Seeing the world do … nothing with Venezuela is concerning

Setting aside the very real threat of military action from the United States in the short term, Canada also needs to prepare for the reality that they can no longer depend on the US for strategic defense in the long term either. If their national defense strategy depends on the American voters never electing a person like Trump again, they are in for some really unpleasant surprises.

That has been fairly obvious for the past 11 months.

What's interesting to me is that Canadian MSM is now saying this out loud.

Fight, flight, or freeze. How would you respond? How will you prepare for one of those three?

That's crazy indeed. I think it's a positive development in some regards.

Is it? So far all I've seen from these US threats is our government use them to pass bills that increase and quicken resource extraction, bypassing environmental protections and alike.

5% increase in military spending with no new tax increases, just reductions in civil service sizes.

They're basically using this to frighten us into giving our oligarchs everything they've wanted.

Yeah, that's a major downside. That said, the threat is real. Probably more an economic one than military, but nevertheless they are capable of forcing us to give them our resources to extract and exploit our labour to line their oligarchs' pockets. So I think it's good to acknowledge the threat but we need to respond with strengthening our economy, production capacity, self-reliance, and most of all - our social cohesion via getting more of what we produce into the hands of the workers that produce it. Chances are our government won't be going in that direction since it's not profitable for their largest donors, but we have to work to force them to.

E: When I say stronger economy I don't mean what Carney's doing, trampling the environment and people to line oligarchic pockets. I mean an economy that benefits working people much more than what we have now. Directly via higher wages, indirectly by producing more domestic goods, providing quality universal care and so on.

    How about this?

    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/editorials/article-sunday-editorial-venezuela-warning-for-canada/

The motivation is simple, and ancient: empire. Saturday marked the formal debut of an imperial America, led by a president who recognizes no law, save that of the jungle. Already, Mr. Trump is turning his attention elsewhere, saying in an interview Saturday that “something’s going to have to be done with Mexico.”

Every country in the Western Hemisphere should be worried, particularly this country, which Mr. Trump so obviously covets as a 51st state.

The phrasing isn’t as alarming but the sentiment is the same.

Besides continued diplomacy with potential allies who maybe won't just sign angry letters and sternly wag their fingers at a camera if/when we get invaded...

What else can we do with a tiny population and a dwarfed by our enemies military budget?

    Nukes, anyone?

I'd like to hear some suggestions beyond "maybe we should do...something...idk what."

I mean besides sabotage after the fact, that's a given and I'm read up.

Yay, let's waste more billions on the CAF and drain social programs so we can become like the US while avoiding becoming the US.

The problem with these right wing rags is that they never state what they mean, nor explain how to fund it. What they mean is spend hundreds of billions on war toys made abroad from tax revenues and cuts from all other programs. These assholes never suggest a military tax.

Canada needs to offer asylum and military jobs to US citizens who want to fight this fascism.

No I don’t want any more yanks poisoning Canada. When Kent State and Vietnam happened, dissenters came up here. No problems in the US were solved and we are where we are today. Americans need to deal with their self-made problem. Not constantly run away.

Trump is exactly stupid enough to think kidnapping Carney would have the same effect as it did on Venuzuela, because he's too ignorant to know that that's not how parliamentary democracies work.

That being said, I would hope that there is a kind of dead-man-switch that will automatically trigger to dump all of our US Debt that we own into the market all at once and do some damage to their economy. Not to mention cutting off their power and closing the borders.

Unfortunately, yes. The best way to dissuade them from trying is to act as if they will. Still, military spending ranks low on people's priority list. At least Carney takes it more seriously than his predecessor did.

No amount of realistic military spending by Canada would help this situation.

Sure it will. We have to be a less appealing target than someone else. No one is saying we can go toe to toe with the US.

Best we can hope for is for them to pick a softer target and make a drawn out insurgency inevitable.

Money spent on soldiers, bases, equipment, etc. would be absolutely useless when the US Military simply double tap every single military base in the country in the first 10 minutes. There are only 27 across Canada. Even if we added 100 new bases to spread things out they could easily do the same thing still. We are far too close, and the military capability difference is absurdly ridiculous.

The two possible things I could think of that would realistically make the US think twice, a) handing out guns and training to civilians en masse and b) a PR campaign to the US population (and military) that may lead to a refusal to invade by the troops.

I'm pretty sure A isn't going to happen.

lol. That’s just silly. You don’t fight the US with weapons. You bleed their money dry. They come into Canada and you knock out power and infrastructure here that they need to rebuild at great expense if they want to hang around and get anything of value.

Sure it will suck to live here like that but sucks even more and weakens invaders who would also be fighting a battle at home.

    What battle at home?

Look at russia, USA opposition resembles russian opposition more and more every day.

You ruin your own infrastructure -> more of your people will die and they would just shrug. Why do you think they would be investing in your country, that's just silly.

Why do you think they’d spend the time and money coming here? Resources? You make it painfully expensive and time consuming to get anything of value until he’s overthrown at home.

It’s how every other country has beat the US time and again after WWII. They haven’t won a single long term battle since.

Pre-preparing... don't buy US weapons with kill switches (F35). Stop the idiocy of Canada's military strategy/needs as continuing to act as force amplification for US evil/ambitions.

By far the most important diplomatic/military posture change must be re-evaluating Russophobia. Russia's narratives are far closer to reality than our propaganda, and our propaganda only exists to defraud us, not convince Russians that our values "are love towards them". More important that the demonic morality of agreeing with every US warmongering propaganda in history, pretending that anti-Russia/China propaganda matters more than our defense divides us with the world. It's that division that makes it easy for US to "settle for Americas" and give up the rest.

Preparing, together with Europe, means unity with Russia and China. Simply dropping the antagonism towards them goes a long way. It is a complete joke to try to bog Russia down in Ukraine, because, as always, they need to do the heavy lifting in protecting the world from the US.

Why are Russia bogged down in Ukraine again?

Oh, yeah, because they invaded a neighbouring country.

How is embracing Russia the answer to the US potentially invading a neighbouring country?

Russia is showing just as embarassing cowardice vs US as Canada is. One explanation for not sinking US Carribean fleet, or destroying US bases in UK is that they are receiving other concessions from US. It's quite possible for Canada and Europe to be on the menu while 3 powers are at dinner table. Canada's devotion to be on the US's plate destroys any option to escape being eaten. US colonies switching alliance towards neutrality towards Russia instead of US subservience is only path to stopping the US, because it is the only path to counterbalance in western hemisphere.

Our truly demonic warmongering lies support for war on Russia is suicidal. Ukraine is a 100% US puppeted Ukraine war provocation, and the people who tell you otherwise, hate you and march you to your death. OP suggests the absurdity of a coalition of the cowardly food. When it has been so easy to divide the cowards into individual stronger submission to the US.

Step 1 for a coalition of the cowards is ending agreement for US demonic lies, and validating all of their objectives, even when their means means we get eaten next. You have to revise and challenge the demonic lies themselves, instead of pretending we have superior values that justify a liberal supremacism that is indistinguishable from nazi supremacism operationally.
