The limitation/rarity ended up being pretty special, so it worked out better this way in my opinion.
Yellow and red alerts where a much more natural ways to heighten the tension.
Saucer separations were truly an "Oh shit!" moment when they had to resort to such measures.

Becoming emotionally dependent on someone you pay for intimacy is an extremely precarious thing, not just for the client but also the seller.
Please do not give yourself or them the risk of being tempted by that.
Go to a community center instead, volunteer at an animal center, go to a soup kitchen, donate some clothes at a shelter.
All these places can give you a sense of belonging if you are seeking a genuine connection, don't worry about being desperate, as long as you respect peoples boundaries it will get better with time.

I never really got the argument against augments (in universe as well as from the writers).
All the humanoids in Star Trek are the result of genetic augmentation anyway.
The whole "eugenic wars" thing always felt like a cop-out because the writers were to afraid to tackle a controversial topic during the actual show and pushed it into the past in a "we already had this discussion" kind of way.
