I’m not going to watch the State of the Union address on Tuesday night. I urge you not to, either.

I hope Nielsen (or whoever makes such estimates these days) will find that far fewer Americans watched Donald Trump’s State of the Union than have watched any other State of the Union in recent memory. It will drive Trump crazy.

But there are plenty of reasons for not watching other than driving Trump crazy.

First, he doesn’t deserve our attention. He’s abused and defiled the American presidency, even worse than he did in his first term.

He’s blatantly usurped the powers of Congress. He has overtly used the justice department to seek to punish people he considers his enemies and pardon people loyal to him. He has willfully rejected the rule of law, broken treaties, literally destroyed part of the White House, thumbed his nose at our allies (including our closest and heretofore loyal neighbors), and utterly failed his constitutional duty to take care that the laws are faithfully executed.

He lies like most people breathe. He’s a fraud and a traitor.

News outlets should watch. It's their job so that's fine.

Everyone else should find something far more interesting to do instead and avoid the big whining baby. We can catch the lowlights later.

He's only going to lie and lie anyway. What's the point of watching that?

It’s 3am where I live. I wasn’t planning on listening to a demented pedofiles rambling in the middle of the night.

I'd already planned on skipping this and looking at Colbert's excerpts on his show. It wouldn't be the same anyway without Speaker Nancy Pelosi golf clapping at his gibbering. And ripping up the written copy as a chef's kiss.

For those of us not versed in the Divided States... whatever it is, what does the state of the union usually do/entail?

It's a speech that the President gives to a joint session of Congress, so Senators and Representatives are all in the chamber together.

The Constitution mandates that the President gives Congress an update on the State of the Union "from time to time", and over the years that has evolved into a speech given around this time of year, every year except the first year of a President's term. It is also viewed as an opportunity for the President to advocate for legislation he favors.

Why bother? It's just going to be his ugly fucking face blathering on with easily debunked lie after lie after lie. I get enough of that every day already. I'm not going to willingly subject myself to his senile smoothbrain musings on windmills and catapults and trans people and God knows what else he's incapable of understanding.
