Unfortunately, people care more about keeping Beloved Franchises™ alive than keeping good teams together. Even though EA already proved that Mass Effect and Dragon Age would never be the Mass Effect and Dragon Age people liked again.
Nah, it was made to play videogames. It doesn't have a couch-first experience for media like Youtube or Jellyfin/Plex or insert paid streaming service here.
You can install clients for that stuff as non-steam games or deal with the clunkiness of navigating a web browser (also installed as a non-steam game), but it'll be miles behind an Android/Apple TV box or even something like a PS5 with media apps installed when it comes to UX.
If you're only looking for Jellyfin/Plex, doing the install process for the flatpak once to add it as a "game" should be good enough to match up to a console or TVOS. If you're looking for stuff like Youtube or Twitch or god forbid Netflix, using a browser with a remote/controller is way behind the experience of a dedicated app. Especially since SmartTube is the way you should be watching youtube in the living room and that's an Android app.
Shares get a bump when there's a release date trailer. They don't get too much of a dip when there's a delay announced.
Hilariously, one of the parts of Mass Effect that hasn't aged super well is a running joke across all three games where you (a decorated military figure) can punch out a news reporter for trying to make you look bad on the news. To the point where if you do it in 1 and 2, she dodges in 3 but you can react to a prompt to headbutt her and walk away with her slumped against a wall.
The paragon options for dealing with her include responding to her goading question about military losses caused by your decision by being a good brave little soldier and listing the names of the ships lost in the action.
Romancing Shadowheart was difficult
Unless you played during launch... Month? Basically any friendship threshold above "hates your guts" (which is easy to achieve because she "Approves" of a lot of no-brainer "good default" options) had Shart wanting to bone you at the earliest possible romance opportunity. I think Gale similarly got patched to be less eager.
That's pretty meta.
Well exactly. The VC projects get to accelerate their "right now" factor with money. Money that doesn't need to make a return on investment for another x years. That means, before those products start their hostile monetization campaigns, they will be unequivocally the best in their field by any metric other than "libre as in freedom".
Look at Twitter. Did people that jumped ship jump to the relatively mature but "fiddly" federated platforms, or did they jump to "it's literally Twitter but without ads and grok" in Bluesky?
We're on Lemmy, so we're obviously in a group more willing to tolerate "it's an open protocol with some weirdness but that's better than being on one corporation's server beholden to their rules and TOS".
Anyone switching from Plex to Emby in 2026 instead of to Jellyfin chose Emby for a reason. For them, Emby is a "better" product and "still free" the way Plex was free for all meaningful features (hardware acceleration, remote streaming...) in 2018. Maybe it'll never happen, maybe it'll take until 2030, who knows, but Emby is in the exact same state that Plex was before Plex closed the source and started rent-seeking.
Ship does make significant use of generative AI.
The main reason is that if you switch from Plex to Emby you're going from paid licenseware (fully enshittified) to paid licenseware (not fully enshittified yet). It's like when everyone finally dropped Skype and moved to... Discord. Which hey it's closed source and owned by venture capital, but it doesn't suck yet!!! And now in 2026, Discord is what Discord is.
A lot, which is why I don't play any games from the following categories:
-
Live-service forever games with cash shops
-
Server-based games that become unplayable when the servers die
-
anything with Denuvo
-
anything that can't be played without an account
-
any console game where the console has not had its DRM compromised (Switch 1 yes, Switch 2 no)
-
any Steam game with DRM more secure than the screen-door Steamworks
What is completely unimportant to me is reselling my games. I don't really care if I "own" them ideologically or legally, I care about using them how I wish, when I wish, without barriers like "an account in good standing with a company that exists and operates its servers" in the way. DRM that gets removed is functionally the same as DRM-free software for my personal "ownership" requirements, though it is nice when there isn't anything to remove in the first place.
GTA-specific work can't start until the emu devs have GTA to work with. In the long run, emulating a game that's getting a native PC release is not going to be an important part of emulating PS5 as a platform. In the short run, the emulator won't have GTA before Rockstar releases its native PC release, this idea of "lol pirate the ps5 game to punish rockstar for delaying the PC game" is juvenile fantasy.
Backports work because the 13.4 firmware (or whatever wolverine needs) has been exploited. The encryption keys that are part of 13.4 have been dumped and extracted using that exploit, so now you can tell your 4.0 ps5 to tell Wolverine to "decrypt the game with this key" and it'll do it. If GTA needs 14.0 keys, you won't be able to do that until someone cracks 14.0 and dumps the key. You could give GTA the v13.4 keys just like Wolverine, but GTA doesn't decrypt with 13.4 keys.
Similarly, pirates can create decrypted dumps of games (I don't know about ps5 but definitely on other consoles) by passing the key through during the dump process. That still requires having the key though, and getting the key means exploiting the firmware that distributes that key.
