Stargate SG-1 S4E15 "Chain Reaction"

I watched the new podcast A Full Circle with Michael Shanks recently. While they are throwing out a bunch of fun facts, there were only a few things that stuck out to me as information that was actually new to me:

  1. There was more nudity planned. It is well-known that the pilot episode that aired had a scene that was controversial among the producers because the network was really pushing to add nudity but the writers and whatnot did not want to make that kind of show. The pilot episode had a "director's cut" of sorts that cut up that Shau're scene so that there was less visible nudity. What was news to me was the fact that they had actually filmed several nude scenes. The airman who was abducted in the first scene had a nude scene, they had hired some local strippers to lounge around naked in the harem scene, and it sounds like there were likely more other nude scenes that they just didn't really explain in the podcast. They had fought to cut all the nude scenes, with the final compromise being to keep just the Shau're scene because it acted as exposition demonstrating how the goa'uld work. Jonathan Glassner insisted that it was just the two scenes (airman and Shau're), but Michael Shanks assumed he was just forgetting the details and that there was more.
  2. Skaara was going to be SG-1. In the first drafts of the script, Skaara was planned to join as one of the members of the newly-formed SG-1 team. I am not sure how the rest of the team was looking at this point (was Teal'c a member as well?), but I found that interesting. It was after the actor confirmed he would not be available for a full lead role like that that they rewrote the script so that Skaara stayed abducted and future episodes could focus on freeing him.
  3. The eighth/ninth chevron were originally intended to connect to a couple other specific planets. Stargate was originally dreamed up as a trilogy of films (long before anyone considered a TV series) and the stargate itself was always shown to have nine chevrons. The first film utilized the seventh chevron to connect to one planet, then the second film would utilize the eighth chevron to connect to a new planet, and the third film would utilize the ninth and final chevron to connect to another new planet. But for whatever reason, the plans for the trilogy fell through, they let someone else take the idea and make it into a TV show, and they came up with a different purpose for the nine chevrons.
  4. There is an HD version of the Final Cut that is not publicly available. This two-part episode had been later recut as the "Final Cut" and released on DVD (blog post that goes into the differences in the versions). Years later, after multiple Blu-ray pressings of the original series, the only way to watch the "Children of the Gods - Final Cut" is still on that DVD from 2009. But David Read made a quick mention that he has watched and enjoyed an HD version of the Final Cut that is not available to the public. I am not sure if that means that was an advanced screening or something and that we will eventually see a Blu-ray release of that soon or what he was referring to.

So. I never watched the show in order until recently. Im on the late season 2 episode with the wormhole and I think I was scratching my head before with some other episodes as I thought it was two way. That episode finally made it clear it was one way. Also will add a mildly infuriating but do a community search for stargate does not bring up this community.

One episode per day, for months. Then you reach "Unending".

What do you do next?

Bonus:

Since I have run out of anything else to post, I went through the Stargate folder on my NAS and found a bunch of stuff that I had made over the years that I felt didn't deserve a post because they didn't quite work out as well as what I had in mind or something.

In Stargate SG-1 S10E6 "200", during the puppet bit, there is a quick shot with Walter typing on a computer by wiggling his puppet hands over the keyboard. If you pause and look at the keyboard, a bunch of the keys spell out "ALEX SUCKS DICKS".

This is likely an inside joke at the expense of the writer and script coordinator Alex Levine. Or perhaps they were actually advertising their own services.

  • Stargate SG-1 S10E6 "200"
  • 30 Rock S6E13 "Grandmentor"

This is a crossover with what is probably my favorite joke from 30 Rock.

ZOIKN1yPEQiIxEy.webp

For a bit of context, if you are not familiar with 30 Rock: The show is a sitcom that follows the writers, actors, producers, etc. of a fictional Saturday Night Live-like sketch comedy show called the Girlie Show. One of the actors in this fictional show is Tracy Jordan, who is portrayed by the real-life actor Tracy Morgan. This bit is a meta joke about how the character is going crazy and realizing that he is just a character on a show.

Stargate SG-1 S9E6 "Beachhead"

Meanwhile, I render an AVIF animation and say

animation of Sam saying "Look at how small it is!"

(JPEG still image, in case that AVIF doesn't display properly for you)

Stargate SG-1 S1E1 "Children of the Gods"

The main benefit of GIF, as a format, is simply the fact that it is supported basically everywhere. The main downside is that the file size is enormous while generally having a poor picture quality. Yes, it is possible to put a lot of time and effort into optimizing a particular animation to make for a GIF that has a passable picture quality at a decent file size. But for any amount of time that I might put into optimizing a GIF, if I were to put that same amount of time into optimizing it as an AVIF, it would be an even better quality and even smaller file size.

While I would love to move to using a modern image format such as AVIF, JPEG XL, or WebP for my animations, they simply are not supported in as many places as GIF. While the files tend to play back fine for me, if I try to upload a WebP or AVIF animation to my instance, it just uploads as a still photo. The instance even just rejects JPEG XL uploads outright. In most apps/programs, GIF thumbnails tend to display animated, but oftentimes, other animated file formats just display their thumbnails as still images. I also wouldn't be surprised if the AVIF animation that is embedded up there doesn't even display properly for you (which certainty isn't helped by the fact that I used Catbox, which doesn't work for many people with literally any file type, but that is an entirely different matter).

At the moment, WebP seems to be the best middle ground between widespread (albeit imperfect) support, high quality, and low file size. But at the end of the day, that standard is primarily backed by Google, so I really want JPEG XL support to grow. For the time being, I have found that when I post cruddy GIFs, my posts tend to do better than when I post animated WebPs, which I take to mean they reach more users that way. So I will prioritize GIF, for now.

A brilliant scene between Carter (Amanda Tapping) and O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson). Amanda originally wanted to sing the MacGyver theme tune, but couldn't...

Stargate SG-1 S10E8 "Memento Mori"

This is a joke about how there are a lot of actors who portray characters in both Stargate SG-1 and the X-Files (just like basically every other sci-fi show filmed in Canada). Carter, Hammond, Dr. Lee, etc. I found out recently that IMDb has a neat advanced search function that allows you to compare two shows to quickly see which actors appear in both: https://www.imdb.com/search/name/?roles=tt0106179,tt0118480

The actual dialog in that scene:

Sal, what am I doing? Working here, sleeping out the back, watching reruns of the X-Files in my spare time. I appreciate everything you've done for me, but… I've gotta tell you, I've been thinking about leaving.

Bonus: A remastered version of an old meme that is another Vala meta crossover

Stargate Atlantis S2E16 "The Long Goodbye"

I employed a little bit of creative license here in order to make this work better as a 4-panel "comic" with the knowing glances of the ridiculously attractive people as the punchline. Full original dialog:

RONON: So people just sit and watch this box for hours at a time?
JOHN: Yeah, people do.
TEYLA: Is it that engaging?
JOHN: Depends what's on it. There are lots of programs on dozens of channels, every day, all day.
RODNEY: Most of which are fictional representations of ridiculously attractive people in absurd situations.
JOHN: There are educational programs, all sorts of documentaries. Not many people watch 'em but, uh, well, they're on.
RONON: And that's what everybody on your planet does for entertainment? Watch a box?

Panel 1: Ronon saying "So, people just sit and watch this box for hours at a time?" Panel 2: John saying "Depends what's on it. There are lots of programs on dozens of channels, every day, all day." Panel 3: Rodney saying "Most of which are fictional representations of ridiculously attractive people in absurd situations." Panel 4: Teyla/Ronon looking at each other.

ChickenGate-1, If you need to feed the chickens, might as well have fun with it.

I dont have hope this will last more than a few months. The dirt and seeds are rough on the moving parts. I have fun building them though.

Stargate SG-1 S7E1 "Fallen"

Daniel gets kicked out of ascension land and is lying in the middle of a field or something. Just before a group of villagers stumble across his naked human body, the eldest one is telling parables:

SHAMDA: The new animal took a look around and immediately went and chose a place next to the laziest, greediest beast in the stable. When the master saw this, he put a yoke on him at once and took him back to the merchant.
KHORDIB: We've heard this one already.
SHAMDA: Has it lost its meaning?
KHORDIB: I mean you told it just now, on the way down to the waterhole.

Stargate SG-1 S10E20 "Unending"

While the team is stuck in a time bubble, Cameron starts going a bit senile:

CAMERON: When I said that I wanted to get the team back together, work with you guys, learn from you… I did not mean every waking moment for the next fifty years.
DANIEL: You said that yesterday.
CAMERON: I did?
TEAL'C: And the day before.
VALA: And the day before that.
CAMERON: Oh, sorry. I'll just... shut up now.
