I'm a beginner so take this with a massive grain of salt.

To that end: how do I start?

Look for beginner guides on YouTube. They tell you what needles and yarn to buy, and what stitches to learn first.

I was advised to skip the oversized needles that many videos recommend for the first project.

Learn how to knit in the continental style from the beginning. Watch a few videos on the topic because people hold the tension differently. I tried a few techniques before I found one that felt natural instead of messing me up constantly.

When learning your first stitches, it's better to be too loose than too tight.

I don't want to make a massive investment in case I don't stick with the hobby

You'll be practicing just how to knit and purl for a while, so you just need a pair of straight needles and a ball of yarn, that's like 10-20$ at most, possibly less.

One thing: is it possible to knit machine washable wear?

In my country it's significantly harder to buy natural wool, so I'm guessing you'll have an easy time finding synthetic or superwash wool yarn.

For example, "Native Americans" did not "infest" the United States. White people did.

Do you imagine the various indigenous populations of Americas popped out of the ground like mushrooms? They're pretty far from their "natural habitat" in the plains of sub-saharan Africa... Or is that too far back in history and their "natural habitat" is in Siberia and Polynesia?

I know people who've driven drunk for more than a decade, and only crashed when they were sober. Does that mean drinking and driving is safe?

I literally had one of my devices fail to boot after an update pretty much every month, and another a few times a year. Sure, I was able to fix it with only arch-chroot, but when I switched to btrfs I didn't need to carry around a flash drive with me when updating the system...

The last few years I'm on nixos, and while it sometimes fails to update, it has not once failed to boot.

It doesn't sort them in the programming sense, it's just moving files to another directory based on the filename

    qsort -w /home/user/Documents -t ext --df .txt

    is equivalent to

    ls *.txt | xargs -I {} mv {} /home/user/Documents
