Beky folding bicycles (www.bekycycles.com)

This website just launched, I think maybe yesterday. I previously saw a factory tour video that left me intrigued. It looks like they're doing some interesting work iterating on the trifold bicycle design.

I have my parents' "matched his&hers" Centurion racing bikes that I feel would be a shame to just throw in a dumpster, but I've no idea how to find people who would appreciate them.

So my primary question here is: d'you think these are at all worth keeping? I'm not interested in cash, merely avoiding waste.

Secondary, how do I find a community? Is this it?

They're Centurion bikes, with a sticker near the crank saying "Infinity cr-mo double tapered butted tubing". Silly me took the pic from the wrong side, sorry - Front and rear derailleurs are stamped "Suntour Cyclone 7000", it's a 2*6 arrangement. The levers are on the frame and go clicky-click when shifting.

There are many like it but this one is mine.

From the Shifter channel on peertube / YT

Quite surprised to hear cycling was as high as 64% of trips in Beijing until the 1990s, but then everything changed after The Automotive Industry Policy from 1995 to 2005, which basically made it into your average western car centric hell hole.

Luckily, it seems to be changing for the better after Covid as the video explores it in more depth

From the Oh The Urbanity! channel on peertube/YT

The conclusion at around 6:50 is quite interesting too

Paraphrasing:

Even if interviewees and data from Ipsos report "Cycling Across the World 2022" (PDF!) says there is no correlation between cycling for transportation and exercise/competition/recreation, if you have access to a bike and feel comfortable to use it (aka there is a decent infrastructure), you are more likely to get involved in those activities

Bike friendly countries just made it normal to ride a bike, even if people might not think much of it as they are just used to do it

New Wheel (and tire) Day (sh.itjust.works)

Just upgraded my Lauf Uthald's stock wheels and tires (DT Swiss e1800 23, Goodyear Eagle F1R) to ICAN Aero 40 II, Silca Protocol RCR.

800 grams lighter. So that's not nothing.

First carbon wheels on my first carbon bike. So I have little experience to compare with. But first ride went well. First thing I noticed was the sound. They kind of sing. I definitely noticed better cornering and smoother over small bumps and joints.

I am happy with my purchase.

Had a blowout over the weekend and was restocking my bag, so I thought to share.

I've got:

  • Tire levers
  • Combination allen key
  • $20
  • Tube w cellophane
  • CO2 w cracker

Looking at this list, I should probably add a quick link. They're sitting in my tool chest right next to me. My saddle bag is also right next to me... now would be a great time to do that.

Anyways? How do you all pack?

Is it time to try out a 32er? I want this for my commuter as its light and big wheels for better roll over. My concern is of course safety, but all carbon fibre XC bikes are made in china so maybe they have experienced quality control. The novelty factor is also a big part of it, I wanted a 36er, but this is much cheaper. The quote from the manufacturer is below, but $1100 usd for the frame fork and wheels.

"32er hardtail frame FM132 UDH hanger can do $369/set (black matte) include frame+headset+Rear axle FM132 front fork price: 105USD

·32" MTB 28mm XC rims Light weight version UD matte 2135=270usd ·NOVATEC BOOST D791SB-B15/D462SB-B12, front 15110mm, rear 148*12mm, 28-28H=119usd ·Pilla 1423 Spokes, Black (28+28+spare 2)*0.6=34.8usd ·SAPIM Nipples (28+28+spare 2)*0.4=23.2usd ·Wheel assembly cost 20usd/pair Total: 467usd/pair

The shipping fee to Canada for a frame + a set of wheels is 150USD, and you need to clear customs yourself."

Any recommendations or advice on lightweight (compact) bike covers?

I keep my bike under a roof at home but I'm thinking about getting a cover that I can take with me to protect the bike when it's parked up while I'm out.

Something compact would be ideal, so it doesn't take up too much space in my pannier but weight is less of a concern since I put an electric motor on the bike. It won't be getting used every day either, so it wouldn't need to be bomb-proof. I'd like to keep the whole bike dry ideally but the biggest concern is keeping the battery and controller on my frame dry as I'm not sure how water-resistant they are.

After so much elbow oil grease (thank you @Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works ), this is the result I'm proud of: A working Graziella, ready to take me around Salento (area in Pulia, south of Italy)(maybe that's too much... maybe I'll move just in the town 😅)

There is still quite some rust, but the pedals flow and the brakes work well (enough).

Do you know this old folding-bike style? The original one was called Graziella, in the '60s, and then all the Italian manufacturers produced their version. But I think it's not known outside of Italy. Cheap, sturdy, practical... The old ones sell for a good price, if in good state (not this one 🙃 )

Also a picture while I was restoring it:

I recently was given a Yose Power e-bike and I'm having trouble getting it working. I got the battery charged up and the display shows my speed when I'm riding, but when I operate the thumb throttle I don't feel any assistance or extra speed. The wires appear to be all connected per the manual I found online and the battery indicator shows a full charge. I have the key and tried turned fully both directions. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

I recently electrified my beloved steel tourer, and the extra speed combined with worsening road surface in my area is making me want a bit more comfort. Getting older might be a factor as well 😛

Has anyone tried suspension seatposts? Are they effective? Are there any downsides, besides a small amount of extra weight?

Beautiful weather today. Slightly overcast, no rain, not too hot, not too windy, perfect for bicycling.

Number of bicycles seen on the local road: Zero other than my own. Number of vehicles powered by infernal combustion engines: About three million, only two of which gave the impression that they were trying to kill me.

All I ask is that when I'm inevitably struck down by an SUV, someone puts up one of those little dead bicyclist monuments at the side of the road, that it might serve for a season or two as yet another little reminder of how stupid is the Canadian habit of driving everywhere you go every day of the year and then complaining incessantly about the high price of gasoline.

Do you have any creative ideas on how to reuse old tires? I have some at the end of their life and I think that throwing them away would result in them not being recycled anyway. Any ideas for inner tubes is welcome too

Edit: Thank you everyone for the answers. For those who want a summary, the suggestions are chain stay protection, edge bumper, water insulation, rubber bands, hanger for repair, elastic fastener, fenders and finger stalls for fishing (or throw them in the fire place)

I'm looking for a new bicycle to replace my stolen gravel bike, and one of the options I have is a 12,6kg full CrMo steel framed gravel / trekking bike that seems cheap and robust enough. My only concern is that my previous bike was 9-10 kilos, with an aluminium body and carbon fork, and it rode really well, so i'm a bit worried it might not be as fun on longer rides.

So that got me thinking: how much weight could I reduce by switching from a steel fork to a carbon fork, and how easy is it to do it myself? Would it be worth it?
