I think there are some similarities, but also some differences.

Lemmy will probably eventually attract the normies of which you speak. And that's not a bad thing. Bad things happen when low quality content and ad farming are prioritized. The nature of sharing culture, information, and entertainment will always attract new audience.

Because communities here aren't being monetized by corporate ownership, and because you can selectively add or block instances that don't meet community standards, I don't think Lemmy will fall prey to the same enshitifcation that slowly ruined reddit.

  • When the rubberized coating degrades off of something like a mouse, I'll use a scouring pad and alcohol to remove the rest of it. It usually leaves it a standard plastic finish. The material is breaking down, and will continue to do so, so I just remove it.

  • Unlike traditional digital streaming platforms, the new Winamp Player will not be limited to music streaming. It will seamlessly combine premium streaming with users' local music libraries, internet radio stations, podcasts, personal cloud-based collections and other audio sources, while introducing a highly customizable interface, new social capabilities and innovative ways to discover, organize and enjoy music.

It sounds like the local playback is the "optional" feature. That's still gonna be a no, at least for me. Fpr Hifi, I'll stick with FooBar2k, or something that is a proper hi-res FLAC player first and has bolt-ons/plugins second. The same article also links to another, they actually already released a new build of classic winamp a few years ago.

It's coming back with a monthly subscription.

It's dead already, then. WinAmp's heritage was providing a free audio player. I was looking forward to a refreshed build to test out, but I won't pay for it.

There are a dozen better, free, maintained, and actively developed players out there. This is less than too little, and far too late. Those of us who used winamp back when it was still activly developed will continue to have nostalgia for it, but I bet it will be DOA to most of the target audience.

I've only kept up on news for it because I was hoping it would be reborn true to itself. I have zero interest in it as a subscription model.
