I notice that this community is lacking an icon and banner. On the old community, we had a post like this to brainstorm/crowdsource. Looking back through my old files, I still have a bunch of the images that I had suggested:

  • Kinda funny Billy Bob Thornton impression
  • Jenna thinks it's an Oprah impression.
  • Jenna does "No" in Improv, proving that she's either selfish or ignorant of her own artform.
  • Jenna thinks, or is willing to BS, that what she's doing will pass for Billy Bob
  • Jenna is delusional enough to think the audience will love this.

The show was great at packing multiple angles into a couple of lines. Any other examples?

A series of clips from 30 Rock with certain words beeped out to change the meaning of the sentence.

I recommend that you enable subtitles.

Background

In 30 Rock S2E14 "Sandwich Day", Tracy's left ring finger is wrapped in white gauze. The bandage is present in every scene in which his hand is visible in this episode, but it is never explained or alluded to in any way. The bandage appears again throughout S2E15 "Cooter", but is gone in S3E1 "Do-Over". Tracy had spent S2E13 "Succession" just writing his porn video game with Frank, and his final scene in that episode shows his finger unbandaged. There is no onscreen reason given for his finger to be wrapped starting in his first scene of "Sandwich Day".

  • S2E13 "Succession": No bandage
  • S2E14 "Sandwich Day": Bandage
  • S2E15 "Cooter": Bandage
  • S3E1 "Do-Over": No bandage

Possibilities

I can think of two major possibilities for what is going on here.

1. Real injury

The simplest explanation would be that this was a real-world injury that they just do not want to bring attention to because they had not written anything about it. It does almost seem like Tracy Morgan is often intentionally angling his body/hand so that his finger is not in shot. That would be similar to how James Doohan (Scotty in Star Trek) would hide the fact that he was missing a finger in all but a few rare shots in Star Trek. This could be Morgan trying to hide a personal injury that his character was not necessarily supposed to have.

With that said, it is still very visible in many shots. It may just be that it appears obscured in many shots simply because it is his left hand and Morgan/Jordan seems to favor his right hand, so his left hand is just often naturally not in the shot.

2. Cut cold open

Unlike all other regular episodes, "Sandwich Day" does not have a cold open. The episode just starts off with the musical title sequence that usually plays right after the cold open in most episodes. While researching this episode, I cannot find much of any discussion about why this episode lacks a cold open. The best guess I have seen has to do with the fact that this season was affected by the writers' guild strike that year and how due to that, perhaps there was simply no cold open even written for this episode. On the other hand, perhaps they wrote, filmed, and edited the episode with a cold open, and decided to remove the scene at a point when it was too late in production to replace the scene with something else.

For a somewhat similar situation, consider the Office (US) S6E8 "Koi Pond". This episode had originally aired with a controversial cold open, and was re-edited to use the first post-intro scene as the new cold open instead. All reruns, DVDs, and streaming services just have this edited version of the episode. Perhaps this episode of 30 Rock had a similarly controversial cold open, only it got pulled at the last minute before the episode ever actually aired (unlike that episode of the Office).

Whatever the reason for not having a cold open in the final cut, it is possible that there originally was a scene that had showed Tracy injuring his finger. This would explain why the character's finger was bandaged for a full two episodes.

Conclusion

In the end, my guess is that Morgan had injured his finger in some way and they just did not want to bring attention to the bandage. Morgan probably intentionally tried to angle the bandage out of the shot at times, but he and the director did not find it was very important to put too much effort into making sure he kept it out of shot at all times. It's not all that distracting, and if anybody noticed it, that would be easy for anyone to rationalize that this character could have injured himself. All that said, the lack of a cold open in this episode is still very suspect. The timing is perfect for the potential for a cut scene that had shown Tracy injuring his finger as part of some eccentric shenanigans.

I had posted this as a response to a recent (at the time) news article about Jerry Seinfeld visiting Epstein Island. The post was immediately removed by the admin, citing the no politics rule. Which I thought was a bit ridiculous, as it's news if anything, not politics. But you can argue that anything is politics, so I didn't feel like fighting it. I did make this altered version, which technically fit the rules that stated "no politics outside of what is mentioned in the show" because I blocked out words so that all that was left was actual dialog from the episode. But I didn't end up posting it at all. Not sure if this joke makes much sense now considering it's no longer a timely reference.

Watching the 30 Rock episode "100" again recently had me questioning what changes there were in the different versions of that episode that there are, and I sought out my old post that I had made on !30rock@dubvee.org that called out all the differences. Unfortunately, that instance is gone now, so that post is nowhere to be found. Fortunately, I had a rough draft for that post saved in my files, so I am going to post that here now. This post will be old news to anyone who used to be a part of that community, but since so many users were actually banned from that instance entirely, this may actually be entirely new to many. Original post below:

Season 5 Episodes 20-21 is a two-part episode titled "100". When it was originally broadcast, both parts were shown on the same night. I presume this is the cut that is included on the Blu-ray that I have: both parts combined into one long (42:18) continuous episode. But on other home media (including streaming services such as Peacock), and presumably in syndication, each of the two parts is instead recut into an individual episode with a running time of about 21:25 each. It seems that part one was originally a minute or so longer than part two, so part one had some jokes cut out and part two had some added in.

So, I nerded out a bit and played both versions side-by-side, taking notes of the differences. Here are my findings:

Part one differences

timestamp original timestamp recut
3:50 Pam, onscreen, shouts "I can't sit in a booth!" 3:50 still photo of Pam onscreen
4:54 "It would be horrible! The only thing I want attached to my funbags are celebrity DJs" 4:51 "It would be horrible!"
6:05 the flashback of Lutz falling while carrying pudding also includes Liz's/Jack's reactions
11:27 "The media won't let you embarrass yourself? Be like Michael McDonald and take it to the streets" 11:19 "The media won't let you embarrass yourself?"
12:33 recurring hobo pitches sketch to the writers waiting outside "What about a sketch about how the Empire State Building is controlling us with electricity?" "Come on, get out of here!"
15:23 Sideways Jack shouts "The real Jack Donaghy could handle a little gas leak!" followed by a deep sniff
15:54 News interview with drowning biker that Tracy had saved "He just pulled me out of the water and said 'Don't tell anyone I did this.' I didn't even get a chance to congratulate him on his Oscar" "'Modesty' and 'heroism'; two words forever synonymous with Tracy Jordan"
19:41 Paul's coworker cuts into his conversation with Jenna "Break's over, Paul. Crew meeting in Lady Chanterelle's office. He's pissed."
20:39 "Okay, I did call you, but I was not in my right mind. I mean, how could I have been, to call you after everything you've done?" Flashback to a few Dennis moments including a new scene in a restaurant, romantically shaking waitress's hand "It's Tonya, right? Wonderful service" waitress leaves "Could you maybe not hit on the waitress right in fro--" "CHEW AND SCREW! Run, dummy!" Dennis runs away from table, Liz follows "Ugh, dammit! Dennis! I checked a coat!" 19:54 "Okay, but I was not in my right mind."
21:19 "No, you know what I feel? You were a mistake" 20:09 "No, you were a mistake"
20:38 "To be continued, dummies" followed by the credits over top of a series of musical flashbacks

Part two differences

timestamp original timestamp recut
0:00 "Previously, on 30 Rock" followed by recap of part one
0:41 Elevator ding "This is us, Ms. Lemon. Let's walk together like Laverne and Shirly" Kenneth tries to link arms, Liz fights him off "Oh, I'm sorry. I'll keep talking about the bird!" followed by opening credits
3:26 while throwing cash at crying strippers "How about a little less self-respect and a little more squatting?"
26:29 "OJ Simpson - who texted me earlier today." 5:31 "OJ Simpson - who texted me earlier today. What should I write back?"
30:21 "Hey, Greta Johannsen, your animal wrangler" "My god, you're beautiful" 9:24 "Hey, Greta Johannsen, your animal wrangler. I don't want to alarm my other wildlife, but all the canaries for the coal mining sketch seem to have slipped off to meet Garuda in the sky" "My god, you're beautiful"

It was hard to find much Star Trek because Liz is not a "nerdery slut." She likes Star Wars.

Jack didn't seem to care much for either, though.
