    I don't want to sound like a dick as not every artist here need to be told about that.

    But have you thought about making your webcomic ad/watermark free?

    I am asking because I like your comics, but I hate watermarked comics. Watermarks assume the reader is guilty by default and that they won't mention the source.

    Anyway, I hope you consider it.

    You do sound like a dick whether you mean it or not.

    Use a search engine and look up what a watermark is. It's text that's spread all over the image, making it impossible to use/share without removing it, thus making the removal of attribution impossible. I add a signature to my comics, not a watermark. It's small and, as you just proved by doing it, very easy to remove if you think a discreet attribution is the same as an advertisement.

    The goal of signing the comic is not to make anyone "feel guilty" if they remove the signature (it happens often anyway so many people clearly don't care), it's to allow people who see this comic and want to see more by the same artist to visit the website where they can find more. On the website, there are no ads, no products being sold, it's purely there to share content with others who are looking for it.

    Piss off and go bother people who care about your shitty trolling attempts instead, I'm not falling for your low tier bait (if you're not trolling then you're just being a gigantic asshole on purpose and that's not any better).

    It's not a bot, it's a person who purposefully removes attribution from content they share on Lemmy. It's their entire personality.

    Their logic makes no sense (other than being an asshole), so their attempts to justify it make no sense either. Don't overthink it.

    Beep thinks everyone should go out of their way to post a link to the source when they post a comic. Beep thinks if a person doesn't post a link, they're guilty. Beep wants artists to not sign their work, and instead trust users to link to the source when they post a comic.

    I might have the most subtle and easy to remove signature of everyone who shares content here, yet you still find a way to complain. Your crusade is childish and you deserve to be piled on by everyone who can't wait for mods to come back and shut you up for good.

    You know what explicitly makes you a humongously vile and despicable jackass? Not respecting artists' own wishes in regard to how you treat their art. You apparently, according to your not-in-any-way-trustworthy words, follow the artist's output on the web. But you explicitly declare that the artist doesn't have a say in how their art is distributed, overriding that with your own enormously asshole-ly, obnoxious, inconsiderate and contemptible attitude toward their effort, which latter you consume as a worthless leech upon their inestimable generosity, with you being a vermin parasite upon their creative output that you could never dream of achieving even if you lived a thousand years. Apparently it bugs you so much that you're completely devoid of any remote hint of creativity, that you're incredibly eager to steal other people's artwork and pronounce it everyone's and no one's achievement, such that you can claim it for yourself just for the brief second when it's posted. I can only vaguely imagine the microscopic penis that you have to grasp around for, every morning, that could make you so irreparably angry upon the world that you proclaimed war on people who never had any hint of your very existence before your childish behavior in this community.

    By your definition Picasso “watermarked” his paintings, and so does every artist.

    Signing your work has been tradition for centuries, if not longer, and is a right earned by the author of any work. The fact that online content uses links instead of signatures is a reasonable modernisation of an ancient right.

    Do you rage when the credits roll on a movie? When the artist’s name is written on an album? When people call it “ Michelangelo's David”?

    I'll answer this sincerely, since you might really be either naive in your comprehension, or traumatized by some severe butthurt and attempting this as a protest performance.

    Memes, as present on the web, are their own art form, born out of postmodernism. Specifically they are low-effort in their vast majority, and predominantly built on existing artwork. The person posting a new meme typically only adds new meaning to it, usually in text form — rather than artwork as such. This is why screenshots from Twitter circulate on par with image memes, and quantity prevails over quality in memes. I do appreciate crediting a zinger post such as those by Ken M, but if I'm making a meme I'm not gonna expect its provenance to be meticulously traced, and in almost all cases it's not important.

    Memes are in fact a modern incarnation of folk art and folklore, which are largely anonymous.

    Comics are a traditional art form, wherein the artist produces the art as part of the message, together with that explicitly delivered in the text. As such, the artist's identity is also integral to the art itself, since a) the artist usually produces art continuously and imparts their view in it (and the reader might want to discover more of it), and b) the identity may be deliberately built to work as part of the art, true to ‘The medium is the message’. (See e.g. Laibach, Andy Kaufman, Salvador Dalí, Petr Pavlensky, or any number of counterculture artists like Hunter Thompson and William S. Burroughs, for examples in other disciplines.)

    If you want your memes to be treated as art where the identity is important (like Ken M's), you need to put effort into it that goes above typical meme activity. And by the way, if you think that comics art doesn't take effort, you're gravely mistaken: it takes lots of practice to produce any art consistently. It's the same situation as with Ralph Steadman's art: looks careless, but in fact shows many years of experience.

    Also, I'm pretty sure this distinction was already explored in postmodern art, e.g. by artists modifying someone else's artwork and putting their signature on it. That didn't change things, and you aren't gonna convince anyone either.

    Im curious why you hate watermarks so much? Gaining recognition as an artist by stamping a work as your own is very different than gazillion $ company paying to interrupt your content stream with brainwashing propaganda. 

    Either this is a very not-thought through opinion or it is a just another attempt to provide more content with attributions removed to train GenAI LLMs.
