That's only on me. I've enjoyed putting emojis in READMEs and commit messages since I've been programming in 2009, even in with yahoo and MSN messages before that. It was the tech fad at the time and I just never grew out of it, nor making my graphics overly colorful. I relish that LLMs mimic that trend from their training data, like some kind of lingering graffiti or watermark we imparted on the corpus of AI data sets.

Hey folks, for about 10 months or so been working on a hobby project just to get more practice in Linux application packaging, the Rust ecosystem/utilities, and software development on Nix and NixOS (as well as solve some personal pain points in using a HDMI TVs and projectors with PCs).

I'm posting here as while the project isn't still fully stable, it's daily drivable and fully documented, and I feel other Nix users aren't too shy of beta software. While the pedantic app code may not be much to write home about, I'd be curious here on feedback of my nix packing approach, use of flakes for development and distribution, dev shell setup, and systemd services & permissions.

The app itself follows more of a distributed pub/sub architecture (my background is in robotics and cyber-physical system design, not desktop software), so converging on IPC and middle-ware libraries I've been meaning to experiment while keeping the installable setup self contained was a balance.

I've also adopted Cachix into the release pipeline (sparing my poor laptop and RPi from building the arm binaries with every release), but would be interested in finding other (Rust?) projects making use of Nix in CI for development to learn from, as that remains a large gap in GitHub Actions setup that is still imperatively Ubuntu based.

Links to the rendered docs and source repo (NixOS install instruction included if you'd like to try it).

    Cheers

Python being an interpreted language may be one of the worst case scenarios there. Whenever I try using python from either a docker container of a foreign CPU architecture using qemu, or even a proot on Android , it's dog slow as well.

Yeah, would definitely prefer using a package manager from a maintained repository like nix over raw dogging remote shell scripts. E.g. from nixpkg

    nix-env -iA secretspec -f https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/tarball/nixpkgs-unstable

Wireless ear buds come to mind. Plus the charging case, that could be three separate batteries per headset audio device. I don't like the idea of wireless earbuds personally, but they are admittedly prevalent in the consumer market. The thumbnail should have depicted those.

Moving nixpkgs development from GitHub would be ambitious, as that repo already pushes their infrastructure limits with enterprise level support.

I suspect the Nix org would need to garner many more sponsors to fund the hosting expenditures for an equivalent forge with matching CI/CD, PR automation, and geo redundancy. Would be nice to see.

Wow, hello fellow Rose alum! Class of 2013 here, so don't I remember if IT was advertising an Eduroam SSID back then, but the standard issued corporate HP laptops had decent Linux support, or at least someone in the class cohort would find and disseminate a workaround by the time the next LTS kennel rolled around.

Definitely agree on seeking out a local LUG on campus. As originally an EE while at RHIT, I didn't know about LUGs until I continued on to grad school for CS at GT, which had a very active LUG with invited guest speakers and even senior student led lectures.

Looks like the hosting for lugatgt.org is now down, hope they're still going, or perhaps merged with ALE of Atlanta.

I never want to go back to an OS I can't diff or track under revision control. I just love being able to solve an issue once and move on without worrying about if I'll forget all the minutiae of changes I made to my customized system when it eventually comes to migrating workstations or replicating across my computers.
