If I was governor I'd do it anyway. EOs are not decrees

Just scream "states rights" and ignore the fed. Works for fascism.

This isn't even a state's rights issue. Executive orders are just memos for the federal executive branch, not laws or decrees or anything that has any weight beyond 'this is how we will enforce the laws already passed'.

The states should just say 'that isn't how executive orders work' instead of pretending that there is some federal vs state issue.

    But... "states' rights!"

I keep waiting for Republicans to revolt, but then I remember they're Republicans.

Isn't it just a bit suspicious that the industry is preemptively asking for deregulation? It's like they know they're going to do some shady shit and want to make sure no pesky laws get in the way.

Everything about the llm industry is suspicious and predatory. They're doing something that is not only unpopular, it's not just going to put people out of work. People are doing to die. And not in the vague economic sense of "40k extra deaths per point drop in the stock market" sense. I mean in the direct "AI directly caused these deaths and there's no other way to look at it" sense. I'm not sure how, when, or why. But I am sure that the people pushing LLMs the way they are do. And they're trying to establish a legal protection for when that happens.

Listen. I know. I know how it sounds.

I promise I'm not chronically online. LLMs are the most current end result of a predatory VC industry that has not let ethics slow it down in the past. Why would ethics slow them down now?

Were NFTs going to kill people too? 🙄

I don't think the OP is saying we'll have LLM Terminators walking around saying, "I will be back!" while mowing down people.

But deaths attributed to LLMs have already started:

Sure, this seems to be just playing on existing mentally ill people, so let's ignore them for now.

What about "AI" pointing the gun and having someone else pull the trigger?

What happens when a trigger happy cop gets a dangerous sounding alert and decides to go in guns blazing?

I don't believe for a minute that the military isn't looking at weaponizing this detection by also having AI "decide" if it should attack.

Then there's the AI in robo taxis - surely those are 100% accurate. Well they had better be - car deaths are the the highest cause of accidental deaths in the US.

I could go on about how AI hallucinating in medical notes taken by copilot could lead to improper prescriptions, or how AI hallucinating could do things like tell people to put glue on pizza.

I mean, I guess some outcomes are just injury not death so...

Remember, this is what they are doing publicly, right out in the open.

We have a black budget system where rule of law doesn't matter... AI is already killing people, controlling warbots, and more. If we are very, very lucky, we'll know the "truth" in 50 years or so.

Do you know what the CIA did after FOIA became a problem? They burned the vast majority of records, with the tidbits they "missed" being truly horrifying. I personally think it was a message, the message being "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here".

When the law no longer pretends to serve the people, it loses a big part of it's social power.

Many people in power today don't seem to really understand the nature of power.

So that title is technically false. Executive Orders apply to the operation of the federal government only, Trump has not blocked anything.

Trump signed an order which claims to be blocking. Trump attempted blocking.

Conservatives have always been fine with federal government taking away other states rights.

The civil war started because the South didn't want the federal government to force them to stop using slaves but 100% okay with the federal government forcing Northern states to return slaves back to the South.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this effectively toothless? Like executive orders only effect things directly under federal and more specifically executive purview meaning even a city government could pass a regulation on AI in their area and it'd have more legal weight than an executive order. Or are they abusing unrelated powers to declare that no one can regulate AI?

Like I'm pretty sure the supremacy clause doesn't apply to executive orders.

So are they saying AI is a national security threat? Or that living without AI is a national security threat, in which one would imagine AI should be provided free access by the federal government to every person, as it is a threat to not have access? As an executive order is designed to be used only for an issue of national security, which we must have been living in such a threat since the country was founded until now.

Ya even with our conservative court they even can’t ignore the power states have in enforcing their own laws outside of what the constitution specifically says the federal controls. I guess that assumes if any of them even care about the constitution anymore.

"Let's push something that destroys the ecology and economy! We'll call it "AI"! People everywhere will be jobless and suffering except for us!". The world, with usa as a superpower, is very badly broken. Maybe it's time to drop off the usa at the old folks home.

So the US is at the stage where whatever this orange jerkoff farts out of his decrepit dementia-riddled mind - becomes law? And aligned states will listen to this pap, non-aligned states will Ignore? Cause ruling by EOs like isn’t a thing

  • source
  • [–] 13 points 11 months ago

This is almost certainly because this very thin economy, or at least the stock market, is only barely staying afloat on the back of the AI bubble. This move could create room for them to superficially extend the bubble as long as possible and maximize their profits.

In a normal world, I'd expect this to get smacked down hard in the courts. But, we can pretty much count on Thomas, Alito and Gorsch being on board with Trump as an overt dictator. So, it just becomes a question about how much leverage the Trump administration has on Kavanaugh, Barret and Roberts. It's pretty sad that we're counting on three compromised people to protect the rule of law.

The order could have far-reaching effects on US efforts to dominate the nascent technology, which has already become a significant part of the economy and the stock market but which also still remains untested in many ways.

Fucking HOW, CNN? It doesn't just not have far reaching effects, it has zero effect.

I feel like I'm being gaslit by news organizations deciding an executive order has relevancy to state laws. They don't even pretend that there's some novel legal theory that could maybe allow it, they just write the whole article like it's a royal decree and self obviously impactful.

The law is backed by the glorious leader being unhinged enough to send his little private army of racists to kidnap and torture anyone who goes against him. He doesn't even need to do that, the threat is good enough so nobody will dare. Newsom maybe, but he has his own technoologarchs to consider
