Lady Iris Halovar (a mere 15 feet away from you) prostrate on the table next to one lone guard of House Halovar is still unconscious but stable on that table. You cast a Suggestion on one of the assassins and it worked and it gave them enough time for Wick to get away.
Harondus has tried to arrest the assassins but also, Murray has leapt into the box. She has cast Haste on Azune. Azune was hurling spells at a masked figure who disappeared from sight for reasons that are unclear. But more than any of this, the assassins are both still up. One of them is bloodied. One of them is injured but not bloodied. There's light. Did Wick grow wings for a second? You know they're trying to kill him here. There was some kind of magic at work.
The three Revolutionary Council members are here watching chaos. Everyone else in the theater is watching the show. You see people watching what (but for an incredible amount of arcane effort) would've just been the ruinous end of The Hallowed Round. Wicander Halovar being assassinated with those assassins calling out, "Death to the Sundered Houses" in this place. But there's confusion around. People are shouting. You hear people nearby going, "He's trying to help!" Are they talking about you? They are.
No one knew that a spell got cast, but they saw you tell one of the assassins to restrain the other one (and he seemed to listen) until Godard Halovar punched you in the head. People don't know what that means. You realize that what has happened here is obvious chaos that the Hallowed Round does not need, but it's not telling the story that Yanessa Halovar wanted it to tell.
What is happening in this box in front of 10,000 residents of Dol-Makjar, is a play with a very confusing first act that the ending has not yet been written to. You got the whole city watching. I think on that 12 Insight, the last thing you see (in addition to some that watched you take a hit from Godard Halovar calling out that you hadn't attacked anyone or done anything, even though that's a small number of people because that was not flashy). There's a lot of spell energy flying around. What is flashy is your friend, Captain Azune Nayar (who, with Chromatic Orbs flying and with the professor's Haste spell) is crackling with electricity, sprinting up the steps and looks for all the city like an avenging sorcerous angel who has just publicly saved Wicander Halovar in front of the entire city.
Who knows what this play is? You didn't choose to write it. But people remember plays by their ending. Maybe we can save it.
We return to initiative. Ending that round, Murray Mag'Nesson, you are up at the bottom of that round. As everyone watches Lioran Halovar (the little brother of Wicander) throw that healing spell as his brother apparently grows wings (but it's impossible to tell because there's also demonic mist and vapor all around them from Tyranny's Banishment followed immediately by Wicander's that all scans as one magical act).

Episode 38: A Heavy Crown
Folks, we return to the Seekers Table and to the world of Aramán. Our Seekers have headfed north into Timmony, where they find themselves at Brauwla's Tavern in the rainy village of Sloak, some for the second time in their adventures here in Aramán (in this world).
Having headed north after the events of the Convergence (after the events that brought all of these various adventurers back to Dol-Makjar) you headed north with a mind towards vengeance against the House of Tachonis. Knowing their plans of the raising of the white banners, and a dire need to make your way to the Golden Orchard. Not only to return the soul gem of one Alba Davinos, but also to make your meeting with Mara the Wing and the mysterious Professor (an ally of hers in The Cloak, an organization dedicated to watever Thjazi's plan was in establishing that bridge between the lost afterlives of the Shapers and a mortal world beset with an ever-burgeoning underworld).
Many things compel you forward. However, your sights narrowed as you adventured, for indeed (though it caused some conflict amongst your party) heroic acts were engaged in of a more dire and urgent nature. The causing of an avalanche on the King's Highway to Timmony that delayed House Tachonis by several days of rubble to clear; the perilous rescue of the fairies of Hawthorn's Glade from Creed fanatics and fairy poachers hunting them. Those fairies were returned to the Tintazi Wood and the new fairy cave in Dol-Makjar (where you had a very eventful, dream-filled night before you headed off in this new configuration of heroes).
Taking your time there, you also found Ulbid Morn, and were abe to tell him about his daughters. Something else that was not something that all of you felt evently was the right thing to do. Telling Ulbid about his daughters, he took him and the Black Rabbits that you had sent to his doorstep, and he said he would do anything to rescue them. Ulbid also helped you keep safe the fair folk that you had brought to the Tintazi Wood in Dol-Makjar (along the Miller's Road) allowing you travel along the outskirts of the mortal realm.
Heading north on (unfortunately a very low roll, having the Hawthorn's tree destroyed) the only tree that you remembered being close enough on the Miller's Road was the one in Sloak. So even though you made for the border of Timmony, you actually went quite a bit farther into it after rescuing those fairies. There were many moments of conversation and connection in that night while Thimble helped Ulbid protect that new fairy glade. Conversations around training, around Vaelus' loss of her oath. A insight and vision in to the theater within Bolaire's mind where Pierce (rogue lux of the Candescent Creed) was being kept by the magic of Bolaire's mask. We also connected on the Miller's Road over the newfound term of Cura Sligh (a fairy champion, which Sallow the Hag had imparted to, or at least used to describe Thimble) as Occtis explained the meaning of the word to her. As Julien could only gaze down at the shadowy figure, still in the shape of his own body on the Miller's Road, but knowing what it secretly contains.
You arrived at Brauwla's in Sloak (in the rain and gloom) deep dark night to discover light and fireworks as the new Archmage of Timmony, Demodus Blix, put on a show for the king and the weary villagers of Sloak, who haven't had entertainment like this in lord knows how long.
You also came face to face with Dame Morgaine and the rescued Hound of the King (Groveland) who last Kattigan and Thimble saw had been turned to stone as part of the villainous Tachonis plot of the Sepulchral Lords (and everything you had learned from the late Talcydimir Pridesire, who had explained part of their villainous plan). The underworld, the Sea of Lachris, the Fora Crucialma, the Halls of Mercy. All these strange arcane things that have probably faded into memory now after some pitched combat on the road. But we must remember the plans of House Tachonis and why they turned these brave knights to stone.
Arriving at the tavern, greeted by the Hounds, you watched King Augustus Valian bellowing with laughter (one arm around the bewildered new baroness of Sloak, Winifred Cosgrove, who you first met chasing after a horse spooked by Wulferic). King Gus laughing his ass off as Demodus turned (seeing his old school chum) and saying to everybody what you will hear in the moment as we return to this exact time in our game,
"Lords and ladies, my friend and yours, Lord Occtis Tachonis!"
A pin could drop in the room as this is said. Does anyone here make a movement of any kind as you are suddenly beheld?

Episode 37: Death to Tyrants
We return. Nobody even had a joke. That's how intense it is. Welcome to tonight's episode of Critical Role. Tense in here.
Last we left our schemers in Dol-Makjar, the events of the opening of KoTher'ai had spiraled out in many different directions:*
- the hallowing of the Hallowed Round
- the restuing of Mara the Wing
- the turning of House Einfasen successfully against House Tachonis
which left our Schemers with a couple of big puzzles to solve. Of course, our brand new Schemers with the puzzle of the internal politics of the Candescent Creed and the House of Halovar (including Ksha'aravi, the Shadow of Suffering, but also the politics of Dol-Makjar itself (the Penteveral, the Revolutionary Guard, The Archanade (now with Bolaire gone; fallen into the clutches of House Cormoray), and a motion of 'No-Confidence' suggested by one Yanessa Halovar)).
You met Effie Parvinas (one of the Revolutionary Council members and) discovered that she was busy checking the laws of the 'Compact of the Revolution'. And you fomented a plan to deliver invitations that the three local Dol-Makjar council members of the Grey Tower of the Revolutionary Council would come to this Weaver's Day performance of 'KoTher'ai,' and they did come. Agztash Splitknuckle, Major Jekara Vodik, and Effie Parvinas are all in attendance.
You also realized that forces of evil in the city have been working while you have been working. For indeed, you've been very busy (350 'Magpies' stroll the shadows of the city funded by the outlaw king himself (Augustus Valian of Timmony)). You installed a former student (Demodus Blix) as his archmage. You successfully created a new type of Rungjani celestial, the Kaedra. Big, big victoriesa, but your villains have not been idle.
A ring left at the crime scene of Occtis Tachonis discovered to have been planted there. An axe (the favor of the Lady Ingrid Einfasen) now being carried by the very single Captain Azune Nayar (which seems to bother both the Halovars and the Einfasens (who both believe you're their man)). The tightrope grows ever more taut for our beloved captain.
We watched the fallout of Professor Mag'Nesson both being singled out by Harondus Einfasen as a liability (but more to the point) Effie Parvenus made contact with Dean Kora Keplenvaisreck (who put you on two weeks forced sabbatical after saying "You don't do politics, I do."). That coming to a head after Murray saw that Professor Theodoro had been dismissed from the Penteveral (students taking matters into their own hands after the expulsion of one Hero D'vyen, who seems reslolute as ever). While the grand scheme of politics plays out, mother and daughter become ever more separated as Elodie wishes for cooler heads to prevail and Hero hears the drumbeat of revolution.
We also had Wicander Halovar perform his first sermon at the Cathedral of Light. And last. Gaining the wrath of the Photarch (Yanessa Halovar) who had only vitriol and hatred for Halandil Fang (who Wicander posited as her brother in a speech which also made reference to the strength of lions and to smashed mugs, references that would have been completely lost on the folk here just hearing poetry in Wicander's language but were perfectly taken and understood by the Photarch).
Spending the day healing in the cathedral (rolling a nat 20 on a Performance check to be the perfect Prince of Light) Wicander Halovar went for an evening at the theater so that he could get up on stage and disavow Halandil Fang in public and ruin a performance of the theater. If the assassins would let you do it.
And Tyranny, of course, confronted by Ksha'aravi (her father) telling her to destroy her mortal form and return to The Pit at once or she would know endless torture. Dismay, heartbreak, but perhaps a little bit of comfort or encouragement from Tsul'rekshi asking,
"When someone asks you to destroy yourself, what have they just told you they do not have the power to do? Never obey in advance."
We return to "KoTher'ai" as the play unfolds and we have entered into pitched action as light cascades over the box seat of the Chamber of Lords-Advisory currently attended by (not the entirety of House Halovar, but Wick's nuclear family minus Zebani). Your father your mother and your brother are all here in attendance as two assassins step forward in to the light saying,
"Death to the Sundered Houses, death to tyrants."
We are going to return to this moment. Before I ask us to roll initiative, I want to set the stage for expectations for this encounter. Which is that Wicander Halovar is in an extraordinary amount of danger, and the dice are really going to tell a story here. My goal, as always, as your dungeon master, is I'm always rooting for you guys. And part of rooting for you means being honest that your odds here are not superb. The ability to make clever choices is deeply significant. The dice will tell the story they want to tell and I have trust and faith in all of you that you will tell an amazing story no matter what happens. I want to give you guys as many swings at the piñata as I reasonably can. But, ultimately, the dice will tell their story here.
So, that being said, I have a couple questions about position within the Hallowed Round. As a reminder, within the Hallowed Round, Hal (there's an important magical effect here that impacts you and you alone in this combat, which is that you have a chance to not burn spell slots in The Hallowed Round, as we discussed last time). For everybody here, The Hallowed Round allows everybody to understand Rungjani. It gives people advantage on History and Performance checks and bards and druids can roll a D4 when they cast a spell, and if the number on the die is the spell level or higher, you don't burn that spell slot. So Hal has the ability to potentially (depending on how many rounds combat goes, he'll keep some spell slots around). The theater is a magical item.
The first thing I want us to do is a minor moment at the end of last episode (because again, tremendous danger is here). I cannot say enough, for everyone at home to please settle into our expectations of what tonight may bring. But it's still up to the dice. So, Hal (I want to give the best opportunity to our players as I possibly can given the things I can't really change about the circumstances). So I'd like you to roll an insight check for me. This will be one thing that we are not necessarily re-litigating, but we're appending to the events of the last episode. I'd like you to roll a DC 15 Insight check for me.

Episode 36: Spectacle
We return to the city of Dol-Makjar where the Schemers took flight after the opening night of "KoTher'ai," dealing with the fallout (not only of that incredible debut opening of the play but also the debut opening of the resurrected Yanessa Halovar and her motion of no confidence on the Revolutionary Council). After the three big missions of that fateful evening (the rescue of Mara the Wing from Obrimus Manor) Wick and Tyranny along with Bolaire making their way to the meeting of the Sundered Houses to see the Schemers' efforts of driving a wedge between House Einfasen and House Tachonis pay their dividends. Also, finding your way to the Mercanaud Couturier (saving Kattigan Vale) telling your sisters that actually, Kattigan was dead and that the Mercanauds had killed each other fighting over that magic mask. Let's hope it sticks.
Of course, also, then the opening night, the creation of the Kaedra and the creation of a new (not only tree of the Miller's Road but a new) fairy glade, the most powerful one we have yet seen by the shores of Lake Nahami in the Tintazi Wood. The appearance of a dragon, if you can believe that.
In our previous adventure, all of you came together:
- Wick dealing with the horror of the life that he took at Obrimus Manor
- Hal dealing with the fallout of meeting Yanessa Halovar in his breakfast nook that morning
- She had basically said, "It would be trivial to kill you, but I have to kill your story before I kill your person."
- Azune having his new driver as captain of the Arcane Marshalls.
Murray discovered her arcane thesis attuned to the Kibbenimkedaz (the book of the names of stones) saw the gems that the Tachonis had used in their attempted ritual to turn your pal Occtis (your former student) into the Deval Vindicta. You saw that there is a magical frequency that permeates all of Aramán based in Ilumi's Blanket and the actions of the Shapers and saw that this harmonizing impact on these magical gems could cast magic over long distances (a gift that was once common in Aramán but no longer since the death of the Shapers). You saw some way that the Tachonis had worked past that and that secret was unlocked for you in that moment as well (the beginnings of that secret).
You all got together, talked about what the hell you're supposed to do now. You guys shared a lot of secrets and compared a lot of notes about your individual knowledge of the Revolutionary Council.
Six members of the Council traveling from afar:
- those named from Ezir and the beastfolk from the Pact of Imlay
- the small folk, down to the general of Kahad and the Barrowdell himself
- the member who sits on behalf of the rebel houses of old Obridimia (the Sundered HOuses)
- as well as the final member of that Council (who I'm looking up right now to say in the recap) oh, Kavros.
Then of course, you got your three local ones because there are three seats held by Dol-Makjar itself as the birthplace of revolution. Agztash Splitknuckle. Hal's council member who has won a couple elections in a row. There have been some that have come through (but he's so beloved) who is currently tended to in his advanced age (having been an active veteran of the Shapers' War), he's 99.
Jekara Vodik (who is herself part of a proud family and lineage that is part of the Forge Clan, the upper crust of the city). Her son is betrothed to Audessio Cormoray (a member of one of the Sundered Houses). Then there was Effie Parvinas (the first human representative from the Horn District: the Fray and Caravan Hill) based on a large population of humans that have moved to the city (refugees from the various wars that have torn up these other kingdoms).
You guys set a couple plans in motion. You said, "We're gonna go to Tsul'rekshi together to make some very convincing invitations for us."
Long recap today, we haven't played in a while.
Asking Tsul'rekshi to make some persuasive invitations for you so that these Dol-Makjar Council members would come to the following night's showing of KoTher'ai (get a box seat, come take in some history). She agreed on the condition that she be given a private guided tour of the Villa Aurora. It's a great idea. Then she connected with Tyranny and gave you a bat, made out of smoke, in a bottle. She said
"My young lady please let us come and walk in the shadows, you and I, as demons we are wont to do."
We love that shit.
Then she made a passing reference to Hal running for the Revolutionary Council himself and said that he had her vote.
You guys had also sent some magpies out (telling your Magpie soldiers to keep an eye on the roads for any members of the Revolutionary Council or House Cormoray that might be coming down the road).
You asked Byrindra Moss (the librarian of the Grey Tower, the old, slow bullfolk) to produce the voting records of the past as many years as she can get her hands on (records from the Revolutionary Council).
You asked Elodie to keep the kids close. You also told Olgud,
"Get ready. We're gonna have some friends come by tomorrow."
Crosstown, Murray and Azune met with Effie Parvinas in a meeting that did not go very well. There was a sudden staunch reminder that your circles of the past two weeks have been extraordinarily radical. Quite revolutionary. You have been walking in the circles of those to whom the wickedness of the Sundered Houses is a point of naked and material fact. You met somebody who originally voted for the creation of the Chamber of Lords-Advisory.
Dol-Makjar is a city of bubbles. We're all living in a bubble, in that, for some people, Dol-Makjar is the city of the birthplace of revolution and they've all gone and seen "KoTher'ai" and are having the time of their goddamn lives attending the Old Path and being proud of their city's heritage. Then there's a lot of other people who are lost in a place where warlocks openly walk and traffic in the souls of those who don't want to wander a godless underworld when they die and they're looking for anyone with answers (and there's a very bright building that has them). So, it's a complicated city with a lot going on.
We ended our last episode discovering that, of that complexity, not only did you learn from Counselor Parvinas that the Professor Theodoro had been fired. Murray you're realizing over the past week you've been so focused on schemy schemes that something at the Penteveral might've gotten away from you. And that, Hal, one of the things that has happened at the Penteveral is Hero has been expelled.
We are going to cut back to this exact moment. Hal, you are in The Tanners, outside (perhaps a block or two from Tsul'rekshi). I think Tyranny and Wicander, you perceive Hal suddenly bowled over by this news. Hal, what do you do as you internalize this message that Hero has been expelled from the school?

Episode 35: Lead the Way
Last we left our heroes, they were resciing all they could from Hawthorn's Glade, beset by soldiers of the House of Halovar and the Candescent Creed and a group of horrifying faerie poachers (those who make their livelihood hunting the fair folk now separated from Faerie these long eight years (the source of their magic) and aging slowly in the world of Aramán).
You are accompanied by Ulbid Morn and the fairies that you have just saved.
On your quest to venture north, many pieces of business compel you to go further north:
- of the eventual rendezvous you have with Mara the Wing and her Professor in the Golden Orchard (along with returning Alba's soul gem to your sister) and reunining with Aranessa Royce, perhaps.
- also your business takes you north to perhaps rendezvous with King Gus and to, if you can, use the couple of days that you have bought to rescue Ulbid Morn's daughters from the caravan of Tachonis headed north to Houndsport and whatever their plans are with the Sea Door.
You were able successfully earlier today (setting out wth Ulbid Morn) to find a massive shelf of rock that Thimble was able to heave over the mountainside with her enormous strength and send careening down to cause a quite massive landslide that will block the King's Highway for several days.
However, there by the Caller's Perch, you also discovered several wagons of those hunting for fair folk because of the collapse of the undead that walk Dahapshanee. You see the ramifications of those actions (having destroyed the Wraith Tree).
Rushing along the Miller's Road, you were able to save the dryad Hawthorn, but not before her tree had been burnt and destroyed. Separated as you are from the Miller's Road, you swim out into the lake. You are accompanied by various fair folk around you. There's a spit of rock that several gather on. There are several dozen fairies that call Hawthorn's Glade home (but only a few of them are size small or larger). Most of them are quite small. Sprites and pixies and things of that nature.
Surrounding you coming up out of the water as the fire burns behind you, all of the members of the Creed, all of the horrifying fairy and undead hunters (these snarling monster hunters), you see only one remains alive captured under Bolaire's mask. Stepping up from the water, you see a massive myconid. This is Rainbloom, who steps up out of the water holding Soobri's body (the old satyr woman with the bandana where her horns had been cut off her head in an earlier encounter with poachers). You see that Rainbloom steps up saying,
"I could not. I could not save. I could not save her."
You look and see that Skinner is standing right behind Honeysuckle. Honeysuckls is kneeling over Bix, Mak, and Flit (the three sprites) as she weeps, and for the first time, you see SKinner put a hand on Honeysuckle's shoulder and take his little red cap off and put it against his chest, and you see Shuffa (the massive plant creature) holding Rustblossom (this tiny little tuft of grass spirit) and there on top of the spit of rock (as you guys swim out, the fire raging) you see Sallow (this slime-covered, a body at once both pallid and corpse-like, but also green and algae-like; long algae-filled hair coming down her head) holds Hawthorn's body, still living but unconscious. And you can see that Hawthorn is already aging, diminishing quite rapidly. She's going from an adult state (and in the way that bark naturally peels off of a tree over time), you watch as slowly (but still visible to your eyes) as sheaves of bark are beginning to come off of her skin as she is diminishing in size (almost as though she is peeling away outer layers of bark as she grows smaller and smaller).
Sallow looks down, takes a long claw, and gently caresses Hawthorn's face, moving some flowering hair. As she moves it tenderly, she suddenly stops as she sees just the light pressure of brushing her hair aside. It starts to fall out in a clump.
"You saved her life."

Episode 26: Council of Heroes
Folks, it's my delight and privilege to invite us [you?] to a big ol' heapin' helping of Critical Role!
What an adventure do we have in store tonight.
Last we left off with our Schemers. You had just prevented the assassination of King Augustus Valian of Timmony. And are witness to an assassination not being prevented (but instead canceled) by one Photarch Yanessa Halovar, who appears to have resurrected herself with the beaming power of the Light.
Azune, you look down at the ground, still stick with the blood from your sister (who you have healed; saved her life) and she has vanished using a dangerous spell glyph to disappear in this moment.
Hal, you've rushed across the Archanade at the gala, celebrating the soon-to-be opening night of "KoTher'ai" (your play at the Hallowed Round). Looking out and forward, you see that you've essentially defeated this minister in private combat (and no one even knows that happened; they'll just see a shattered library).
You guys watched as: an invisible spellcaster vanished, Mayali Nayar vanished, but the Dominate Person was broken on King Gus' druid advisor, the Hounds of the King are back up.
I think you guys see in this moment, the crowd looking at the radiant appearance of Yanessa Halovar descend as Filoneus drops to his knees in reverent adoration of his mother. Yanessa Halovar looks out and says,
"All shall be made whole. The Beam reaches us all in time. This act of darkness and wickedness will not be allowed to stand."
You see that she reaches out to King Gus and heals him back to full health. Gus looks at her as people begin to weep and applaud.
You look out and see some of the bystanders here. Many of them seem touched with a true religious zeal (as they have witnessed a miracle) and for the first time since the age of the Shapers have witnessed a resurrection occur. King Gus looks, and she says
"Death has no place on the path of the righteous."
Filoneus says,
"She has returned!"
And a cheer from many of the faithful and some Halovar soldiers goes up. Gus turns to look and says,
"No place in the path of the righteous.."
and walks wordlessly away from the Photarch towards his fallen knight at the threshold (who was referred to as Carbrady; killed by an assassin). Gus just moves there, leaving the interaction with the Photarch.

Episode 25: Targeted
Welcome to tonight's episode of Critical Role here at the Archanade.
Our schemy Schemers have been scheming away, and the fomenting seeds of insurrection, sedition, and dare I say, rebellion. Soldiers released from Revolutionary Guard and Sundered Houses alike find themselves directed to warehouses of Hand and Wheel ceramic merchants, finding food and some small amount of pay to keep the fires lit inside. A symbol, a passphrase.
Demodus Blix (graduate student of the Penteveral) rescued from the clutches of Crow Keepers, Fae, and Tachonis alike, knows what happened on the night of the Davinos massacre and has the magic notes to prove that Royce did not abscond to Faerie.
Inspector Grotto informed the Einfasen of a lie that concealed the truth of who was at fault for the murder of Occtis Tachonis.
KoTher'ai's opening night is two nights away (which is what we gathered here at Bolaire's Lloy wing of the Archanade to celebrate)! The Rookery was the first home of Hal and his troupe, following that, it performed for many years at the Lyceum here at the Archanade. What better place to celebrate, raise some funds, get some excitement and just speed on Halandil Fang with his incredible new venture of Dol-Makjar's first full amphitheater. What was supposed to be a night of culture and revelry...
Your group, your little Magpies fluttering around behind the scenes, have begun to develop pieces on the board. Soldiers, friendly merchants, raising money, and unraveling the secrets of what is to come (along with your own steps putting together soldiers, and merchant allies, and academics and students that have been living on couches for almost a week now).
You also were able to use Romina Rountree to find out that the Sundered Houses will be meeting on the night of the play (perhaps for House Tachonis to answer for all of this horrifying bloody work that has been going on in the background).
You, however, have been trying to get this party (and Bolaire put a lot of work into these masks). And the Photarch very rudely did not wear hers, and instead got into a kerfuffle with King Augustus Valian of Timmony (who, long ago, wished to depart the city, but had not been able to pin down the Photarch for a meeting about why exactly her priests are openly calling him a tyrant in his kingdom). Being pulled aside into a banquet chamber off in one of the halls at the Archanade, we find ourselves set out in this arrangement. Gus speaking to the Photarch down here, Sir Filoneus positioned outside. You all have split up into your various ways and I'm going to hand you your minis. I will let you know where you guys would be stationed, more or less.
So, number one, Bolaire and Azune, you would've brought through a back channel...through this hallway to this room where they close the doors over here. Bolaire, the last thing you heard was the cock of a bolt being loaded into a crossbow. The doors have closed around you.
Now we have to resolve a couple things first and then Ill let you ask me as many questions about the battlefield as you want.
So, Murray, you are in the room, invisible. Where in the room invisibly are you?

Episode 24: Good Tidings
Hello, and welcome back to the Schemers Table here in Dol-Makjar for another thrilling episode of Critical Role.
We left off at a moment of pique here at the Seven Stars. Where Varen Kadorn (an old veteran and ally of Lieutenant Azune Nayar) had just let loose the fact that he'd been asked to round up some names of some people that might be interested in quitting their current jobs (or otherwise gathering together due to this ascent of the Sundered Houses); Varen said that he had spoken to a handful of people and had gotten together a list of 350 names. A staggering number. But then again, can you really be that surprised with what now unfolds in the city that there would be that many people?
After several days in a row, following the Schemers' rescue of Demodus Blix from the clutches of the Crow Keepers (still being hunted down by the Tachonis). Demodus is now staying safe at Bolaire's apartment in the Ogrimok Marketplace.
We also saw our Schemers kick into high gear (casting Identify on the Tachonis candle) and realizing whatever foul plot the Tachonis have at work.
Murray seeign visions of far off stone statues (sarcophagi) and a voice calling to fly to the white banners.
What this could mean, you cannot say!
But while you were doing that, Bolaire and Hal were busy getting their hands on the Pariah Blades! It went extremely well! It went so well, in fact (when you were discovered by the Lady Amariya Dacen Cormoray; she weilded the Pariah Blade at your head that she had marked with her own blood, pointed the blade at you) pulling off the Suggestion of the century. Talk about a Suggestion! Got her down into the private vault where she, investigating the coffin of Olbalad, opened it up. I don't know how many times Bolaire has mentioned the need for safety when working with these artifacts. That people lose hands. And Bolaire's sister, the mask Termina (who was the mask worn by the trickster goddess) cracked and in shards, leapt onto the face of a lady of the Sundered House as she turned to say hello to her long lost brother in a cracked, distorted and wavering voice you did not recognize and was sucked back into the mists of the coffin (which slammed shut, leaving all of you stunned, but wealthy in swords designed to kill the gods, which you took first to the Rookery) and then deciding that the paint given to you might be a way to disguise that (that had a nice little illusory cover that would make these powerful weapons read as sort of trivial magic). Those blades were discovered by your daughter's barking troupe and you sold a bunch of tickets that day, so, you know, highs and lows!
You took a night off. You guys have been making your rounds. Hero D'vyen (Hal and Elodie's child) has joined the internship program over at the Archanade. The crooked Lieutenant (Il-Kafsareh) was (with some careful, really strategic narcing from Azune) dismissed from his job.
We find ourselves back at the Seven Stars upstairs here with Varen Kadorn. For our timelines' purposes, you are three days out from the gala (which will be held at the Archanade, at the old Lyceum, celebrating the coming of The Hallowed Round and its players opening of "KoTher'ai"). So time moves ever onwards.
Looking out and around you, you see that Varen Kadorn stays with you in the aviary. You guys did not meet last night. After the wildness of the night in the Archanade, you guys decided to lay low for a day. You've heard some bits and rumors going around. Obviously people (Lord Dacen) came to the Archanade asking after his Lady wife. You've heard things, the rumors of Demodus (his vanishing). People are disappearing. There's beginning to be a feeling of dismay and a little bit of panic in the city (which has been at a heightened state ever since Thjazi's execution).
So that panic, rather than subsiding, is instead increasing. There's a feeling in the air of that dread increasing.
But we return to all of you now seated at your table with Varen Kadorn, who now speaks to you.

Episode 19: Hand & Wheel
We return to Dol-Makjar. We return to the beginning of the same week that we started six month ago.
We return now to the Seven stars. Looking down at Halandil Fan who has just been playing the harpsichord for a laughing crowd of merry partygoers who have returned from a strange reception at the Palazzo Davinos. The past 48 hours have been remarkably eventful. The execution of Thjazi fang, the holding of his Farramh, the quick departure of Kattigan Vale, Teor Pridesire, Thimble, with Wicander Halovar and Tyranny in tow after discovering something horrifying that they did not share before making their way north to seek revenge on Casimir Gavendale and to seek the rescue or recovery of Talcydimir Pridesire (Teor's younger brother).
The Seekers Table headed east with the mother of Hal and her's children, Thaisha Lloy, heading with the late Occtis Tachonis in tow with Julien Davinos and the elven warrior, Vaelus. Headed east in search of the fate of the Royce family and the Davinos in the attack on their house by the dreaded House Tachonis, as well as pursuing a vision across the veil (held by Occtis Tachonis) of an orcish warrior in a strange land, in what looked like the ruins of old Obridimia, an orcish warrior that Thaisha believed might well be your and her son, Alogar.
We return to those who hold some stake in this fair city.
The employed table.
Where you guys have just had (after the night where you discovered the empty Palazzo Davinos, where Azune asked a melted candle to remember itself and followed the footsteps of a spectral fox to the Lloy estate where Murray and Bolaire on a portentous, literally and figuratively, nat 20 created to be the first (at least in your understanding of the history of Aramán) the first revenant or Hollow One, the first undead that, while not living, was fully possessed of its heard, mind, and maybe soul. TBD.)
After Dean Kora Keplenvaisreck's inauguration, Harondus Einfasen's dismissal of the bulk of the Revolutionary Guard, the Lady Amariya Dacen Cormoray's investigation with her own very hands of the Parish Blade that Shay Claw used to kill the god of war, and Hal's day of rehearsal with his troop at The Hallowed Round.
[Shout-out to our Incredible Lore Keepers, Dani Carr, and also to Jared (who put together our amazing timeline here).]
My question is: How many days is it until your play's opening night?
Liam:"I think it's just over, it's like seven or eight days away."
I love that. Theater countdown.
You are gathered here in this space at the Seven Stars, to talk about what is happening to your city. But also, this has just come up. We're going to return to the exact moment we left from our scene (I believe in episode 11) to Azune and Murray at the top of the staircase looking down at the common room where Bolaire just pulled Hal away to speak of controversial changes to the play. Murray you look at Azune, who has just gotten this big question, which is: Orus Blade (a merchant of a potter's company here in Dol-Makjar) who just shared with you his suspicions around this strange gala at the Palazzo Davinos) confided in you and said that there are many in the city who see Thjazi as one of theirs, and that his execution is a bridge too far to stomach, that essentially said, "if I hear something, can I bring it here to Lachmir?" As he said that, Azune, you (looking at him) break that See Invisibility spell glyph. You had to ask yourself, "how did Thjazi know that the spell glyph was a dud if he didn't break it? What happened?

Episode 20: The Vanishing
We return to the city of Dol-Makjar where our Schemers Table (we're off to a hot start gang, boy howdy!). People are getting tracked to their homes, there's some secret people, people have Very different apartments from each other, and that's fun to me. How often do you get to see a D&D character's apartment? Not enough. That's what I say. That's how I feel.
Last we left off (after the events of Thjazi Fang's execution and his wake) those left behind (as Soldiers and Seekers left the city to seek and soldier elsewhere) were our four most employed heroes.
Team Employment
After your first conspiratorial get-together at the Seven Stars Tavern, after realizing that (the Lady Cormoray was interested in teh Pariah Blades, and the Lord Einfasen had dismissed half the Revolutionary Guard or more, and Tachonis had come in on top of the Penteveral, installing Dean Kora Keplenvaisreck, and the body of Thjazi Fang) had resulted in all of this attention and fanfare in the week of some-odd preceding the arrival of Murzat (the play that Hall will unveil with the beginnings of the Hallowed Round, a brand new theater here in this space).
You began your conversation in the aviary of the Seven Stars (an old tavern within the Rookery) where indeed, you actually overheard the arrival of some gentry who had been to the gala at the Palazzo Davinos (a place that all of you had entered in the dead dark of night to find a melted black-and-silver candle after a massacre had occurred and been cleaned up as though it had never happened at all). It seemed that people had arrived to discover an illusory gala and that the Sundered House of Royce had returned to Faerie. That's cool. Except for the weeping family members of staff and servants wondering where their family members had gone. Had they been absconded to Faerie without a word's notice?
Very peculiar.
You spoke to Horace Blade, who was a party-goer there, that you knew as a merchant (someone you had met through circles of Hero's mother, Elodie). You knew Horace as a merchant, a hardworking Dol-Makjar merchant who helped you figure out the mystery of your spell glyphs. And the fact that Thjazi's escape glyph (even though it had been a fake and would've doomed him to death) he had never actually seemed to break. Why didn't he?
Horace led you through a deep analysis based on a lot of insight he has into ceramics and magic crafting that (basically the one that Thimble had had was janky and made by criminals and had a little Faerie edge to it, but in being janky was true blue; that was a Real Misty Step glyph (which by the way, means that you guys do have a Misty Step glyph). The really nice looking one that was extremely expensive, that was the dud. That was the one made to seem like a Misty Step glyph (such that it could bypass Azune's detection and rest without the ability to actually do so) in Thjazi's coat.
Questions abound, but Horace also lets you know that a bunch of these blank glyph tablets had gone missing. Orus Blade's family business, The Hand and Wheel (which is the name of his ceramics company) he let you know that they had had a bunch of blanks go missing. That basically were finely made enough (the right materials and with the right arcane components) to receive a spell; but on their way to being made, they got knocked over and a bunch of the blanks were taken. This is the equivalent of stealing Sudafed, right?
You also realized realized that you had seen that symbol of Hand and Wheel before on the amphora of paints delivered by Bolaire to the Hallowed Round, currently being used to paint the theater that had been mentioned as one of the last mental statements of Thjazi to Hal in his dying moments.
You took off from the Seven Stars after talking about all the things you needed to do. You talked about Biteen Tachonis. You talked about Romina Roundtree (a maid of the Einfasen who's a siste3r of one of your company members). You talked about getting the Guard together. We have to act. We have to act! You talked about going and making nice with Dean Kora.
Arriving back at Hal's, you met Lord Filoneus Halovar as Azune (invited to stay with Hal) decided to stand guard and successfully turned what was an extremely dangerous encounter into one of the Lords Halovar (after wishing you a soon-to-be-happy Candle Feast) believes you to be a man of faith. You spent the night in Hal's home. A tearful moment of processing that Thjazi is truly gone, and of course, all of the terror that now befalls you. You spent the night there.
The following morning, you headed out. You began your morning by finding Varen Kadorn at the Falcon's Rest (at the memorial to those that died in the Falconer's Rebellion) and he said,
"I've been guarding for one of the vassal houses of House Royce. We're getting crazy notice, there might have been some arrests, something's going on. Am I in trouble?"
You answered, "We all need to get together. Something's afoot, you should quit, and we should all get together and start working against this."
Murray went and had a heart-to-heart with Dean Kora. Got in her good graces, amazingly. Wherein she agreed with a letter that Bolaire had written talking about an internship program and that students of the Penteveral should come work. Kora (knowing the Cormoray's special interest in the Archanade) thought that was a brilliant idea and gave you a big stack of applicants and said,
"Get it sorted by the end of the day!"
And told you to hire some [Teaching Assistants] with a small stipend, but not to hire Demodus Blix, (who missed his class this morning). How odd. Demodus being a well-known wizard of the Penteveral who's beloved by all (a kid with a lot of school spirit who had to finance his own way at the school, and did so with a lot of performing in the Ogrimok Marketplace before that was made illegal).
Bolaire had a tense exchange with Makmaz Gelfidar who essentially talked about the Selodyne Wing and the switching of the wings (or the idea that the Selodyne and Lloy wing would have a big uprooting of all their artifacts) and talked about,
"The wind is blowing one way. Are we going to do the right thing and be brave?"
Makmaz says, "I refuse to be brave, but I will talk to you and tell you what's happening."
Azune was called to the Palazzo Davinos to investigate this strange Royce absconding to Faerie.
Hal had a morning full of errands (disguised as an older orc) carting his dead brother's body in a wheelbarrow. First stop, you dropped him off with Olgud saying,
"Hang tight, my man. Can you go bury my brother real quick?"
Olgud was taking him up to the cemetery near where your father is buried. You then talked to your fight choreographer, Inez Rountree, saying,
"I think we should talk to your sister tonight."
(who works for the Einfasen starting to pull threads)
Then you headed to the Grey Library in Marud, where Byrindra Moss (an elder bullfolk librarian) helped you try to find anything about magic masks and what the history of that might be (which directed you to a book in the library "Visages of Creation"). A book that no longer is on the shelves.
Fun.
You stepped out to see the arrival of a massive entourage bearing the three red hounds on a white field (the flag of Timmony) announcing the arrival of King Augustus Valian who's nowhere to be found. They don't know where he is. Announced by a faithful hound who could speak in Kahadi.
We return to the Archanade, the massive museum here in the heart of Dol-Makjar, wherein Bolaire is hard at work after his meeting with Makmaz and where our friend Murray Mag'Nesson has just arrived with a big stack of papers. Where would Murray find Bolaire here?

Episode 21: King of Cards
We return to the Schemers Table, here with their schemy schemes here in the city of Dol-Makjar as the sun sets on the City of Shields. We find that our companions have been oh so busy setting up various internship programs, talking about obfuscating through paper work, and just liberating the arrested Master of Dramatis Arcana atthe Hallowed Round. Misha Undragor, with a split lip, has been pulled from the holding cell at the Brethren Hall, having been arrested by an associate of Azune Nayar (Shemad Il-Kafsareh, who had arrested Misha on suspicion of collaboration with Demodus Blix, who they got a report had been seen stealing from Obrimus Manor, the home hall here in Dol-Makjar of the Sundered House of Tachonis).
Your adventures in our last episode saw an investigation within the Palazzo Davinos, with some arcane abjurative scrubbing of the magical events that you knew for a fact took place there, with some intercession on behalf of Lieutenant Nayar, and some quick arcane illusion work and enchantment on the part of Murray Mag'Nesson and Bolaire Lathalia.
The Inquisitor Groto was made to see a false vision of true events, and reported to the Lord Harondus Einfasen that there had been foul play. This in fact was no journey into Faerie, but was instead something far more foul, the murder of [Occtis, Julien's father, and various servants].
Sometimes fiction must be rendered to find the truth.
Speaking of fiction rendering truth, Hal released his cast early, having seen that everything's going well (rehearsals are going well for the play) but Misha never showed up. On arriving, we also saw some investigation into this paint that was brought to Hal's doorstep by his late brother, Thjazi. And with a massive group effort, our unanimously arcane table was able to piece together that under the minor illusory residue of some very high-quality paints, the background hum of the cosmos (Aramán rippling with the powers of conjuration and necromancy). While the ultimate effect of this was not gleaned, some really interesting theories were posited that seemed to align with the available information. Our Arcane Marshal Azune said,
"Some of this may be, if it doesn't seem to be a finished spell (the nature of components, and seeing, in fact, before her diviniatory eyes) Murray Mag'Nesson saw that, yeah, there was something missing from this (as after all, a stage can only be set, but the play's the thing that finishes the spell)."
Looking at the ripples of magical tapestry before her, Murray could only sit in awe and reverence and say,
"This is gonna be a damn good show."
After which you guys thundered out across the city to go and find (as we have stated) Misha Undragor (who'd been arrested) and were able to piece together some pieces of this 'Demodus Blix mystery'. This young gnomish illusionist who we had seen (in memory) meet Bolaire (who he even named his little soapbox (that he performed his marketplace illusions on) the Bolaire Center for the Performing Arts). This lovely young gnome, who you had offered to look after as best you could, had lost his ability to to perform in the marketplace (and therefore it seemed perhaps had maybe taken a job, one that he perhaps should not have). However, hope remains, as if your enemies are searching for him, that can only mean one thing: They don't yet have him.
We return to Dol-Makjar, here outside the Brethren Hall, in The Fray (just south of Rubble Cliff) as you exit with Misha (who, Hal invited to stay with at his home in The Rookery). Misha looks out at all of you.
"Those Marshals certainly meant business. Hal, are you certain it's all right for me to stay with you?"

Episode 22: The Point of No Return
We return to the Schemers Table here in Dol-Makjar, deep in the sewers under Caravan Hill where our brave adventurers have gone underground. One adventurer sort of becoming an adventurer fully this night.
Indeed, Halandil Fang, waiting at the gate, looking down and realizing that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and the road goes ever on. This road led down into some nasty sewers (because you've been hot on the trail of Demodus Blix, the illusionist grad student of the Penteveral, who went missing after he discovered he helped the House of Tachonis, perhaps unbeknownst to him, cover up the massacre at the Palazzo Davinos).
Having sprung Misha Undragor from prison, you guys had an eventful night at the Seven Stars tavern. Hal connecting with Romina Rountree with all of the intel she had from working at the Stahlkeep (the manse here in Dol-Makjar of House Einfasen).
Bolaire played a hand of cards with a horrifying merchant named Druspin Fortunada, a traveling wizard named Arnesha Vane (having taken the seat of gnomish smuggler, Pimley Morn), and played a hand of cards with King Augustus Valian, who has come and absconded from the Seven Stars as Hound of the King, Sir Marten, came and found his liege and got him the hell out of this bar to get back to the business at hand, staying with Mr. Bowsprit, a merchant that you have some familiarity with.
Murray pinned down Pimley and found out that he had indeed been part (at first) of trying to get Demodus Blix out of town after whatever task he accomplished for the Tachonis (it seemed that he must have gotten the hell out of dodge from seeing the writing on the wall). And Pimley realized that this was a little too hot for him and dumped the desperate Demodus (who was depending on him for help) into the clutches of the Crow Keepers to whom Demodus owed some money.
Following the Crow Keepers after Murray made contact with an ally in Caravan Hill (the soothsayer Temelow, who gave you a reading of your cards speaking surreptitiously of the eye she had been keeping on the Guard Tower (the old tavern frequented by the leadership of the Crow Keepers)).
The Crowkeepers, you were told, were in disarray. Their Guildmaster Solomon, having been killed several days ago by the elven warrior Vaelus, who then left town after the world's first known revenant was created. They seemed to be in disarray and took Demodus into their own custody after paying Pimley Morn handsomely for doing so.
You went deep underground (where you discovered this hiding place of the Crow Keepers and them speaking to something inhuman in the chamber beyond.
A careful illusion was cast and created for you to look out and essentially draw some of the Crow Keepers away. This city thief is affected by a Phantasmal Force and heard an illusion from Hal and a rock hurled into the muck water beyond, and many of them are about to peel out.
However we must resolve at the top of initiative, one of them who spotted a strange sight of a mask peering around the corner here.

Episode 23: Buried Truths
We return to the depths of the sewers underneath Dol-Makjar as our Schemers walk forward (boots drenched in the sludge of the city, blades whet with blood of Crow Keepers and foul fae alike) having rescued Penteveral grad student Demodus Blix from certain death or worse (at the hands of Crow Keeper or, if they had their way, House Tachonis, that still desperately, we presume searches for him).
Schemers, you've had a fucking day.
After the events of Thjazi's funeral, you all kicked into high gear, having chosen the aviary at the Seven Stars tavern as your de facto headquarters (where using what chutzpah, cleverness, strength of will, or skill at arms you have, along with the pull you do have at various institutions of the city) decided to try and do something about the sudden grasping clutch of power coming at the hands of the Chamber of Lords-Advisory (which is the institution that represents the will of the Sundered Houses here in Dol-Makjar).
Kicking into high gear, many plans went into work all at once. Reaching out to Varen Kadorn and various other veterans of the Falconer's Rebellion that you were friends with, making an attempt to use this program to get volunteers from the Penteveral to work at the Archanade to give each of you more reason to be working together (trying to slow down this sudden switch of wings being initiated by House Cormoray).
And Hal, working as best you can (after having won the deed and title for the Hallowed Round) to get "KoTher'ai" up on its feet. All of these political machinations, by the way, running parallel to whatever bizarre arcane machinations the late Thjazi Fang had, as you looked at whatever the fuck this paint was. What was this paint? And the humming magic underneath these murals?
Well, there are a million things at work in the city all at once. You've got far too much on your plate. However, Demodus Blix is rescued. Having told you all about the attempted coverup of the slaughter at the Palazzo Davinos (which you are well aware of, having indeed created the illusion of true events; the illusion of the true events of the murder of Occtis Tachonis) though it didn't stick, and the slaughter of those vassals and men at arms of House Royce and Davinos at the Palazzo Davinos.
Demodus told you all about horrifying things said by Ophelia Seremai, the ministrations of one Trimus Tachonis and different soldiers of the House Tachonis that were there. Various hints about a falcon being brought to Obrimus Manor here in Dol-Makjar, certain things about someone saying that they wondered if an Argosian delegation was going to wish well to King Gus, who's now visiting from Timmony.
So much is going on, but what you do have is a rescued student who has proof positive of betrayal amongst the Sundered Houses. Can he be protected long enough? And who would you present that information to, right? Many, many questions. But you now walk through shadows together having succeeded. Hal, you walk out of the darkness having fundamentally altered your life. You are an adventurer, just like your three companions. No longer the version of you holding a baby, looking at your brother on a horse, is long gone as you exit the shadows.
Getting above ground, the question stands here of, 'Will you journey together?' Now the streets are much emptier and you will certainly be seen traveling together if you head off in one direction. You see that Demodus is here with you. Where do you turn as you exit the sewers?
