Microsoft and Salesforce both have very positive free cash flow... but in any case that isn't profit. All 4 of the companies I listed are still very profitable (Alphabet/google being the one "exception" where they are still wildly profitable but down from q3 2024 vs q3 2026). But even in the Alphabet and Amazon cases, they have negative free cash flow because they are investing like crazy in AI. This doesnt mean they aren't profitable it means they are using their historic performance to make a big bet on the future. This is fundamentally very different from the frontier lab companies who have never been profitable and are staying afloat mostly from cash injection from big tech (Anthropic is an interesting one that may have just turned the corner).

It's fine to have moral, labor, or environmental objections to "AI" (which is a very stupid name for some specific applications of machine learning) but I would expect Lemmy to have a higher level of discourse around this stuff that is actually rooted in reality.

Huh? The frontier model companies aren't operating at a profit but all the major enterprise tech companies (Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, Amazon, etc) are using huge amounts of AI in the SDLC and beyond and certainly are operating at a profit...

Fair enough. There's also a nice history of cyber culture stuff in the 90s (FringeWare Review for example, though interesting to note Paco Nathan has long since relocated to Northern California). And obviously UT is a good school, I saw a great Ween show at Stubbs once, etc.

I was just in Austin last week and every time I go there and then come home to Berkeley I'm reminded how much I love where I live. And esp with teenage daughters how I'd never live somewhere that doesn't respect their fundamental rights.

All of Austin is like this. It's really incredibly boring, very little to do (esp if you like natural beauty and the outdoors), and all has a mid tier feel. San Antonio at least has some neat architecture but Austin feels like one giant strip mall. I don't think I'd ever leave coastal northern California (even with absurd taxes that aren't actually used in a society improving way) but if I really wanted to avoid taxes at least parts of Nevada are close to the Sierras, or close to Zion.

Dutch tens are all pretty "normal" do you mean Danish? (Danish uses a x20 math for 60 and 80, but then 50, 70, and 90 are 2.5*20, 3.5*20, 4.5*20, except they dropped the "times 20" in the words over time)

Aww man, that sounds like what our future is going to hold unfortunately. It really hit me this past December we moved into a 2 story house. Almost her whole life Delia slept with my youngest daughter (now almost 14 herself, as soon as she moved to her own toddler bed Delia claimed it as hers to share), but in the new house the bedrooms are all up a big, steep, wood flight of stairs. The first night she tried to make it up and her hips couldn't handle it, so some tears were shed and we got her a nice kennel to sleep in downstairs. Now she doesn't seem to mind (and my daughter eventually got over it) but that made concrete how old she's getting.

    My condolences.

How did you know when it was time? My dog (Delia) is soon to be 14, vizsla/pit mix so relatively big dog. Had skin cancer a few years back, almost died from an internal infection that led to abscesses on her aortic wall some years before that (as best as the vet figured a possum fight led to her skin healing over and the infection going internal). She now has lots of skin tags and fatty cyst type growths, and has to wear diapers inside as whenever she stands up (with some difficulty due to hip dysplasia/back leg arthritis) she pees a bit. But she still loves (short) walks, eats and drinks well, doesn't seem to be in any pain.

All the dogs I've had to this age ended up with some dramatic health issues and a quick end. Not sure if that shoe will drop with Delia or if one day she just won't wake up in the morning... but my biggest fear is her being in pain and suffering and us not realizing it.

Linda Mar taco bell is a whole different level. Where else can you surf a usually barely decent often closing out wave with various degrees of nasty runoff from the parking lot, 10,000 kooks, and great whites, and then take a break on a cold norcal beach drinking a boozy Baja blast freeze?

(As I type all that out I realize it doesnt sound great but honestly Linda Mar can sometimes be totally heaven on earth)
