I love the Fediverse. I love Peertube. Our strength is we're decentralized. Our weakness is we're decentralized. How do we find like instances and things WITHOUT an algorithm?

Well I run tubefree.org. I know Makertube.net is a good instance. I follow that instance. However, I trust the admins there, why not follow who they follow? Thus we have a chain of trust.

How do I do this easily though? I came up with a script: https://git.btfree.org/BTFree/PTIndex

Want to USE the index on YOUR Peertube so you follow everyone I follow, and follow those I trust and who they follow? Go to your Peertube - Settings - General - Federation - Check "Automatically follow platforms of a public index" - Index URL: https://ptindex.btfree.org .

Want to be involved in the chain of trust? Message me! I'm here @ozoned@piefed.social , @ozoned:matrix.org , ozoned.01 on Signal, @ozoned@btfree.social on Fedi, ozoned@btfree.org via email.

Pretty nice, but since my instance follows everything from instances.joinpeertube.org automatically, I can't recommend that anyone "trust" my instance.

PeerTube's biggest weakness is not decentralization, but fragmentation imho.

    What's your instance?

I used to follow the main one, but learn quickly that if I wanted a public instance, that'd get me into a lot of trouble. There's a LOT of awful out there.

PeerTube.wtf. I haven't come across things that were awful. Only some porn. I have blocked 11 instances in the last year.

So!! I went from 60 instances to over 900 in the span of less than 24 hours! Also most of the content is pretty good. So thats nice.

Awesome! Let me know if there's any quality servers you think I should be pulling in. What's your server?

Also please don't hesitate to let me know if you find any unsavory things. While I can remove it from the index, you'd have to manually remove it from your server.

    Piped.chrisco.me

I removed a couple. Mostly porn. I dont really need that for the family. But that was 2 servers out of hundreds.

    https://piped.chrisco.me

    to the list

So im not seeing the option for "Automatically follow platforms of a public index" after federation.

    image

    I believe(?) I found it under Settings->Configuration->Basic:

Automatically follow instances of a public index
⚠️ This functionality requires a lot of attention and extra moderation.
See the documentation for more information about the expected URL

Im going to replace the main https://instances.joinpeertube.org with your index and see what happens.

Yup that's the one! The default one Peertube basically says anyone can join that. I'm paying attention and doing the moderation for the PTIndex so if anyone has issues with it, let me know! :)

As someone whose instance is already on your list, I greatly support this! Everyone should definitely use this list, and that's an unbiased opinion.

Awesome! Which server is yours? We all need to get together as Peertube Adkins and figure out more things we can do to help the ecosystem! :-)

Is it possible to somehow integrate Fediseer into this?

So kinda like an algorithm but open. Can't check yours in depth now, but having done local algorithms before, it's great for transparency and predictability, so congrats on the idea. 👌

Also from what I could skim on the code, I didn't notice anything on the sort, so I wonder if there's weights for this chain of trust in the code, like someone followed both by someone I follow and someone I blocked (iirc Peertube allows blocking? Pls correct me if I'm wrong) would be less relevant to the script.

A personal opinion. How do we normal purchase our goods, or go see a movie, or listen to a song? PEOPLE. We have community to help give us suggestions. We outsource our opinions to a community of like minded individuals right? And I'll get it wrong, or it won't be for you, but the script is out there. Start building your own!

Ooooooo ... weights ... I hadn't thought of that. That sounds like a GREAT idea. I added an issues to address this maybe in the future. https://git.btfree.org/BTFree/PTIndex/issues/2

Didn't mean the first part as something negative. Being usually the one that in my social circles that knows the nicher stuff, algorithms help me a bunch to find new things as asking around can be a quest.

And for clarity, to me the algorithms would be a type of middleman, whose job is to better distribute the nicher stuff, and thus why I interpreted your script as one (sorry if I got it wrong though).

But also, if I'm misinterpreting, feel free to ignore the weight idea if it leads the script to the wrong direction, as the idea is based on my definition of algorithm from above.

    edit: engrish
